  • The aphidophagous lady beetle, Harmonia axyridis, is induced to undergo reproductive diapause by low temperature treatment. The diapause of the adult beetle can be maintained without supplying the diet up to 5 months at $4^{\circ}C$. The diapause can be induced any time including during the summer, allowing the beetle to be supplied to the field for the control of aphids through the year. Fecundity and longevity after the reproductive diapause is though to be satisfactory enough for the control of aphids in the field, Methoprene, an analog of reproductive hormone of JH, increases the early fecundity of the beetle.

  • The ovipositional responses of two strains of the cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne F., to thickness, of air- and flue-cured leaf tobacco were investigated. Eggs laid by the strains reared with wheatflour (95%) + yeast (5%) in the laboratory for several years were not different between air - and flue-cured tobacco leaves. There were negative correlations between grades of cured tobacco and ovipositional response, and the regression equation was Y(ovipositional response) : 58.22 - 10.15X(leaf grade). Adults of strains reared on tobacco leaves laid 161.00±80.29 eggs on the first grade of thick flue-cured leaves, and 7.67 ± 5.51 on the second grade of thin air-cured leaves. There was difference in ovipositional responses among different grades within variety, but significant differences were noted between thick and thin tobacco leaves. Key words : ovipositional response, cigarette beetle, Lasiodema sewicome F., tobacco.

  • In these days, researches about underwater robots have been actively in progress for the purposes of ocean detection and resource exploration. Unlike general underwater robots such as ROV(Remotely Operated Vehicle) and AUV(Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) which have propellers, an articulated underwater robot which is called Crabster has been being developed in KORDI(Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute) with many cooperation organizations since 2010. The robot is expected to be able to walk and swim under the sea with its legs. Among many researching fields of this project, we are focusing on a swimming section. In order to find effective swimming locomotion for the robot, we approached this subject in terms of Biomimetics. As a model of optimized swimming organism in nature, diving beetles were chosen. In the paper, swimming motions of diving beetles were analyzed in viewpoint of robotics for applying them into the swimming motion of the robot. After modeling the kinematics of diving beetle through robotics engineering technique, we obtained swimming patterns of the one of living diving beetles, and then compared them with calculated optimal swimming patterns of a robot leg. As the first trial to compare the locomotion data of legs of the diving beetle with a robot leg, we have sorted two representative swimming patterns such as forwarding and turning. Experimental environment has been set up to get the motion data of diving beetles. The experimental equipment consists of a transparent aquarium and a high speed camera. Various swimming motions of diving beetles were recorded with the camera. After classifying swimming patterns of the diving beetle, we can get angular data of each joint on hind legs by image processing software, Image J. The data were applied to an optimized algorithm for swimming of a robot leg which was designed by robotics engineering technique. Through this procedure, simulated results which show trajectories of a robot leg were compared with trajectories of a leg of a diving beetle in desired directions. As a result, we confirmed considerable similarity in the result of trajectory and joint angles comparison.

  • The South Korean hermit beetle has previously been identified as Osmoderma opicum, which is distributed in Japan. Because of its rarity, this species is classified as an endangered species. To date, however, the identity of this species in South Korea has not been conclusively confirmed. To assess the taxonomic status of the hermit beetle occurring in South Korea, we performed a comparative study with the beetle's Eurasian congeners, based on morphological examination and molecular analysis using COI gene sequences. The results clearly showed that the South Korean hermit beetle is identical to Osmoderma caeleste, which has been described from the Russian Far East. Therefore, we suggest that the taxonomic identity of the South Korean hermit beetle is O. caeleste.

  • A method to control the cigarette beetle. Losioderma serricorne F, m cigarettes by using gamma ray irradiation was evaluated When all stages of cigarette beetle were placed in gelatin capsules and irradiated wlth gamma ray. no eggs survived, but mortalities of pupae, larvae and adults exposed to above 0.8 kGy of gamma ray were only from 0 to 30%. Similar results were also obtained in the control efficacy of the beetle when seuqal kinds ot currently produced ngarettes containing m gelatin capsules were inadhated with gamma ray The cigarette beetle adults and larvae surviving gamma ray inadiatlon were reared on artificial d~etsto show that there were no reproduc. tions was observed in the second generation. The survival periods for each growth stage became shoter with increase gamma ray dosage. The fouirh instar larvae had the longest sulvlvai periods No sign~ficant changes of cigarette flavor and taste were noticed alter gamma ray inadiation. The cigarette packet, metal fotl for packet and cigarette paper by the inad~atlon were not discolored by irradiation.

  • The burned pine forest may change into the grassland with bushes. However, it is likely that forest insects immigrated from the adjacent forest may be temporally abundant in the burned forest. This study was conducted to observe the immigration of insects for a year since forest fire. Beetle fauna in burned forest was compared with that in unburned forest in Goseong in Gwangwon province where the big fire was occurred and burned 3,762 ha of forest in 1996. The 381 individuals of 60 beetle species was collected from the burned forest, whereas the 370 individuals of 63 beetle species from the unburned forest. There was no difference in abundance and species richness of beetle fauna between burned forest and unburned forest. Most of abundant beetle species were collected from burned forest as well as unburned forest. Seasonal occurrence of the insects in burned forest were similar to those in unburned forest. These indicate active immigration of insects in burned forest in early season after fire. The beetles dwelling on vegetation were more actively immigrated into burned forest compared with those foraging in ground.

  • This study investigated the techniques applied in the manufacturing of the horse trappings with jewel beetle adornment excavated from Geumgwanchong Tomb, with a focus on the use of jewel beetle wings. It is revealed that the wings of jewel beetles were stripped of their upper skeletal parts and applied as ornamentation under the gilt-bronze openwork plate, and no additional process was applied to improve adhesion. The horse trappings from Geumgwanchong Tomb include saddles, stirrups, horse strap pendants, and bamboo mudguards, but most of the components except the stirrups are failing or lost, making it difficult to identify the manufacturing techniques. The techniques used to affix the jewel beetle wings vary depending on the support materials. Small chisels were used to fix the jewel beetle wings to the stirrups and saddle made of wooden supports. In the case of the bamboo mudguards and metal artifacts, the wings were fixed with lacquer and then combined with the gilt-bronze openwork plate using pressure.

  • While the darkling beetle, Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) is considered a pest of stored products, it does not pose a significant economic threat to this industry. The grains these beetles feeding on are often already damaged. However, the beetle is now being treated as the foremost premise pest in the poultry industry in many countries of the world. Recently, the darkling beetle has also infested in broiler chicken houses of Korea. The problems caused by this pest destroy the insulate facilities of poultry houses, reduce chick's overall performance, transmit pathogenic organisms, and have been leading to substantial economic losses for poultry producers. Therefore, we conducted surveys on the status of infestation and damage of this pest in broiler chicken houses. Because there is no simple one step process that will completely eliminate darkling beetle populations from broiler facilities, we would like to outline further studies on the proper control measures.

  • We evaluated two herbal plants, basil (Ocimum basilicum) and lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), for their potential as repellent plants in the management of striped flea beetle (Phyllotreta striolata), in organic production of chinese cabbage. It was confirmed that striped flea beetle avoided these two herbal plants in olfactometer experiment. We conducted field experiment in which the suppressive effect of the two selected herbal plants and cruciferous crops preferred by striped flea beetle were evaluated through cultivating as inter crops and border crops, respectively. In inter-cropping experiment, unlike in vitro test, the density of striped flea beetle was low in basil- or mustard-intercropping cultivation plot, but high in lemon balm-intercropping cultivation plot. In border cropping experiment, the density of striped flea beetle on chinese cabbage in lemon balm or basil cultivation plot were approximately zero. As a result of this study, we think that border cropping of lemon balm or basil can be used to reduce preventively striped flea beetle of chinese cabbage under organic farming system.
