  • The leak-before-break behavior and the crack opening displacement were investigated of statically indeterminate piping system and statically determinate piping system after a crack penetration. The reduction in the ultimate strength caused by a crack was relatively small in the statically indeterminate piping system. The leak-before-break in the statically indeterminate piping system had a larger safety margin than that in the statically determinate piping system. The crack opening displacement after crack penetration in a pipe with a nonpenetrating crack was evaluated by using a plastic rotation angle.

  • Surface fatigue crack propagation tests by plane bending fatigue were conducted on the welding specimens of an aluminium alloy, A5083-0, having an edge through thickness notch to study the fatigue crack growth characteristics. Moreover, the experiments were performed in order to clarify the fatigue crack initiation and growth. The properties of fatigue crack growth were quantitatively inspected in welded metal, heat-affected zone and base metal of the welding specimens. The main results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. It is found that the hardness distributions of A5083-0 aluminium alloy weldments are quite different with those of steel material weldments, so that the hardness distribution becomes lower in the following order: base metal, heat-affected zone and weld metal. 2. It is observed that the grain size of this specimen weldment appears to be almost equal to the base metal, when TIC welding method is adopted. 3. In a surface fatigue crack initiation and growth, the fatigue crack does not begin by opening-closing mechanism until hardening is saturated at the crack tip. 4. The fatigue crack growth characteristics of A5083-0 alluminium alloy weldments can be concluded.$${\frac{da}{dn}}=C({\Delta}K)^n=3.8{\times}10^{-9}{({\frac}{1}{2}{\Delta}S_t{\sqrt{{\pi}a}})}^{2.4}$$

  • In this study, we prepared ITO thin film on the polycarbonate(PC) substrate by using Facing Targets sputtering (FTS) system. After the external bending force was applied to as-deposited ITO thin films with fixed face-plate distance (L), we investigated how properties of those change. As a result, the crack density of films was increasing as bending frequency increased. In accordance with crack distribution, we observed that the resistivity value of ITO thin film increased.

  • We studied the influences of open cracks in free vibrating beam with rectangular section using a numerical model. The crack was assumed to be single and always open during the free vibration and equivalent bending stiffness of a cracked beam was calculated based on the strain energy balance. By Galerkin's method, the frequencies of cantilever beam could he obtained with respect to various crack depths and locations. Also, the experiments on the cracked beams were carried out to find natural frequencies. The cracks were initiated at five locations and the crack depths were increased by five steps at each location. The experimental results were compared with the numerical results and the comparison results were discussed.

  • A branched crack in a semi-infinite plate under tension and bending moment is considered. Intensity factors of the stress and moment for the branched crack are evaluated. The stress intensity factors are obtained by using the finite element method and the J-based mutual integral. The moment intensity factors are calculated by extrapolating the values of the moment near the crack tip. Approximate expressions are also obtained as functions of the branched crack length and branching angle.

  • Fracture behaviors of pipes with local wall thinning are very important for the integrity of nuclear power plant. However, effects of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of piping system were not well studied. Acoustic emission(AE) has been widely used in various fields because of its extreme sensitivity, dynamic detection ability and location of growing defects. In this study, we investigated failure modes of locally wall thinned pipes and AE signals by bending test. From test results, we could be divided four types of failure modes of ovalization, crack initiation after ovalization, local buckling and crack initiation after local buckling. And fracture behaviors such as elastic region, yielding region, plastic deformation region and crack progress region could be evaluated by AE counts, accumulative counts and time-frequency analysis during bending test. The result of the frequency range is expected to be basic data that can inspect plants in real-time.

  • This study aims to examine an effect of stacking sequence and curvature on the penetration characteristic of a composite laminated shell. For the purpose, we manufactured specimens with different stacking sequences and curvatures, and conducted a penetration test using an air-gun. To examine an influence according to stacking sequence, as flat plate and curvature specimen had more plies, their critical penetration energy was higher, Critical penetration energies of specimen A and C with less interfaces somewhat higher than those of B and D with more interfaces. The reason that with less interfaces, critical penetration energy was higher is pre-impact bending stiffness of composite laminated shell with less interfaces was lower than that of laminated shell with more interfaces, but bending stiffness after impact was higher. And it is because interface, the weakest part of the composite laminated shell, was influenced by transverse impact. As curvature increases, critical penetration energy increases linearly. It is because as curvature increases, resistance to in-plane deformation as well as bending deformation increases, which need higher critical penetration energy. Patterns of cracks caused by penetration of composite laminated shells include interlaminar crack, intralaminar crack, and laminar fracture. A 0$^{\circ}$ply laminar had a matrix crack, a 90$^{\circ}$ply laminar had intralaminar crack and laminar fracture, and interface between 0$^{\circ}$and 90$^{\circ}$laminar had a interlaminar crack. We examined crack length and delamination area through a penetration test. For the specimen A and C with 2 interface, the longest circumferential direction crack length and largest delamination area were observed on the first interface from the impact point. For the specimen B and D with 4 interface, the longest crack length and largest delamination area were observed on the third interface from the impact point.

  • In this study, we analyzed the crack-healing characteristics of specimens; different crack lengths and coating methods of $Si_3N_4$ ceramic structures with long cracks were analyzed. Cracks with lengths of about $100-500\;{\mu}m$ were obtained using a Vickers indenter for a load of 24.5-98 N. In the case of a crack obtained by applying a load of 24.5 N, the crack-healed specimen with $SiO_2$ nanocolloid coating exhibited the highest bending strength, which was higher than that of a smooth specimen by 140%, but the bending strength of a crack-healed specimen that had a $SiO_2$ nanocolloid coating and originally had multiple cracks was lower than that of a smooth specimen. However, when compared to the cracked specimens, the bending strength of most specimens with multiple cracks increased slightly. On the basis of these results, the crack-healing characteristics of $Si_3N_4$ ceramic structures with multiple indentations were studied for different coating methods. The most effective coating method for long-crack specimens was hydrostatic pressure coating.

  • The capability of a multi-directional fixed smeared crack constitutive model to simulate the flexural/punching failure modes of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) laminar structures is discussed. The constitutive model is implemented in a computer program based on the finite element method, where the FRC laminar structures were simulated according to the Reissner-Mindlin shell theory. The shell is discretized into layers for the simulation of the membrane, bending and out-of-plane shear nonlinear behavior. A stress-strain softening diagram is proposed to reproduce, after crack initiation, the evolution of the normal crack component. The in-plane shear crack component is obtained using the concept of shear retention factor, defined by a crack-strain dependent law. To capture the punching failure mode, a softening diagram is proposed to simulate the decrease of the out-of-plane shear stress components with the increase of the corresponding shear strain components, after crack initiation. With this relatively simple approach, accurate predictions of the behavior of FRC structures failing in bending and in shear can be obtained. To assess the predictive performance of the model, a punching experimental test of a module of a façade panel fabricated with steel fiber reinforced self-compacting concrete is numerically simulated. The influence of some parameters defining the softening diagrams is discussed.
