A laboratory investigation into crude oil contaminated sand-concrete interface behavior is performed. The interface tests were carried out through a direct shear apparatus. Pure sand and sand-bentonite mixture with different crude oil contents and three concrete surfaces of different textures (smooth, semi-rough, and rough) were examined. The experimental results showed that the concrete surface texture is an effective factor in soil-concrete interface shear strength. The interface shear strength of the rough concrete surface was found higher than smooth and semi-rough concrete surfaces. In addition to the texture, the normal stress and the crude oil content also play important roles in interface shear strength. Moreover, the friction angle decreases with increasing crude oil content due to increase of oil concentration in soil and it increases with increasing interface roughness.
Under high-level radioactive waste repository conditions, bentonite as an engineered barrier material undergoes thermal, hydrological, mechanical, and chemical processes. We report the applications of X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) imaging technique on the characterization and analysis of bentonite over the past decade to provide a reference of the utilization of this technique and the recent research trends. This overview of the X-ray CT technique applications includes the characterization of the bentonite either in pellets or powder form. X-ray imaging has provided a means to extract grain information at the microscale and identify crack networks responsible for the pellets' heterogeneity. Regarding samples of pellets-powder mixtures under hydration, X-ray CT allowed the identification and monitoring of heterogeneous zones throughout the test. Some results showed how zones with pellets only swell faster compared to others composed of pellets and powder. Moreover, the behavior of fissures between grains and bentonite matrix was observed to change under drying and hydrating conditions, tending to close during the former and open during the latter. The development of specializing software has allowed obtaining strain fields from a sequence of images. In more recent works, X-ray CT technique has served to estimate the dry density, water content, and particle displacement at different testing times. Also, when temperature was added to the hydration process of a sample, CT technology offered a way to observe localized and global density changes over time.
A geothermal heat pump system is a preferable alternative energy system in Korea because it uses the heat energy of the earth, which is environmentally friendly and inexhaustible. In order to characterize the thermal conductivity and viscosity of grout materials used for backfilling ground heat exchangers, nine bentonite grouts, one marine clay from Boryung, and cement grouts adapted in the United State have been considered in this study. The bentonite grouts indicate that the thermal conductivity and viscosity increase with the content of bentonite or filler (silica sand). In addition, material segregation can be observed when the viscosity of grout is relatively low. The marine clay turns out to be unsuitable for backfilling the ground heat exchanger due to its insufficient swelling potential. The saturated cement grouts appear to possess much higher thermal conductivity than the saturated bentonite grouts, and the reduction of thermal conductivity in the cement grouts after drying specimens is less than that in the case of the bentonite grouts. Maintaining the moisture content of grouts is a crucial factor in enhancing the efficiency of ground heat exchangers.

This study is and experimental study to investigate the possibility of the utilization of paper ash as the cover and liner materials in the waste disposal landfill and other construction materials. A series of tests were performed to evaluate basic properties, compaction, compressive strength, consolidation, permeability, and CBR of paper ash. The sample used in these tests was obtained from four paper mills which are located in near Ch$\hat{o}$ngju. Bentonite and lime were used as addictives to improve permeability properties of paper ash. It was found that the maximum dry unit weight increases with the increase of the bentonite and lime contents. The results of unconfined compression tests show that paper ash meets the criteria of the unconfined compression strength. It is recognized that the permeability coefficient decreases as increasing bentonite content and the percentage of bentonite needed to make the permeability coefficient below $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$ was 30%.
An enhancement in the performance and safety of a high-level waste repository requires a validation of its engineered barrier. An engineering-scale test (named "KENTEX") has been conducted to investigate the thermal-hydro-mechanical behaviors in the engineered barrier of the Korean reference disposal system The validation test started on May 31, 2005 and is still under operation. The experimental data obtained allowed a preliminary and qualitative interpretation of the thermal-hydro-mechanical behaviors in the bentonite blocks. The temperature was higher as it became closer to the heater, while it became lower as it was farther away from the heater. The water content had a higher value in the part close to the hydration surface than that in the heater part. The relative humidity data suggested that a hydration of the bentonite blocks might occur by different drying-wetting processes, depending on their position. The total pressure was continuously increased by the evolution of the saturation front in the bentonite blocks and thereby the swelling pressure. Near the heater region, there was also a significant contribution of the thermal expansion of bentonite and the vapor pressure in the pores of the bentonite blocks.
This study has been conducted to identify physico-chemical and clay mineralogical characteristics of bentonites produced in Korea for the purpose of finding good quality bentonite for agricultural ure. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Bentonites are mainly composed of montmorillonite developed from tuffs in a lava flow. 2. Chemical properties of bentonites are: pH in $H_2O$(1:1), 7:cation exchange capacity, 60-96me/100g; content of $SiO_2$, 54-72%; ratio of $SiO_2$ to $Al_2O_3$, 4.1-10.0;oven dry loss of $H_2O$ is higher than the ingnition loss of $H_2O$. 3. The x-ray diffrection patterns of powder bentonites show peaks at $14-15{\AA}$, $4.4{\AA}$, and $2.5{\AA}$, and that of swellen one show $17{\AA}$ when treated with ethylene glycol. 4. Distribution areas of the good quality bentonites were (1) Dogu-Dong, Donghae-Myeon, Yeonil-Gun, Gyeongsangbug-Do (2) Hamyeon-Ri, Yangnam-Myeon, Weolseong-Gun, Gyeongsanbug-Do. (3) Joam-Ri, Gangdong-Myeon, Weolseong-Gun, Gyeongsangbug-Do. (4) Sanha-Ri, Gangdong-Myeon, Ulju-Gun, Gyeongsangnam-Do. (5) Sinhyeon-Ri, Gangdong-Myeon, Ulju-Gun, Gyeongsangnam-Do. The buffer is a key component of the engineered barrier system in a high-level radioactive waste (HLW) repository. The present study reviewed the requirements and functional criteria of the buffer reported in literature, and also based on the results, proposed an approach to establish a buffer concept which is applicable to an HLW repository in Korea. The hydraulic conductivity, radionuclide-retarding capacity (equilibrium distribution coefficient and diffusion coefficient), swelling pressure, thermal conductivity, mechanical properties, organic carbon content, and illitization rate were considered as major technical parameters for the functional criteria of the buffer. Domestic bentonite (Ca-bentonite) and, as an alternative, MX-80 (Na-bentonite) were proposed for the buffer of an HLW repository in Korea. The technical specifications for those proposed bentonites were set to parameter values that conservatively satisfy Korea's functional criteria for the Ca-bentonite and Swedish criteria for the Na-bentonite. The thickness of the buffer was determined by evaluating the means of shear behavior, radionuclide release, and heat conduction, which resulted in the proper buffer thickness of 0.25 to 0.5 m. However, the final thickness of the buffer should be determined by considering coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical evaluation and economics and engineering aspects as well.
The use of fly ash as a contaminant barrier material was studied. Mixing ratio of fly ash to bentonite to meet the requirements for landfill liners was determined. The hydraulic behavior exhibited by the fly ash-bentonite liner and the effects of CaO were investigated through hydraulic conductivity tests under various conditions and microscopic analyses including XRD, SEM, helium porosimetry, and image analysis. The hydraulic conductivity of compacted fly ash decreased with the addition of bentonite, which was due mainly to the expanding of bentonite and partly to the filling of voids by chemical reaction products among constituents of the artificial liner. Because of insufficient CaO content, and rich in content but low-reactive $SiO_2$ contained in the fly ashes used, pozzolanic reaction and resulting effects in the artificial liner were not significant. The reactions among constituting materials and their resulting effects on hydraulic conductivity were controlled not by the apparent amounts of each constituent, but by reaction activities of the materials in the artificial liner.
The required density relationship according to the press pressure of the floating die method and the homogeneity of the density distribution in the buffer block was evaluated to analyze the manufacturing characteristics of engineering scale bentonite-sand buffer blocks. In addition, the thermal conductivity was measured and compared with that of the pure bentonite buffer block to evaluate the level of thermal conductivity performance improvement of the bentonite-sand buffer material. As a result, it was confirmed that the standard deviation of dry density decreased to 0.011 and showed a homogeneous density distribution under the condition of press pressure greater than 400 kg/cm2. Furthermore, as a result of the thermal conductivity test, the thermal conductivity of the buffer with optimum moisture content conditions was 1.345 and 1.261 W/(m·K) under the press pressure of 400 and 600 kg/cm2, respectively. It increased by 16.1% and 11.0% compared to the pure bentonite buffer material. Based on the results of this study, it is judged that it can be used as fundamental data for manufacturing a homogeneous bentonite-sand buffer block on an engineering scale.
