In this study, 4 gases containing typical chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were treated by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The typical chlorinated VOCs are dichloromethane (DCM), trichloromethane (TCM), carbon tetrachloride (CTC) and trichloroethylene (TCE). The removal efficiency (RE) and the products of chlorinated VOCs by UV irradiation are investigated. At this time, 2 types of background gas (air and nitrogen) were used to figure out the RE by photooxidation and photolysis. The specification of UV-lamp used in this study was low-pressure mercury lamp emitting wavelength of 185~254 nm. The experimental conditions were set as initial VOC concentration of $180{\pm}10ppm$, empty bed retention time (EBRT) of 53 s, temperature of $23{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity of $65{\pm}5%$. In the photolysis condition with nitrogen ($N_2$) as background gas, the averaged RE of the 4 types of chlorinated VOCs was about 24% higher than that with photooxidation; and the REs of VOCs except CTC were confirmed as >99%. The composition of off-gases after UV photooxidation in air was investigated and several intermediates from DCM, TCM and TCE were detected by GC/MS. Among them, phosgene which is a toxics was detected as an intermediate of TCM. In addition, the concentration of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in the off-gases was measured to calculate the mineralization rate (MR). With the photooxidation, TCE showed the highest RE (>99%) while MR was the lowest (17%); and the MR of DCM was the highest (86%). In addition, particulate matters (PM) in the off-gases was also detected and high concentrated $PM_{10}$ ($21,580{\mu}g{\cdot}m^{-3}$) and $PM_{2.5}$ ($6,346{\mu}g{\cdot}m^{-3}$) were detected in TCE off-gas. More than 99% of the chlorinated VOCs could be removed using UV254-185 nm lamp, while it is necessary to conduct further studies on the production and treatment of secondary pollutants.
The catalytic combustion of toluene over Pd-Cu/USY zeolite has been examined by using FT-IR spectroscopy in a closed system under dry and humid conditions. The catalytic combustion of toluene (700 ppmv) in the temperature range of $80-220^{\circ}C$ has been investigated by using a fixed bed reactor. The Pd-Cu/USY catalyst showed the highest catalytic performance with respects to the PdO-CuO/USY and Pd/USY. Comparing to $PdO/Al_2O_3$ catalysts, the slight improvement in conversion was observed over PdO/USY catalysts under humid condition since USY zeolite is hydrophobic substrate and water give an additional oxygen source to zeolite surface like oxygen. The reduced catalysts showed more enhanced catalytic activity due to the reduced activation energy of combustion of toluene than oxidized catalysts such as PdO/USY and PdO-CuO/USY.
In this study, we consider gas generation characteristics on pyrolysis of eco-fuel which were made by mixing of Pitch Pine and Lauan sawdust as biomass and polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene as municipal plastic wastes with catalyst in fixed bed reactor. From the result of higher heating value(HHV) measurement and of ultimate analysis, the heating value of plastic wastes and a hydrogen content in plastic sample are higher than biomass. An activation energy was reduced by a catalyst addition. However the catalyst content influence over 5 wt% was insignificant. The yield of hydrogen from gasification of biomass containing plastic wastes such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene were obtained higher than that of sole biomass. The high temperature and mixture ratio of catalyst conditions induced to high hydrogen yield in most of the samples. As the influence of catalyst, the hydrogen yield by catalytic reaction was higher than non-catalytic reaction. We confirmed that Ni-$ZrO_2$ catalyst is more active in increasing the hydrogen yield in comparison with that of carbonate catalyst. The maximum hydrogen yield was 65.9 vol.%(Pitch Pine / polypropylene / 20 wt.% Ni-$ZrO_2$(1:9) at $900^{\circ}C$).
This study was carried out to know the effect of urea addition for composting of paper mill sludge(PMS). For the purpose. PMSs containing 0%, 1.5%, 3%, and 6% urea were composted at aerated static pile(ASP) for about 80day periods. During the composting, the basic physical, chemical, and biological parameters such as temperature, color. C/N ratio, cation exchange capacity, and phytotoxic test were investigated. From the measurement of the parameters, 0~3% urea-containing PMS except for 6% urea-containing PMS showed to be normally stabilized. Thus among these treatments, 0% and 3% urea-containing PMS were applied at agitated bed system(ABS), a pilot plant of a large scale, to evaluate the possibility of practical use. Considering to the changes of the parameters investigated during composting in ASP and ABS, PMS showed to be successfully stabilized in the two facilities. However, when composted with PMS and urea, even the final PMS compost stabilized for a period enough brought out the bright grayish color. So it may be necessary to add a subsidiary amendments such as animal manure to form brown-colored products.
Thermal degradation of styrene dimer fraction (SDF, main compound: 47 wt% of 1,3-diphenylpropane), 5~15% of total products produced during decomposition of waste expanded polystyrene (WEPS) was investigated. Reaction condition of $360^{\circ}C$, and 152 kPa to 202 kPa was an optimum for high pressure degradation. Under this operating condition, the yield of oil was 73.8% and the selectivities to Ben, Tol, EB, SM, and AMS were 0.4, 30.9, 15.0, 19.6, and 4.2%, respectively. Non-catalytic fixed bed continuous degradation was conducted at reaction temperatures of $510{\sim}610^{\circ}C$ and contact time ranges of 2~24 min, where the yield was increased by increasing of reaction temperature and contact time. A $Cr_2O_3$ catalyst showed the highest activity and SM yield among acid, base, and redox catalysts. The conversion of 74.6% and the yield of Ben, Tol, EB, SM, and AMS were 0.4, 21.6, 9.7, 17.9, and 3.5%, respectively at $560^{\circ}C$ and contact time of 24 min. It is thought that styrene is converted to EB and other secondary products throughout the formation of diradicals of styrene.

Reaction of $CO_2$ with $Li_{2}ZrO_{3}$ has been investigated in a TGA and the effects of $H_{2}$ and CO on the removal of $CO_{2}$ using $Li_{2}ZrO_{3}$ were evaluated in a packed bed reactor. The initial rate of $CO_{2}$ removal reaction of $Li_{2}ZrO_{3}$ increased with the increase of gas flow rate up to 100 mL/min and then was maintained, which implied the disappearance of the gas film resistance. The reaction of $CO_{2}$ with $Li_{2}ZrO_{3}$ took place as the first order and the range of optimum temperature was found to be about $500{\sim}600^{\circ}C$. XRD and SEM analysis showed the formation of crystalline $Li_{2}ZrO_{3}$ and porous $Li_{2}ZrO_{3}$/$ZrO_{2}$. The presence of $H_{2}$ did not affect the adsorption of $CO_2$ with $Li_2ZrO_3$. On the other hand, CO inhibited the sorption of $CO_{2}$ into $Li_{2}CO_{3}$(L) on $Li_{2}ZrO_{3}$.

The kinetics and the mechanism for the selective oxidation of ethylene on the supported monolithic silver catalyst were experimentally investigated in a fixed bed tubular reactor. The formation rates of ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide were measured at the atmospheric pressure with various combinations of partial pressures of ethylene and oxygen at temperature range of $225-300^{\circ}C$, conversion with 1.2-7.5 %, and then the mechanism of the selective oxidation of ethylene was verified. Their formation rates fitted with the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechnism. The ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide are produced by reation of adsorbed ethylene with monoatomic oxygen adsorbed on the active sites of Ag-surface, and their formation rate equation are expressed as : $R_{EO}={\frac{k_1K_0{^{1/2}}K_EK_SP_{02}{^{3/2}}P_E}{(1+{\sqrt{K_0P_{02}}}+K_EP_E+K_PP_P)^2(1+{\sqrt{K_SP_{02}})^2}}$$R_C={\frac{k_2K_0{^3}K_EK_S{^{7/2}}P_{02}{^{13/2}}P_E}{(1+{\sqrt{K_0P_{02}}}+K_EP_E+K_PP_P)^7(1+{\sqrt{K_SP_{02}})^7}}$ The activation energies of ethylene oxide and dioxide and carbon dioxide formations can be estimated to be 12.25 and 17.85 Kcal/mol, respectively.
Tetramethyl orthosilicate (TMOS) was obtained by the direct synthesis of methanol with metallic silicon including copper compound as a catalyst and zinc compound as a promoter. The effects of the preheating temperature and the preparation method of the contact mass on TMOS synthesis were investigated. The composition effects of the contact mass which was composed of metallic silicon with copper catalyst and various metallic halide promoters including Zn, Sn or Cd compound were studied also. The best performance on TMOS synthesis was observed on a mixed bed reactor containing metallic silicon preheated with CuCl as a catalyst and $ZnCl_2$ as a promoter. When Cu/Si = 7 wt %, Zn/Cu = 7 wt % was mixed in a slurry phase and activated into contact mass at $380^{\circ}C$, the average selectivity was 87.2% in the silicon consumption of 69.2% at $220^{\circ}C$.
The catalytic oxidation of 1.2-dichloroethane was investigated over precious metal supported on alumina using a fixed bed microreactor. Among the catalysts tested, the conversion of 1.2-dichloroethane decreased in the following order : Ru > Pt > Pd $${\sim_=}$$ Rh and Pt was found to be the most active catalyst for the complete oxidation of 1.2-dichloroethane to $CO_2$. Major products containing carbon were vinyl chloride and $Co_2$ at temperature ranging from 200 to $400^{\circ}C$. The presence of vinyl chloride in products suggests that the first step in the oxidation of 1.2-dichloroethane is dehydrochlorination and the second is oxidation of vinyl chloride to $CO_2$. To investigate the effect of HCl on the activity of the complete oxidation, some experiments were conducted by adding HCl to the feed. The presence of HCl increased the conversion of 1.2-dichloroethane below $300^{\circ}C$ owing to the increase of surface acidity, but it didn't affect the conversion above $300^{\circ}C$. The reversible adsorption of HCl onto catalyst surface inhibited the complete oxidation to $CO_2$.

Ceramic foams are prepared as positive images corresponding to a plastic foam structure which exhibits high porosities (85-90%). This structure makes the ceramic foams attractive as a catalyst in a dry reforming process, because it could reduce a high pressure drop problem. This problem causes low mass and heat transfers in the process. Furthermore, the reactants would shortly contact to catalyst surface, thus low conversion could occur. Therefore, this research addressed the preparation of dry reforming catalysts using a sol-gel catalyst preparation via a polymeric sponge method. The specific objectives of this work are to investigate the effects of polymer foam structure (such as porosity, pore sizes, and cell characteristics) on a catalyst performance and to observe the influences of catalyst preparation parameters to yield a replica of the original structure of polymeric foam. To accomplish these objectives industrial waste foams, polyurethane (PU) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) foams, were used as a polymeric template. Results indicated that the porosity of the polyurethane and polyvinyl alcohol foams were about 99% and 97%. Their average cell sizes were approximate 200 and 50 micrometres, respectively. The cell characteristics of polymer foams exhibited the character of a high permeability material that can be able to dip with ceramic slurry, which was synthesized with various viscosities, during a catalyst preparation step. Next, morphology of ceramic foams was explored using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and catalyst properties, such as; temperature profile of catalyst reduction, metal dispersion, and surface area, were also characterized by $H_2-TPR$ and $H_2-TPD$ techniques, and BET, respectively. From the results, it was found that metal-particle dispersion was relatively high about 5.89%, whereas the surface area of ceramic foam catalysts was $64.52m^2/g$. Finally, the catalytic behaviour toward hydrogen production through the dry reforming of methane using a fixed-bed reactor was evaluated under certain operating conditions. The approaches from this research provide a direction for further improvement of marketable environmental friendly catalyst production.
