Polymer concrete is expected to be widely used as a building material because it has a shorter hardening time and excellent compression, tensile, bending, bond strength, frictional resistance and abrasion loss compared to general concrete. The polymer concrete has excellent vibration damping performance and research on the use of various reinforcing materials is being conducted. However, in order to completely replace the general concrete and the general anti-vibration reinforcement, such polymer concrete requires an overall review of vibration reduction performance considering physical properties, dynamic properties, productivity and field applicability. In this study, the physical and dynamic properties of polymer concrete by epoxy mixing ratio were compared with those of general concrete. It was appeared that compression, tensile, bending and bond strengths of polymer concrete by epoxy mixing were significantly higher than those of general concrete. Especially, the tensile strength was more than 4 ~ 6.5 times. Based on the basic physical properties of polymer concrete, the damping ratio, which is a dynamic characteristic according to the epoxy mixing ratio, was derived through analytical models and experiments. As a result, the dynamic stiffness of polymer concrete was 20% higher than that of general concrete and the loss rate was about 3 times higher.

The nonlinear seismic responses of steel buildings with perimeter moment resisting frames (PMRF) and interior gravity frames (IGF) are estimated, modeling the interior connections first as perfectly pinned (PPC), and then as partially restrained (PRC). Two 3D steel building models, twenty strong motions and three levels of the PRC rigidity, which are represented by the Richard Model and the Beam Line Theory, are considered. The RUAUMOKO Computer Program is used for the required time history nonlinear dynamic analysis. The responses can be significantly reduced when interior connections are considered as PRC, confirming what observed in experimental investigations. The reduction significantly varies with the strong motion, story, model, structural deformation, response parameter, and location of the structural element. The reduction is larger for global than for local response parameters; average reductions larger than 30% are observed for shears and displacements while they are about 20% for bending moments. The reduction is much larger for medium- than for low-rise buildings indicating a considerable influence of the structural complexity. It can be concluded that, the effect of the dissipated energy at PRC should not be neglected. Even for connections with relative small stiffness, which are usually idealized as PPC, the reduction can be significant. Thus, PRC can be used at IGF of steel buildings with PMRF to get more economical construction, to reduce the seismic response and to make steel building more seismic load tolerant. Much more research is needed to consider other aspects of the problem to reach more general conclusions.
In this paper, bending capacities of glulams with different configurations of cross-section were evaluated. These configurations included horizontal(BH), vertical(BVN), vertical with vertical plywood (BVV) and vertical combination of lamination with horizontal plywood(BVH). Full-scale bending tests were performed to investigate the effect of different section configurations on bending strength(MOR) and stiffness(MOE) of glulam. Compared with type BH, MOR of glulam with type BVN configuration was improved about 23%, which was considered to be caused by defect dispersion effect, while MOE of glulams with these two types of configurations were similar. Because MOE of plywood is generally smaller than that of solid wood laminar, MOE of type BVH glulam decreased about 15%, but in the case of type BVV glulam, MOR was improved without any reduction of MOE. The reason of this result could be undersood in the view of shear-reinforcement effect, which was verified from analysis of fracture mode. From the results of this study, it was concluded that bending capacity of glulam could be improved by proper section design, such as laminar arrangement and shear reinforcement.
When an initially straight thin cylinder is bent, there is a tendency for the cross section to flatten. This phenomenon was investigated by L.G. Brazier in 1927 and is called "Brazier Effect" or "Brazier Theory". The main characteristic is the reduction of carrying capacity due to the decrease of bending stiffness by shortening of thickness with the increase of external load. And the relationship of curvature-bending moment becomes a soft spring type as shown in Fig.2. In this paper, the Brazier theory on plate type structures is investigated from the following view points : (1) What is the Brazier effect? (2) the reason of the occurrence of the Brazier effect in plate type structures by using beam model and (3) factors which cause the brazier effect.

In this study, we propose a new truss deckplate system, which does not require temporary floor supports during construction, with ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) infilled top bars. The increased stiffness and strength of the proposed system were well retained as compared to those of the existing truss deckplate systems, thereby resulting in the reduction of maximum deflection at the span center. Four-point bending tests were performed on five specimens with a net span of 4.6 m to evaluate the structural performance of proposed system in the construction stage. In addition, the load-deflection curve was plotted for each specimen, and the effects of test parameters were analyzed. Further, a rigorous nonlinear three-dimensional finite element analysis was performed, and its results were compared with the test results. From the results, it was observed that the test specimens of the proposed system exhibited superior performance as compared to those of the existing one and also satisfied the serviceability requirement during construction provided by the Korea Building Code 2016.

Rails are key elements in railway superstructure since these elements receive directly the train load transmitted by the wheels. Simultaneously, rails must provide effective stress transference to the rest of the track elements. This track element often deteriorates as a consequence of the vehicle passing or manufacturing imperfections that cause in rail several defects. Among these rail defects, transverse cracks highlights and are considered a severe pathology because they can suddenly trigger the rail failure. This study is focused on UIC-60 rails with transverse cracks. A 3-D FEM model is developed in ANSYS for the flawless rail in which conditions simulating the crack presence are implemented. To account for the inertia loss of the rail as a consequence of the cracking, a reduction of the bending stiffness of the rail is considered. The numerical models have been calibrated using the first four bending vibration modes in terms of frequencies. These vibration frequencies have been obtained using the Experimental Modal Analysis technique, studying the changes in the modal parameters of the rails induced by the crack and comparing the results obtained by the model with experimental results. Finally, the calibrated and validated models for the single rail have been implemented in a complete railway ballasted track FEM model in order to study the static influence of the cracks on the rail deflection caused by a load passing.

In this paper, a quasi-3D hyperbolic shear deformation theory for the bending responses of a functionally graded (FG) porous micro-beam is based on a modified couple stress theory requiring only one material length scale parameter that can capture the size influence. The model proposed accounts for both shear and normal deformation effects through an illustrative variation of all displacements across the thickness and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the micro-beam. The effective material properties of the functionally graded micro-beam are assumed to vary in the thickness direction and are estimated using the homogenization method of power law distribution, which is modified to approximate the porous material properties with even and uneven distributions of porosity phases. The equilibrium equations are obtained using the virtual work principle and solved using Navier's technique. The validity of the derived formulation is established by comparing it with the ones available in the literature. Numerical examples are presented to investigate the influences of the power law index, material length scale parameter, beam thickness, and shear and normal deformation effects on the mechanical characteristics of the FG micro-beam. The results demonstrate that the inclusion of the size effects increases the microbeams stiffness, which consequently leads to a reduction in deflections. In contrast, the shear and normal deformation effects are just the opposite.

Numerical analyses are performed to show the effect of stiffening facade riggers on the behavior of the structure and to investigate the optimum locations of facade riggers. Optimum locations of the facade riggers to minimize the drift at the top of the structure are obtained by maximizing the drift reduction caused by the facade riggers and are significantly influenced by the bending and shear stiffnesses of the braced frame and facade riggers. Three standard load cases of uniformal and triangularly distributed lateral loads as well as a lateral point load at the top of the structure are considered in this paper Optimum locations of facade riggers are plotted as functions of nondimensional relative stiffness parameters ${\omega}$ and ${\beta}$ for structures with one to four riggers. Although the analysis presented herein is based on certain simplifying assumptions, it is believed that the results do provide sufficiently accurate information for determining the optimum locations of facade riggers in highrise structures.

The weight reduction design process of tension links could be studied based on the variation of tension, bending and torsional stiffness after substituting STKM11A steels with aluminum alloys (A356) with tensile strength of 245 MPa. The existed I-beam type link component may have a weak point for loads applied from a special direction. Therefore, it was investigated to the optimal shape of the link component that could withstand loads from all directions and at the same time reduce weight. Various types of link shapes were designed and analyzed, and the optimized shape was found. The optimized design can reduce over 40% of the original steel link weight, and it could be suggested for light-weight design guides and safe design conditions for the development of tension links.

For the deckhouse or superstructure, attention is directed to the reduction of vibration from a human susceptibility point of view. The two basic requirements for obtaining a low vibration level in the accommodation are to ensure that excitation forces from propeller and/or main engine are small and to avoid resonance excitation of the hull and superstructure. In recent years increased attention has been directed towards the problems of vibration and noise in deckhouse, which have caused major problems with regard to the environmental quality in the living quarters for crews. Accordingly, in this paper, the characteristic of the vibration of deckhouse of fishing boat, of which the length/height ratio is also relatively high, are studied systematically with regard to the shape and modelling of deckhouse based on finite element method of 1-dimensional, 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional model. This study is divided into 4-part. 1st part is the global deckhouse vibration, 2nd part is the local deckhouse vibration, 3rd part consists of the estimation for stiffness of foundational support and 4th part is the application to TUNA LONG LINER of 416 ton class. For the global vibration analysis, the severity of the vibration depends on the longitudinal shear and bending stiffness of the deckhouse, on the vertical deckhouse support(fore, aft and sides). However, even if the design is technically sound, vibration problems may arise due to vertical or longitudinal hull girder or afterbody resonances. Author applied the method of this study to the analysis of, deep-sea fishing vessel of G.T. 416 ton class with relatively low height and long deckhouse, and investigated the vibrational characteristic of the fishing vessel with earlier structural feature. According to this investigation, the vibration, response of above vessel was confirmed of which main hull and deckhouse behave as one body. It is at the bottom of vibrational trouble which a accommodation part of the fishing vessel is raised, that is the local vibration for side wall, fore-aft wall and deck plate of deckhouse rather than thief fect of fore-aft vibration of deckhouse for above fishing vessel. and the resonance of main hull, deckhouse and driving system such as the main engine, propeller in exciting source is mainly brought up as the trouble.
