Automotive wheel bearings are a critical component of vehicles that support their weight and facilitate rotation. Life and stiffness are significant performance characteristics of wheel bearings. Designing wheel bearings involves finding optimal design variables that satisfy both performances. CO2 emission reduction and fuel efficiency regulations attribute to the recent increase in design requirements for lightweight and compact automotive parts while maintaining performance. However, achieving a design that maintains performance while reducing weight poses challenges, as performance and weight are generally inversely proportional. In this study, we perform design optimization of automotive wheel bearings considering life and stiffness. We develop a program that calculates the basic rated life and modified rated life based on international standards for evaluating the life of wheel bearings. We develop a regression equation using regression analysis to address the time-consuming stiffness analysis during repetitive analysis. We perform ANOVA and main effect analyses to understand the statistical characteristics of the developed regression equation. Furthermore, we verify its reliability by comparing the predicted and test results. We perform design optimization using the developed life prediction program, stiffness regression equation and weight regression equation. We select bearing specifications and geometry as design variables, weight as the cost function, and life and stiffness as constraints. Through design optimization, we investigate the influence of design variables on the cost function and constraints by comparing the initial and optimal design values.

The formed tool is used to machine the geometrical shape of bearing rubber seal efficiently. The bearing rubber seal has complex geometry for the complicated geometrical shape to prevent leakage of lubricant oil and influx of the dust effectively. Because it is difficult to machine the unique shape exactly by the conventional tool, the formed tool is used in machining a rubber seal die. In this paper, It is performed to investigate machining characteristic of the formed tool; cutting edge wear, cutting force, and surface quality. Also, an efficient precision machining condition is proposed, and the inspection results of rubber seal with CAI are discussed.

This paper presents the formed tool to machine a milli-structure mold. The formed tool is used to machine the geometrical shape of bearing rubber seal for precision machining. The bearing rubber seal has milli-sized complex geometry. Because it is difficult to machine the unique shape exactly by the conventional tool, the formed tool is used in machining die of the bearing seal. In this paper, it is performed to investigate properties of the formed tool; tool wear, cutting force and machined surface roughness. Tool wear increases rapidly with clearance angle Increase. Thus, the dimension accuracy is affected by the clearance angle.

As functional requirement of massive digital information storage devices are on a trend for the higher data transfer rate and lower cost, many different technical efforts are being tested and implemented in the industry. FDB(Fluid Dynamic Soaring) is one of the major breakthroughs in rotor design in terms of TMR budget. Although FDB analysis based on Reynolds' equation is well established and popularly being used for DB design especially for the estimation of bearing stiffness, there are obvious limitations in the approach due to the inherent assumptions. A generalized analysis tool employing the full Navier-Stokes equation and the energy balance is to be beneficial for detailed FDB design In this publication, an efficient geometry modeling method is presented that provides fully integrated inputs for general FVM/FDM codes. By virtue of the flexibility of the presented method, many different detailed FDB design and analysis are carried over with ease.

This paper presents an approach to optimally design the air-bearing surface (ABS) of the optical flying head for near-field recording technology (NFR). NFR is an optical recording technology using very small beam spot size by overcoming the limit of beam diffraction. One of the most Important problems in NFR is a head disk interface (HDI) issue over the recording band during the operation. A multi-criteria optimization problem is formulated to enhance the flying performances over the entire recording band during the steady state. The optimal solution of the slider, whose target flying height is 50 nm, is automatically obtained. The flying height during the steady state operation becomes closer to the target values than those fur the initial one. The pitch and roll angles are also kept within suitable ranges over the recording band. Especially, all of the air-bearing stiffness are drastically increased by the optimized geometry of the air bearing surface.
In the present study, we develop an analysis module to be applicable to design of sliding thrust bearings. The pressure equation is solved by using the finite element method. Average lubricant temperature is obtained from using the energy balance method. The module developed has been applied to three types of thrust bearing, such as tapered-land thrust bearings of angular and diamond types, and tilting-pad thrust bearings. Effects of the dam of the tapered-lad thrust bearings have also been investigated. It has been seen that the tapered-land thrust bearings of angular type result in the highest load capacity, while the tilting pad thrust bearings result in the lowest lubricant temperature. It has also been seen that the dam in the tapered-land thrust bearings increases both the load capacity and lubricant temperature.

This paper describes the process design for hot forging of bearing hub. Forging processes of bearing hub are simulated using the rigid-plastic finite element method. In the process called closed die forging without flash, the design of blocker geometry is of critical importance. Forging processes designs are take advantage of computer aided Process planning and experts. But that is difficult to predict metal flow line. So the preform is designed by the expert, and modified through predict metal flow line by CAE. This paper is to approach preform design considered defect such as metal flow and unfitting etc. at the finisher process.

An automotive wheel bearing is important part that translates rotating motion and bears vehicle weight. Recently, in accordance with the demands for $CO_2$ emission reduction and fuel economy regulation, the requirements for the weight reduction and miniaturization of vehicles has increased. Therefore, life evaluation technology of the bearings has increased in necessity. Since the bearing life is affected by many parameters such as bearing geometry, bearing specifications, and vehicle specifications, it is difficult to predict. In this paper, the bearing life was tested by varying the applied load and rotation speed and comparing them with the basic rating life and modified rating life that were suggested in ISO standards. From the results, it was found that there was a difference between the test life and theoretical life and modified rating life than basic rating life was to be relatively well predicted by test life.
Bearing capacity of open-ended piles depends largely on inner frictional resistance, which is influenced by the degree of soil plugging. While a fully-plugged open-ended pile produces a bearing capacity similar to a closed-ended pile, fully coring (or unplugged) pile produces a much smaller bearing capacity. In general, open-ended piles are driven under partially-plugged mode. The formation of soil plug may depend on many factors, including wall thickness at the pile tip (or inner pile diameter), sleeve height of the thickened wall at the pile tip and relative density. In this paper, we studied the effects of wall thickness at the pile base and sleeve height of the thickened wall at the pile tip on bearing capacity using laboratory model tests. The tests were conducted on a medium dense sandy ground. The model piles with different tip thicknesses and sleeve heights of thickened wall at the pile tip were tested. The results were also discussed using the incremental filling ratio and plug length ratio, which are generally used to describe the degree of soil plugging. The results showed that the bearing capacity increases with tip thickness. The bearing capacity of piles of smaller sleeve length (e.g., ${\leq}1D$; D is pile outer diameter) was found to be dependent on the sleeve length, while it is independent on the sleeve length of greater than a 1D length. We also found that the soil plug height is dependent on wall thickness at the pile base. The results on the incremental filling ratio revealed that the thinner walled piles produce higher degree of soil plugging at greater penetration depths. The results also revealed that the soil plug height is dependent on sleeve length of up to 2D length and independent beyond a 2D length. The piles of a smaller sleeve length (e.g., ${\leq}1D$) produce higher degree of soil plugging at shallow penetration depths while the piles of a larger sleeve length (e.g., ${\geq}2D$) produce higher degree of soil plugging at greater penetration depths.

This paper presents a finite element method to analyze the free vibration of a flexible HDD composed of the spinning disk-spindle system with fluid dynamic bearings(FDBs), the head-suspension-actuator with pivot bearings, and the base plate with complicated geometry. Experimental modal testing shows that the proposed method well predicts tue vibration characteristics of a HDD. This research also shows that even the vibration motion of the spinning disk corresponding to half-speed whirl and the pure disk mode are transferred to a head-suspension-actuator and base plate through the air bearing and the pivot bearing consecutively. The proposed method can be effectively extended to investigate the forced vibration of a HDD and to design a robust HDD against shock.
