  • In this paper, the thermal effects on the performance of floating ring journal bearing are investigated theoretically. The numerical analyses include pressure drop at inner film due to a centrifugal force, fluid momentum effects of supply oil into inner film and thermal effects in lubricating films. All performance data are presented as the rotating speed of journal from 10,000 rpm to 70,000 rpm.

  • Turbine journal bearings are designed to support the weight of the rotors on a hydrodynamic oil film and to provide dynamic stability to the rotor system. The life time of journal bearings is infinite theoretically because the journal bearings are separated from the shaft journal by oil film. But poor design, assembly, operation and maintenance can cause problems to the journal bearings. The FMEA(Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) results of the journal bearings show that frequent maintenance of the journal bearings can cause failures and reduction of the bearing life. Therefore, the maintenance periods and history of the journal bearings with the bearing FMEA results are reviewed in order to establish the optimized maintenance period of the journal bearing for the nuclear power plants. Consequently it is necessary to maintain a best condition of lubrication system, reject time-based maintenance and perform the condition-based maintenance of journal bearings in order to maintain optimum condition of the journal bearing.

  • As fuel cell system is environmental friendly generator, its performance depends on its air supply system. Because, fuel cell stack generates electrical energy by electron and the electron is generated by reacting between air and hydrogen. So, more and more compressed air is supplied, more and more the energy can be obtained. In this study, turbo-expander supported by air foil bearing is introduced as the air supply system used by fuel cell systems. The turbo-expander is a turbo machine which operates at high speed, so air foil bearings suit its purpose for the bearing elements. Analysis for confirming the stability and endurance is conducted. Based on FDM and Newton-Raphson method, characteristics of air foil bearing, dynamic coefficients, pressure field and load capacity, are obtained. Using the characteristics of air foil bearing, the rotordynamic analysis is performed by finite element method. The analysis (stability analysis and critical speed map) shows that turbo-expander is stability at running speed. After the analysis, the test process and results are presented. The goals of test are running up to 90,000 RPM, flow rate of 150 $m^3/h$ and pressure ratio of 1.15. The test results show that the aerodynamic performance and stability of turbo-expander are satisfied to the primary goals.

  • Background: Flexible flat foot is that the medial longitudinal arch collapses in weight bearing and returns normal arch when weight is removed and the weight bearing shifts toward medial part of the foot, which can cause pathological problems in the alignment of the lower extremities and the entire body. Objective: To compare the foot pressure for adults with flexible flat foot. Design: Quasi-Experimental Study Methods: 24 participants with flexible flat foot were recruited and were randomly divided into Visual feedback Short Foot Exercise (VSFE) group and Short Foot Exercise (SFE) group. To compare changes of foot pressure about pre and post intervention, the contact pressure measurement was conducted. Results: In the VSFE, significant differences were observed for the foot pressure of the 1st toe, 1st, 3rd and 4-5th metatarsal, midfoot, medial and lateral heel (p<.05). The foot pressure of the 3rd and 4-5th metatarsal, midfoot showed significant differences in the SFE (p<.05). The contact pressure of the 1st toe, 3rd metatarsal showed significant differences between the groups. Conclusions: Visual feedback short foot exercise can be useful for moving the pressure from medial to lateral part, and can prevent possible pathological problems.

  • The anisotropic pressure distribution of the hydrodynamic bearing may generate the unstable vibration phenomenon over a certain speed. These vibrations, known as whirl, whip or rotor instability, cannot be sustained over a wide range of rotational spees. Besides these vibrations not only perturb the normal operation of a rotating machine, but may also cause serious damage to the machinery system. And, it is really impossible to change one parameter without changing others, or difficult to fabricate the modified non-circular type bearing, with all the other cures used just now, In this study, hybrid bearing with magnetic exciter is designed for stability improvement of hydrodynamic bearing rotor system without changing mechanical parameters. For stability study, eigenvalue study of the bearing-rotor system is executed by finite element method and results of analyses and experiments show the possibilities of the stability improvement of the hydrodynamic bearing system by using the electricmagnetic force.

  • This study presents a method for determining bearing stiffness and damping coefficients of air-lubricated slider bearing, and shows influences of air-bearing surface geometry(recess depth, crown an d pivot location) on flying attitude and dynamic characteristics. To derive the dynamic lubrication equation, the perturbation method is applied to the generalized lubrication equation which based on linearized Boltzmann equation. The generalized lubrication equation and the dynamic lubrication equation are converted to a control volume formulation, and then, the static and dynamic pressure distributions are calculated by finite difference method. The recess depth and crown of the slider show significantly influence on flying attitude and dynamic characteristics comparing with those of pivot location.

  • It is very important to improve the durability and reliability of crankshaft because of conflicting demands for lower fuel consumption and higher power output. In this study, for the crankshaft bearing design, analyses were conducted to determine the lubrication characteristics such as oil flow rate, minimum oil film thickness, friction force and increase of oil temperature at main bearing and connecting rod bearing. Additionally, supplied oil pressure and temperature effects on the bearings were simulated to figure out lubrication characteristics on the bearings. Finally the effects of increasing the bearing width and clearance were introduced on the lubrication characteristics.

  • In case of bent axis type axial piston hydraulic pump or motor, hydrostatic bearing used to achieve the lubrication effect on the mechanical sliding contact areas between the following pairs ; piston shoe and swash plate, valve plate and cylinder block, piston and cylinder block, etc. In this research, we designed two pairs of spherical ball joint in witch connecting rod piston end. The one is not hydrostatic bearing, the other is designed with spherical hydrostatic bearing in point of view minimum pumping power loss. By varying supply pressure on the piston, we can know that it is possible to reduce the friction torque by using hydrostatic bearing designed one. Finally, by comparing the results of driving torque between the two models, it was verified that the spherical hydrostatic bearing is well designed.

  • Model tests on free standing pile groups and piled footings with varying a pile spacing in two layered soils are carried out. The influence of pile cap on the behaviors of end bearing pile groups is analyzed by comparing the bearing behavior in piled footings with those in a single pile, a shallow footing(cap alone) and free standing pile groups. From the test results, it is found that the bearing characteristics of cap-soil-pile system are related with load levels and pile spacings. Before yield, the bearing resistance by cap is not fully mobilized, however, as the applied load increases, the bearing resistance of cap approaches to that of cap alone and settlement hardening occurs after yield due to the compaction caused by the contact pressure between cap and soil. By the cap-soil-pile interaction, shaft friction and point resistance of piles considerably increase with dependency of pile spacings. In two layered soil, the increasing effect of dilatancy in dense sandy soil adjacent to pile tips, increases the point resistance of pile.

  • Foil gas bearing is a noncontact bearing operated by coupled interaction between hydrodynamic pressure of viscous fluid and elastic deformation of foil structure. It has valuable advantages, such as low power loss, long life, oilless environment and low vibration, over conventional bearings for the high speed applications. A high speed BLDC motor adopting the foil bearing has been developed. It is designed to have 38㎾ power at 100,000 RPM for a cryogenic cooler whose operating fluid is neon. In this paper, structural development details especially for the foil gas bearing and rotordynamics are presented.
