  • This paper addresses a synchronization technique based on an adaptive combining of the sub-correlation functions obtained from multiband sine phased binary offset carrier (BOC) signals, allowing a BOC signal receiver to deal with multiband sine phased BOC signals. Specifically, we first obtain the sub-correlation functions composing the BOC autocorrelation function, and then, re-combine the sub-correlation functions generating a correlation function with no side-peak. Finally, by replacing the BOC autocorrelation with the correlation function with no side-peak in the delay lock loop, the proposed scheme performs unambiguous signal tracking. The proposed synchronization scheme is applicable to generic sine phased BOC signals. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme provides a performance improvement over the conventional unambiguous schemes in terms of the tracking error standard deviation.

  • The alternative binary offset carrier (AltBOC) signal shares frequency spectrum with the phase shift keying (PSK) signal, enabling us to manage the satellite communication spectrum more efficiently. However, the side-peaks in the AltBOC autocorrelation pose an ambiguity in the AltBOC signal tracking, and consequently, makes the frequency sharing via the AltBOC difficult. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a cancellation scheme of the AltBOC correlation side-peaks. From the numerical results, it is confirmed that the proposed scheme removes the ambiguity in signal tracking caused by the side-peaks completely, and thus, has a much lower tracking error standard deviation (TESD) (i.e., a much better tracking performance) than the conventional scheme.

  • Binary offset carrier (BOC) signal synchronization is based on the correlation between the received and locally generated BOC signals. Thus, the multiple side-peaks in BOC autocorrelation are one of the main error sources in synchronizing BOC signals. Recently, new correlation functions with no side-peak were proposed for sine and cosine phased BOC signal synchronization, respectively, by the authors [3]. In this paper, we propose a new correlation function with no side-peak for composite BOC (CBOC) signals by using the similar approach to that in the previous work.

  • The binary offset carrier (BOC) modulation has attracted much attention as a new physical layer implementation for satellite communication and global navigation satellite systems. In this paper, we propose a new correlation function for sine-phased BOC signals. Specifically, we separate a sub-carrier pulse into several rectangular pulses, and then, generate a number of partial correlation functions. Finally we combine the partial correlation functions to yield an unambiguous correlation function with no side-peak. From numerical results, it is demonstrated that the proposed correlation function provides a significant tracking performance improvement over the conventional correlation functions.

  • This paper proposes a novel code tracking scheme to track the fine code synchronization for BOC(pn,n) modulated spreading signals. The correlation function of BOC(pn,n) modulated spreading signals has been several peaks. In this paper, we observe that the correlation function in the advanced offset region remains almost unchanged, due to the multipath signals being received later than a line-of-sight signal. Based on this observation, we propose a novel code tracking scheme which is called the advanced region correlation (ARC) method for BOC(n,n) modulated spreading signals. And, we compare with the code tracking accuracy between the conventional and proposed methods in the static multipath and land mobile satellite system channels through the Monte-Carlo simulation. Then, base on the proposed scheme, we propose the generalized-ARC (ARC) scheme for BOC(pn, n) modulated spreading signals.

  • In this paper, we design a local signal to improve a tracking performance of time-multiplexed binary offset carrier (TMBOC) signal, which was adopted in modernized global positioning systems (GPS). Specifically, considering that TMBOC signal includes BOC(6,1) components, we first obtain local signal by evenly dividing sub-carrier of TMBOC(6,1,4/33) by the period of a BOC(6,1) pulse. Finally, we remove side-peaks of TMBOC(6,1,4.33) autocorrelation via combination of partial correlations given from designed local signal and solve the ambiguity problem. From numerical results, when performing signal tracking using the designed local signal, we demonstrate that the improved tracking error standard deviation (TESD) performance is offered as compared its autocorrelation and the conventional correlation functions.

  • Binary offset carrier (BOC) signal synchronization is one of the most important steps to recover the transmitted information in global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) including Galileo and global positioning system (GPS). Generally, BOC signal synchronization is based on the correlation between the received and locally generated BOC signals. Thus, the multiple side-peaks in BOC autocorrelation are one of the main error sources in synchronizing BOC signals. Recently, a novel correlation function with reduced side-peaks was proposed for BOC signal synchronization by Julien [8]; however, Julien's correlation function not only still has the side-peaks, but also is only applicable to sine phased BOC(n, n), where n is the ratio of the pseudo random noise (PRN) code rate to 1.023 MHz. In this paper, we propose a new correlation function for BOC signal synchronization, which does not have any side-peaks and is applicable to general types of BOC signals, sine/cosine phased BOC(kn, n), where k is the ratio of a PRN chip duration to the period of a square wave sub-carrier used in BOC modulation. In addition, an efficient correlator structure is presented for generating the proposed correlation function.

  • In this paper, we propose a three-stage unambiguous tracking scheme for CBOC signals. We evenly divide composite binary offset carrier (CBOC) signal, which was adopted in the Galileo system developed by the European Union (EU), by width of BOC(6,1) signal pulse, and then, generate 12 partial correlations. Then, we generate an unambiguous correlation function by recombining the partial correlations with two kinds of operation. The proposed correlation function is narrower and higher than the conventional correlation functions. From simulation result, it is shown that the proposed correlation function offers a better signal tracking performance over the conventional correlation functions.

  • The satellite communication is an important method for maritime communications. Binary offset carrier (BOC) signal is a promising candidate of next generation global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). Synchronization of BOC signal is one of the most important processes to demodulate BOC signal in GNSS. However, in maritime environment, the synchronization of BOC signal is suffered from the problem of side-peak of BOC autocorrelation function and multipath fading caused by the sea surface reflection. In this paper, we proposed a novel synchronization scheme which can eliminate side-peak perfectly and is robust in multipath channel. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has better performance than conventional schemes in multipath channel.

  • The autocorrelation of an alternative binary offset carrier (AltBOC) signal provides an improved positioning accuracy because of its narrow main-peak. However, The AltBOC signal has a disadvantage that the autocorrelation of the AltBOC signal has multiple side-peaks which incur a severe positioning error. In this paper, we propose a generating method of an unambiguous correlation function for AltBOC signal tracking. Specifically, we first obtain symmetric partial correlation functions, and subsequently, we obtain an unambiguous correlation function by combining them. In numerical results, it is confirmed that the proposed correlation function provides better tracking error standard devation (TESD) performances comparing with the conventional correlation functions.
