Soil Application of Metarhizium anisopliae JEF-314 Granules to Control, Flower Chafer Beetle, Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis

  • Root-feeding Scarabaeidae, particularly white grubs are considered among the most harmful coleopteran insect pests in turfgrass. In this work, sixteen entomopathogenic fungal species were assayed against flower chafer beetle, Protaetia brevitarsis (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) and Metarhizium anisopliae JEF-314 showed high virulence. The control ability of the isolate JEF-314 has been in detail tested for a model insect flower chafer beetle. Further analyses showed insect stage-dependent virulence where the fungal virulence was the highest against smaller instar larvae. Additionally, we confirmed that millet-based solid cultured granule was effective against the soil-dwelling larval stage. The isolate also showed a similar ability for a representative pest (Popillia spp.) in laboratory conditions. Our results clearly suggest a high potential of M. anisopliae JEF-314 to control the flower chafer beetle, possibly resulting in controlling of root-feeding white grubs in turfgrass. Based on the insect life cycle and susceptibility to the fungus, late spring and summer time would be the optimum time to apply JEF-314 granules for an effective control. Further characterization of the efficacy of the fungus under field conditions against the Scarabaeidae beetles might provide an efficient tool to control this beetle in an environment-friendly way.

  • To assess effects of cold treatment on pupation and emergence of the mulberry longicorn beetle, Apriona germari, the larvae, which ceased feeding, were exposed to three different temperature regimes (2.5, 5 and 7.5$^{\circ}C$) and preservation periods (50, 80, and l10 days). The results indicated that pupation and emergence rates of A. germari were highest at $7.5^{\circ}C$ for 110 days, 40.7% and 37.0%, respectively, demonstrating that the effect of cold treatment on metamorphosis was approximately 3 to 4 fold stronger than that of nontreatment.

Carabid beetle species as a biological indicator for different habitat types of agricultural landscapes in Korea

  • In the current study, several carabid beetle species were proposed as potential biological indicators for different habitat types (levee, upland dike, hillock, and streamside) of agricultural landscapes focusing on agrobiont species. Synuchus arcuaticollis and Synuchus orbicollis were found in all habitat types, indicating that they are general species for all habitat types. Harpalus eous and Synuchus cycloderus are potential bioindicator species for the paddy levee and hillock habitats, respectively. Amara pseudosimplicidens, Anisodactylus punctatipennis, and Chlaenius ocreatus, which occurred widely, and Bembidion morawitzi, which occurred only in the streamside habitat, are potential bioindicators for the streamside habitat.

  • A chymotrpsin gene homologue was cloned from the mulberry longicorn beetle, Apriona germari. The A. germari chymotrypsin cDNA contains an ORF of 950 nucleotides capable of encoding a 283 amino acid polypeptide with a predicted molecular mass of 29151 Da and pI of 9.38. The A. germari chymotrypsin has conserved six cysteine residues and active triad formed by His, Asp and Ser. The deduced amino acid sequence of the A. germari chymotrypsin cDNA was closest in structure to the Anthonomus grandis chymotrypsin. Northern blot analysis revealed that A. germari chymotrypsin showed the midgut-specific expression.

  • Tribolium castaneum은 건전미입(健全米粒)에서 완전한 생활환(生活環)을 완성(完成)하여 쌀에 가해가능성(加害可能性)을 보였으며 그 활동(活動)은 1.3%의 수분함량의 경우는 증가를 초래하였으나 곰팡이의 증식은 오히려 저해하는 경향을 보였다. T. castaneum의 생육은 Asp. repens에 의해 안정화(安定化)되었으나 Asp. niger에 의해서는 지체되었다.

생체모방형 수중다관절 로봇의 유영계획 (Swimming Plans for a Bio-inspired Articulated Underwater Robot)

  • In this paper, we propose a better solution for swimming plans of an articulated underwater robot, Crabster, with a view point of biomimetics. As a biomimetic model of underwater organisms, we chose diving beetles structurally similar to Crabster. Various swimming locomotion of the diving beetle has been observed and sorted by robotics technology through experiments with a high-speed camera and image processing software Image J. Subsequently, coordinated patterns of rhythmic movements of the diving beetle are reproduced by simple control parameters in a parameter space which make it easy to control trajectories and velocities of legs. Furthermore, a simulation was implemented with an approximated model to predict the motion of the robot under development based on the classified forward and turning locomotion. Consequently, we confirmed the applicability of parameterized leg locomotion to the articulated underwater robot through the simulated results by the approximated model.

  • Actinofuranone C (1), a new 3-furanone-bearing polyketide, was isolated from an actinobacterium (Amycolatopsis sp.) associated with a female of the dung beetle, Copris tripartitus Waterhouse. The structure of actinofuranone C was elucidated by the spectroscopic interpretation of NMR, mass, UV, and IR data. The discovery of actinofuranone C indicates that chemical investigation of insect-associated microorganisms would be an effective strategy to explore natural chemical diversity.

A Ground-Beetle, Chlaenius hamifer Chaudoir, New to Korea (Coleoptera: Carabidae)

  • Chlaenius is a large and diverse genus of ground beetle. This colorful beetle recognized from its pubescent elytra and pungent defensive secretions. Subgenus Pachydinodes belonging to the genus Chlaenius were reported eight species from Palaearctic, among them four species, Chlaenius (Pachydinodes) abstersus Bates, C. (P.) pictus Chaudoir, C. (P.) tetragonoderus Chaudoir, C. (P.) virgulifer Chaudoir were reported in Korea up to now. In here, Chlaenius hamifer Chaudoir are report firstly in Korea. Description and photo of adult and aedeagus are provided.

  • The ambrosia beetle, Platypus koryoensis, is an economically important pest affecting oak trees in Korea. Candida kashinagacola was isolated from galleries of the beetle in oak wood and identified by analyses of morphology, physiological properties, and nucleotide sequence of the large subunit ribosomal DNA. This is the first report on Candida species associated with oak wilt disease vectored by the ambrosia beetle, Platypus koryoensis, in Korea.

  • The thermal death kinetics of the Black timber bark beetle, Xylosandrus germanus, was investigated to develop a heat treatment for control of infested wood packing materials used to export goods. To determine the feasibility of microwave irradiation as an alternative control method, laboratory experiments irradiating wooden blocks of Douglas fir ($200{\times}200{\times}250mm$), which were artificially infested with adults, with 2.45 GHz of microwave energy. All (100%) Ambrosia beetle adults were killed by both hot water treatments and microwave irradiation at $52^{\circ}C$ and $58^{\circ}C$, respectively. Probit analyses estimated the internal wood temperature required to produce Probit (0.99) efficacy to be $64.7^{\circ}C$ (95% CI $62.4-69.9^{\circ}C$) at one minute after microwave treatment.
