  • We have demonstrated a low speed weigh-in motion system using FBG sensors and performed field test at a trial road. Technique, called identical chirped grating interrogation, have used for a demodulation relying on the mismatching of two identical broadband chirped gratings. We compensated the fluctuation of LED power and the temperature of sensor and used a lock-in amplifier to reduce effect of noise. We could design a bending plate that the measurement results are independent of position of weight. The FBG sensors weigh-in motion system showed linearity and reproducibility.

  • Recently, it has been reported that the whipping response, which is the elastic phenomenon of the ship, may be one of the causes of the ship accident. Unfortunately, the commonly used methodology for evaluating the whipping effect effectively has not been developed yet. In this study, we developed a procedure to estimate the whipping effect of hull in actual design stage. Fluid-structure interaction analysis was performed for a dominant short term sea state to obtain the time series data of vertical wave bending moment including the whipping response by slamming. In order to estimate the whipping effect by using the time series, some signal processing and statistical techniques such as low pass filtering, Weibull fitting and so on, were applied. the hydro-elasticity analysis was performed on container ships of various sizes to evaluate the whipping effect. The parameters that can affect the response of the hull vibration was selected and the effect of these parameters on whipping was analyzed.

  • This work concentrated on the effect of different laser beams on the microstructure and dielectric properties of $BaTiO_3$ nanoparticles at different calcinations times during the gelling preparation step. The nanoparticles were prepared by the sol-gel method. A green (1000 mW, 532 nm) and red laser beam (500 mW, 808 nm), were applied vertically at the center of stirring raw materials. The samples were sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2, 4, and 6 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that samples prepared under the green laser have the highest purity. The FT-IR spectra showed that the stretching and bending vibrations of TiO bond without any other bonds, which are compatible to the X-ray diffraction (XRD) results. Samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Scan electron microscopy (SEM), and UV-Visible spectrophotometer. Characterization showed the samples prepared under the green laser to have the highest particle size (~ 50 nm) and transparency for all sintering durations. Laser beam effects on electrical characterization were studied. BT nanoparticles prepared under the green laser show the higher dielectric constant, which was found to increase with sintering temperature.

  • This paper is concerned with the simulation-based process design method involved non-steady state problem of tension levelling considering the elasto-plastic hardening behavior of a metallic strip by a commercial code ABAQUS/Standard. The tension levelling process is peformed to elongate the strip plastically in combination of tensile and bending strain by a controlled manner so that all longitudinal fibers in the strip have an approximately equal amount of length and undesirable strip shapes are corrected to the flat share. Objectives of this paper are the development of a general method for the design of a tension leveller by a finite element method and parameter studies for the deisgn variables such as the applied tension, the roll intermash includes the determination of the steady state using the simple unit of the tension levelling line and the effect of the finite element mesh size on the amount and distribution of the strain calculated. The analysis provides the information about the intermesh effect on the amount and final shapes of the strip and distribution of the strain in order to determine the amount elongation for correction of the irregular share.

  • Thin (25-103$\AA$) SiO$_2$ films are grown using the rapid thermal oxidation processing at temperatures of 105$0^{\circ}C$-115$0^{\circ}C$ for 5-30 sec, in order to investigate the characteristics of ultra thin oxide. For measuring the thickness of oxide TEM, ellipsometry, and C-V method which is taken in the condition of small surface band bending are used and compared. When neglecting the small deviation affected by both interface state and moisture charge effect, those three methods described above give similar results. In order to examine the effect of rapid thermal annealing, part of samples are annealed in N$_2$ ambient. MOS capacitors are fabricated and the characteristics of I-V and C-V are measured. Measurements show that the activation energy of initial thickness of oxide grown during the ramp-up time is of 1.125eV and the activation energy of the oxidation rate is of 0.98eV. As oxidation temperature is increased, dielectric breakdown field E$_{BD}$ is decreased due to the increase of fixed charge density N$_f$ However, E$_{BD}$ is shown to be decreased as increasing the thickness of oxide. The increase of N$_f$ in the early stage of thermal annealing results in the decrease of E$_{BD}$.

  • This paper presents analysis of dynamic characteristics of a high-speed milling spindle with a drawbar and a built-in motor. The spindle system with a built-in motor can be used to simplify the structure of machine tools, to improve the machining flexibility of machine tools, and to perform the high speed machining. In this system the shaft is usually assumed as a rigid rotor. In this paper, the modal characteristics of drawbar in high-speed milling spindle system due to supporting stiffness between drawbar and shaft and considering the mass and stiffness effects of the built-in motor's rotor are analyzed by numerical method. The result shows enough stiff supports must be provided between shaft and drawbar to prevent occurring drawbar vibration lower than the natural frequency of 1st bending mode of spindle. And considering the mass and stiffness of built-in motor's rotor is important thing to derive more accurate results.

  • Hemming is used to connect two sheet metal components by folding the edge of an outer panel around an inner panel to create a smooth edge. The minimization of hemming defects is critical to the final quality of automobile products because hemming is one of the last operations during fabrication. Designing the hemmed part is not easy and is influenced by the geometry of the bent part. Therefore, the main problem for automotive parts is dimensional accuracy since formed products often deviate geometrically due to large springback. Few numerical approaches using 3-dimensional finite element model have been applied to hemming due to the small element size which is needed to properly capture the bending behavior of the sheet around small die corner and the comparatively big size of automotive opening parts, such as doors, hoods and deck lids. The current study concentrates on the 3-dimensional numerical simulation of hemming for an automotive door. The relationship between the design parameters of the hemming operation and the height difference defect is shown. Quality improvement of the automotive door can be increased through the study of model parameters.

  • The metal front case of a mobile phone is manufactured by press forming and welding of thin metal sheets. Twisting of the frame after the forming process is one of main obstacle for the assembly with reinforcement by welding. This study introduces a method preventing twisting of the metal front case frame in press forming. The spring-back after forming produces twisting of the frame, which leads to a low structural stiffness. To reduce twisting, connectors are required to reinforce the structural stiffness of the frame. In this study, the twisting profile is evaluated using a finite element(FE) analysis for various connector shapes. The actual connector shape is determined by minimization of the frame twisting within the tolerance of the FE-analysis. To verify the validity of the proposed blank shape, a forming experiment is performed and the twisting profile is measured using a 3D laser scanning method. The dimensional accuracy is found to be within the tolerance and in good agreement with the FE-analysis.

  • We are developing a biomimetic robot based on the Sea Lamprey. The robot consists of a cylindrical electronics bay propelled by an undulatory body axis. Shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators generate propagating flexion waves in five undulatory segments of a polyurethane strip. The behavior of the robot is controlled by an electronic nervous system (ENS) composed of networks of discrete-time map-based neurons and synapses that execute on a digital signal processing chip. Motor neuron action potentials gate power transistors that apply current to the SMA actuators. The ENS consists of a set of segmental central pattern generators (CPGs), modulated by layered command and coordinating neuron networks, that integrate input from exteroceptive sensors including a compass, accelerometers, inclinometers and a short baseline sonar array (SBA). The CPGs instantiate the 3-element hemi-segmental network model established from physiological studies. Anterior and posterior propagating pathways between CPGs mediate intersegmental coordination to generate flexion waves for forward and backward swimming. The command network mediates layered exteroceptive reflexes for homing, primary orientation, and impediment compensation. The SBA allows homing on a sonar beacon by indicating deviations in azimuth and inclination. Inclinometers actuate a bending segment between the hull and undulator to allow climb and dive. Accelerometers can distinguish collisions from impediment to allow compensatory reflexes. Modulatory commands mediate speed control and turning. A SBA communications interface is being developed to allow supervised reactive autonomy.

  • In-situ processing route was adopted to disperse carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into $Al_2O_3$ powders homogeneously. The $Al_2O_3$ composite powders with homogeneous dispersion of CNTs could be synthesized by a catalytic route for in-situ formation of CNTs on nano-sized Fe dispersed $Al_2O_3$ powders. CNTs/Fe/$Al_2O_3$ nanopowders were densified by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The hardness and bending strength as well as electrical conductivity increased with increasing sintering temperature. However, the electrical conductivity of the composites sintered at above $1500^{\circ}C$ showed decreased value with increasing sintering temperature due to the oxidation of CNTs.
