  • The objective of the present paper is to investigate the bending behavior with stretching effect of carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (CNTRC) beams. The beams resting on the Pasternak elastic foundation, including a shear layer and Winkler spring, are considered. The single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are aligned and distributed in polymeric matrix with different patterns of reinforcement. The material properties of the CNTRC beams are estimated by using the rule of mixture. The significant feature of this model is that, in addition to including the shear deformation effect and stretching effect it deals with only 4 unknowns without including a shear correction factor. The single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are aligned and distributed in polymeric matrix with different patterns of reinforcement. The material properties of the CNTRC beams are assessed by employing the rule of mixture. The equilibrium equations have been obtained using the principle of virtual displacements. The mathematical models provided in this paper are numerically validated by comparison with some available results. New results of bending analyses of CNTRC beams based on the present theory with stretching effect is presented and discussed in details. the effects of different parameters of the beam on the bending responses of CNTRC beam are discussed.

  • In this paper, the bending performance of a MSFRHPC (containing steel fiber, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber, and CW)-reinforced beam was studied for the first time. Introducing a multiscale fiber system increased the first crack load (up to 150%), yield load (up to 50%), and peak load (up to 15%) of reinforced beams. The multiscale fiber system delays cracking of the reinforced beam, reduces crack width of the reinforced beam in normal use, and improves the durability of the beam. Considering yield load and peak load, the reinforcing effect of multiscale fiber on the high-reinforcement ratio beam (1.00%) is better than that on the low-reinforcement ratio beam (0.57%). Introducing fibers slowed the development of cracks in the reinforced beam under bending. With the added hybrid fiber, the deformation concentration of reinforced beams after yield was more significant with concentration in 1 or 2 cracks. A model for predicting the flexural capacity of MSFRHPC-reinforced beams was proposed, considering the action of multiscale hybrid fibers. This research is helpful for structure application of MSFRHPC-containing CW.

  • In this experiment, we distribute the bending angle to 60$^{\circ}$, 90$^{\circ}$, 120$^{\circ}$, and we separate it in to two groups. One is straightening right after bending and the other is straightening after one week. The bars we will use are HD13 and HD16. The number of tests will be 60 times. In the case of HD16, the increase of bending angle decreased yield strength and maximum strength. And compared with thinner bars, HD16 showed bigger differences in yield strength and maximum strength when the 'being bent' duration got longer. So it shows that when we bend and after straighten a bar, stress change takes place on the surface of the bar. At the beginning it shows it's ductility after that it deforms while transforming it's character to destroying. And also, if we straighten a bar after bending, it doesn't get straighten like the original form. So it makes torsion and this torsion makes moments in different areas.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the contribution of concrete and shear reinforcement, in shear carrying capacity, on concrete beams, reinforced with steel and/or FRP rods. The experimental tests for 12 concrete beams, reinforced with steel and/or FRP rods, are carried out. Experimental parameters includes the mechanical properties of reinforcements in shear and bending, and the ratio of shear reinforcement. This study compares the experimental results of shear carrying capacity in concrete beams, reinforced with steel and/or FRP rods, with the proposed equations. According to the experimental results, the effect of the concrete in concrete beams reinforced with FRP rods is decreased with decreasing Young's modulus of longitudinal tensile reinforcement. This results from the large deflection of concrete beams reinforced with decreasing Young's modulus of longitudinal tensile reinforcement. Also, the contribution of shear reinforcement is smaller than the calculated value, using the truss analogy. This results from the fact that the stress redistribution is not exhibited after the break of shear reinforcement.

  • A piping system stress analysis need to be re-performed for structural integrity assessment after reinforcement of a pipe with significant wall thinning. For efficient stress analysis, a one-dimensional beam element for the wall-thinned pipe with reinforcement needs to be developed. To develop the beam element, this work presents analytical equations for elastic stiffness of the wall-thinned pipe with reinforcement are analytically derived for axial tension, bending and torsion. Comparison with finite element (FE) analysis results using detailed three-dimensional solid models for wall-thinned pipe with reinforcement shows good agreement. Implementation of the proposed solutions into commercial FE programs is explained.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the bending behavior of Kagome truss composite beams reinforced by fiber-reinforced composites (FRC). Two types of FRCs, i.e., high ductile FRC with a high tensile ductility and high strength FRC with high compressive strength were used; and three Kagome truss composite beams reinforced by FRCs were manufactured. In order to investigate the bending behavior of beams, bending tests were carried out. Test results showed that types of FRCs and reinforcement methods significantly influenced the bending behavior of Kagome truss composite beams.

  • This paper summarizes the development and evaluation of the reinforcement details of CFRP plates to improve the bending performance of wooden beams. In this study, the reinforcing technology using high-strength bolts for the end of beam were developed as reinforcement details for reinforcing wooden beams with CFRP plates by EBM method. In order to evaluate the bending performance, a bending test was conducted for the specimens with details of reinforcement such as the EBM method and the NSM method. From the experimental results, the EBM specimens without end restraints had both the CFRP plate attachment failure and the splitting failure of the wood. In the load-displacement curve, the non-reinforced specimens exhibited linear elastic behavior and then brittle fracture after the maximum load. The maximum load of the specimens reinforced by the EBM method increased by 31.5~63.0% compared to the non-reinforced specimens, and the maximum load according to the end restraints of the high-strength bolts increased by 24.0%. Based on the reinforcement amount of the same CFRP plate, EBM reinforcement was 2.67 times larger in maximum load increase rate than NSM reinforcement.

  • In this study, reinforced concrete slabs with steps were experimentally studied to analyze their structural performance and to suggest reinforcing details in the step. Because the stepped slabs may behave very poorly in terms of bending strength, stiffness, deflection, cracking, etc., the study is aimed to suggest proper reinforcing details such that the same bending strength is obtained as that without steps. The bending strengths of 12 test specimens with a variety of different reinforcing detail types or other parameters were compared with each other. The specimen without any additional reinforcement in the step had a very low bending strength and significant damage, and the specimens with diagonal reinforcements in the step showed substantial early cracks, experienced hinging of the step, and had a substantial loss of the bending strength. In contrast, the specimens with a combination of U-bars, reversed U-bars, L-bars, and reversed L-bars performed very well and almost reached to 100% of the slab bending strength. The U-bars and reversed U-bars were effective in controling the diagonal cracks, while the L-bars and reversed L-bars were effective in preventing from yielding of slab reinforcement near the step.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the bending strength of the Larix glulam beams which were reinforced with CFRP (Carbon fiber reinforced plastic) of which the reinforcement ratios were 0.7% and 2.1% by volume. In the bending test, the rupture shape of the reinforced glulam shows that the reinforced glulam broke firstly in the lowest bottom layer on which tension was loaded, but did not in the upper part reinforced with the CFRP layer. The upper part of the reinforced layer kept strength and did not break when the reinforced glulam broke firstly at the bottom part of the reinforced layer, but broke secondly as loading was increased. In the glulam beams reinforced with CFRP of which the reinforcement ratio was 0.7% by volume, the bending strength of the reinforced beams was increased by 28% at the first break. When beams broke up to the upper part of the reinforced layer, the bending strength of the reinforced beams was increased by 55%, compared to those of control glulam beams. When the glulam beams were reinforced with CFRP of which the reinforcement ratio was 2.1% by volume, the bending strength of the reinforced beams was increased by 77%, compared to those of control glulam beams. The ratio of the height of calculated neutral axis using failure mode recommended by Romani and the height of actual neutral axis using strain gauge was 1.03 and agreed well.

  • For the practical application of U-flanged Truss Hybrid beams, the flexural capacity of hybrid beams with end reinforcement details using vertical steel plates was verified. The bending test of U-flanged Truss Hybrid beams was performed using the same top chord under the compressive force, but with the thickness of the bottom plate and the amount of tensile reinforcement. The initial stiffness and maximum load of the specimen with tensile reinforcement have a higher value than that of the specimen without tension reinforcement, but the more tensile reinforcement, the greater the load decrease after the maximum load. In the case of the specimen with tensile reinforcement, because the test result value is 76% to 88% when compared with the flexural strength according to Korea Design Code, the safety of the U-flanged Truss Hybrid beam with the same details of the specimens can't ensure. Therefore, the development of new details is required to ensure that the bottom steel plate and the tensile reinforcement can undergo sufficient tensile deformation.
