Building a stable knowledge base is an important issue in the application of knowledge engineering. In this paper, we present an algorithm for detecting and locating discrepancies in the line of the reasoning process especially when discrepancies occur on belief values. This includes backtracking the rule firing from a goal node of the rule network. Retracting a belief function allows the current belief state to move back to another belief state without the rule firing. It also gives an estimate, called contribution measure, of how much the rule has an impact on the current belief state. Examining the measure leads the expert to locate the possible cause of problem in the rule. For non-monotonic reasoning, the belief retraction method moves the belief state back to the previous state. A tracing algorithm is presented to identify and locate the cause of problem. This also gives repair suggestions for rule refinement.

In this paper, we present an algorithm for adjusting degree of belief for consistency on the evidence dependency network where various sets of evidence support different sets of hypotheses. It is common for experts to assign higher degree of belief to a hypothesis when there is more evidence over the hypothesis. Human expert without knowledge of uncertainty handling may not be able to cope with how evidence is combined to produce the anticipated belief value. Belief in a hypothesis changes as a series of evidence is known to be true. In non-monotonic reasoning environments, the belief retraction method is needed to clearly deal with uncertain situations. We create evidence dependency network from rules and apply the evidence retraction algorithm to refine belief values on the hypothesis set. We also introduce negative belief values to reflect the reverse effect of evidence combination.

In this paper, we propose a probabilistic tabu search strategy for function optimization. It is composed of two procedures, one is Basic search procedure that plays a role in local search, and the other is Restarting procedure that enables to diversify search region. In basic search procedure, we use Belief space and Near region to create neighbors. Belief space is made of high-rank neighbors to effectively restrict searching space, so it can improve searching time and local or global searching capability. When a solution is converged in a local area, Restarting procedure works to search other regions. In this time, we use Probabilistic Tabu Strategy(PTS) to adjust parameters such as a reducing rate, initial searching region etc., which makes enhance the performance of searching ability in various problems. In order to show the usefulness of the proposed method, the PTS is applied to the minimization problems such as De Jong functions, Ackley function, and Griewank functions etc., the results are compared with those of GA or EP.
In this article, we conducted a literature review about cognitive aging and social-psychological factors that influence cognitive function in old age. As getting older, cognitive function was mostly seen as declining, even though the effect of aging is differential across domains of cognitive ability. The negative view about cognitive aging might be reflecting social-psychological factors such as age stereotypes. Age stereotypes vary among different cultures, but appear to be negative in general. Negative age stereotypes are related to lower level of memory performances. Older adults who were experimentally presented with positive age stereotypes exhibited better memory performances than those with negative age stereotypes. Self-referent belief, appraisals of one's own cognitive abilities, could also affect actual performance in cognitive tasks. Older adults showed lower self-referent belief than younger adults, and it might explain memory decline in old age. Theoretical explanation and implication about the relationship between social-psychological factors and cognitive abilities were discussed.
Belief is generally understood as a mental phenomenon which is aimed to attain objective information of the world. Thus, the content of belief is not something that can be manipulated or created by men. The primary function of belief in a word is to represent the world correctly. Now, William James in his "The Will to Believe" challenges this view. According to James, one can come to believe something by choosing to believe it. And he argues for his position by criticizing W. K. Clifford who wrote an essay entitled "The Ethics of Belief". In this paper, I examine both arguments given by them and show whose position is more convincing.
The purpose of this study is to investigate productive activities effect on psychological well-being in the elderly. As people grow older, the level of physical function and psychological well-being is decreased. But We verified maintaining productive activities could make buffering effect on psychological well-being. And We investigate what kind of productive activities could effect on psychological well-being by gender. As a result, there were differences in self efficacy belief, life satisfaction and depression by age, education, absence of spouse, subjective economic status and physical function. Group activity and domestic labor had on affirmative effect on self efficacy belief in male and female elder. Learning activity had on positive effect on life satisfaction in female. Depression was negative influenced by voluntary activity and domestic labor in female and pay work, group activity and domestic labor in male.

The goal of this study was to analyze landslide susceptibility using two different models and compare the results. For this purpose, a landslide inventory map was produced from a field survey, and the inventory was divided into two groups for training and validation, respectively. Sixteen landslide conditioning factors were considered. The relationships between landslide occurrence and landslide conditioning factors were analyzed using the FR (Frequency Ratio) and EBF (Evidential Belief Function) models. The LSI (Landslide Susceptibility Index) maps that were produced were validated using the ROC (Relative Operating Characteristics) curve and the SCAI (Seed Cell Area Index). The AUC (Area under the ROC Curve) values of the FR and EBF LSI maps were 80.6% and 79.5%, with prediction accuracies of 72.7% and 71.8%, respectively. Additionally, in the low and very low susceptibility zones, the FR LSI map had higher SCAI values compared to the EBF LSI map, as high as 0.47%p. These results indicate that both models were reasonably accurate, however that the FR LSI map had a slightly higher accuracy for landslide susceptibility mapping in the study area.

The belief propagation method that has been studied recently yields good performance in disparity extraction. The method in which a target function is modeled as an energy function based on Markov random field(MRF), solves the stereo matching problem by finding the disparity to minimize the energy function. MRF models provide robust and unified framework for vision problem such as stereo and image restoration. the belief propagation method produces quite correct results, but it has difficulty in real time implementation because of higher computational complexity than other stereo methods. To relieve this problem, in this paper, we propose a fast algorithm of the belief propagation method. Energy function consists of a data term and a smoothness tern. The data term usually corresponds to the difference in brightness between correspondences, and smoothness term indicates the continuity of adjacent pixels. Smoothness information is created from messages, which are assigned using four different message arrays for the pixel positions adjacent in four directions. The processing time for four message arrays dominates 80 percent of the whole program execution time. In the proposed method, we propose an algorithm that dramatically reduces the processing time require in message calculation, since the message.; are not produced in four arrays but in a single array. Tn the last step of disparity extraction process, the messages are called in the single integrated array and this algorithm requires 1/4 computational complexity of the conventional method. Our method is evaluated by comparing the disparity error rates of our method and the conventional method. Experimental results show that the proposed method remarkably reduces the execution time while it rarely increases disparity error.
The purpose of this study was to analyze landslide susceptibility in the Pyeongchang area using Weight of Evidence (WOE) and Evidential Belief Function (EBF) as probability models and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) as a machine learning model in a geographic information system (GIS). This study examined the widespread shallow landslides triggered by heavy rainfall during Typhoon Ewiniar in 2006, which caused serious property damage and significant loss of life. For the landslide susceptibility mapping, 3,955 landslide occurrences were detected using aerial photographs, and environmental spatial data such as terrain, geology, soil, forest, and land use were collected and constructed in a spatial database. Seventeen factors that could affect landsliding were extracted from the spatial database. All landslides were randomly separated into two datasets, a training set (50%) and validation set (50%), to establish and validate the EBF, WOE, and ANN models. According to the validation results of the area under the curve (AUC) method, the accuracy was 74.73%, 75.03%, and 70.87% for WOE, EBF, and ANN, respectively. The EBF model had the highest accuracy. However, all models had predictive accuracy exceeding 70%, the level that is effective for landslide susceptibility mapping. These models can be applied to predict landslide susceptibility in an area where landslides have not occurred previously based on the relationships between landslide and environmental factors. This susceptibility map can help reduce landslide risk, provide guidance for policy and land use development, and save time and expense for landslide hazard prevention. In the future, more generalized models should be developed by applying landslide susceptibility mapping in various areas.
This study has proposed a data fusion method based on the Dempster-Shafer evidence theory The Dempster-Shafer fusion uses mass functions obtained under the assumption of class-independent Gaussian assumption. In the Dempster-Shafer approach, uncertainty is represented by 'belief interval' equal to the difference between the values of 'belief' function and 'plausibility' function which measure imprecision and uncertainty By utilizing the Dempster-Shafer scheme to fuse the data from multiple sensors, the results of classification can be improved. It can make the users consider the regions with mixed classes in a training process. In most practices, it is hard to find the regions with a pure class. In this study, the proposed method has applied to the KOMPSAT-EOC panchromatic image and LANDSAT ETM+ NDVI data acquired over Yongin/Nuengpyung. area of Kyunggi-do. The results show that it has potential of effective data fusion for multiple sensor imagery.
