A theoretical calculation model for ship stern bearings with large hull deformation is established and validated theoretically and experimentally. A hull simulation model is established to calculate hull deformations corresponding to the reaction force of stern bearings under multi-factor and multi-operating conditions. The results show that in the condition of wave load, hull deformation shows randomness; the aft stern tube bearing load obeys the Gaussian distribution and its value increases significantly compared with the load under static, and the probability of aft stern tube bearing load greater than 1 is 65.7%. The influence laws and levels between hull deformation and bearing reaction force are revealed, and suggestions for ship stern bearing specifications are proffered accordingly.
Rotating machinery often encounters excessive vibration due to various excitation sources. Among others, the synchronous excitation due to rotating unbalance and initial deformation is acknowledged to be one of the major sources of vibration in rotor-bearing systems. In this paper, a synchronous response analysis method in the presence of the initial deformation is proposed to investigate the peculiar effect of the initial deformation on the response of general flexible rotor-bearing systems with rotational speed dependency and the anisotropy. Experiments are performed and compared with computational results to verify the proposed analysis method. Two numerical examples are also provided to illustrate the characteristics of the synchronous response of general rotor-bearing systems due to the initial deformation.
Transmission error is highly related to gear noise. In order to predict the helical gear noise, transmission error analysis is needed. Up to now, the studies for the transmission error were conducted by the modeling of helical gears only. However, since helical gears are supported by the shaft and bearing, transmission error has the effects of the elements. In this study, the procedure to consider the shaft deformation with bearing stiffness for the transmission error analysis is proposed. To do so, the relationship between gear error and shaft deformation is analytically derived. Shaft deformation with bearing stiffness is analyzed by FEM. It is measured in the experimental test rig by the non-contact displacement sensors. Using the tooth error from tooth modification and the shaft deformation, the effects of shaft on the loaded transmission error are investigated.
This paper focuses on the thermal deformation induced preload change in the tilting pad journal bearing, using a three-dimensional (3D) thermo-hydro-dynamic (THD) approach. Preload is considered as a critical factor in designing the tilting pad journal bearing. The initial preload measured under nil external load and nil thermal gradient is influenced by two factors, namely, the thermal deformation and elastic deformation. Thermal deformation is due to a temperature distribution in the bearing pads, whereas the elastic deformation is due to fluid forces acting on the pads. This study focuses on the changes induced in preload and film clearance due to thermal deformation. The generalized Reynolds equation is used to evaluate the force of the fluid and the 3D energy equation is used to calculate the temperature of the lubricant. The abovementioned equations are combined by establishing a relationship between viscosity and temperature. The heat transfer within the bearing pads, the lubricant, and the spinning journal is calculated using the heat flux boundary condition. The 3D Finite Element Method (FEM) is used in modeling the (1) heat conduction in the spinning journal and bearing pads, (2) thermal gradient induced thermal distortion of the spinning journal and pads, and (3) viscous shearing, and heat conduction and convection in a thin film. This evaluation method has an increased fidelity, and it can prove to be a cost-effective tool that can be used by designers to predict the dynamic behavior of a bearing.
The connecting rod bearing, which is subjected to periodical dynamic loading, is an impoRant component of the reciprocating engine. In the operation of this bearing, significant parameters are the oil film thickness and the film pressure. Peak film pressures of 20-30 MPa are not uncommon. So the elastic deformation of the bearing housing can have a significant effect on the bearing performance. In this study, a numerical analysis of connecting rod bearing is investigated. Elastic deformation of the bearing housing is considered in the analysis. Separate hydrodynamic and structural analysis are coupled through a direct iterative process. It is shown that as the result of the elastic deformation of the bearing housing, the eccentricity ratio is increased, and the minimum value of the minimum film thickness and the maximum value of the maximum film pressure are decreased. The variations of rotational speed and cylinder pressure affect the minimum film thickness and the maximum film pressure variations of the connecting rod bearing.
The hydrostatic slipper bearing is generally used in high pressure axial piston pumps to support the load generated from two surfaces which are sliding relatively at low speed. The object of the bearing is to remove the possibility of direct contact by maintenance of an adequate oil film thickness between two metal surfaces. Because the bearing performance is influenced by the bearing deformation, it is highly dependent on the injection pressure, the bearing surface profile and so on. In this study, the deformation characteristics of a hydrostatic slipper bearing is investigated according to the injection pressure by the finite element analysis. In the analysis, the special boundary condition to take the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) into account is used on the interactive surface. The results, such as bearing deformation, stress and lifting force, obtained from the fully coupled analysis are compared with those from the single step sequential method.
In spindle-bearing system, the displacement characteristics of the bearing by the load applied on the spindle are affected greatly by the assembling tolerance between the spindle and housing assembled to support the bearing. Also in spindle system of rotational operation, the compliance characteristic of the bearing is expected to be varied frequently by the thermal deformation of the spindle and the housing. To predict the thermal deformation of the spindle including heat generation of the bearing, we need to examine the effect on the compliance of spindle-bearing system by the assembling tolerance. In this paper, we proposed the load-displacement relation expression considering the effect which the variation of contact pressure due to the radial directional assembling tolerance between the bearing and the housing influences on the axial and radial directional displacement characteristics of the bearing. Furthermore, for several assembling systems of bearings and housings having all different assembling tolerances, we proposed a method to predict exactly the variation of the bearing preload which is sensitive to the thermal deformation by showing the propriety with experimental results.
Bearings are mechanical components that support loads and transmit rotation. The inner and outer rings come into contact with the rotating mechanism, requiring a very high level of hardness. To meet this requirement, heat treatment is commonly performed. The heat treatment process inherently involves thermal deformation. Particularly in the case of large bearings, significant deformation relative to the bearing's shape can occur, making accurate deformation prediction during heat treatment essential. However, predicting deformation in heat treatment is challenging due to the simultaneous consideration of phase transformation, heat transfer, and bearing deformation. In this study, an analysis of heat treatment-induced deformation in bearings was conducted, taking phase transformation into account. The thermal and mechanical properties were calculated based on the chemical composition of the bearing material. This information was then used to perform a deformation-heat transfer-phase transformation analysis. To validate the reliability of the analysis, experiments were conducted under the same conditions. When comparing the analysis and experimental results, differences in deformation were observed. These differences were attributed to variations in phase transformation conditions between the analysis and experiments. Consequently, it is anticipated that supplementing these results will enable the prediction of deformation while considering phase transformation conditions in bearings.
This study aims to quantify the variation in the performance of a tilting pad journal bearing (TPJB) owing to the elastic deformation of its pad. To this end, we first defined a parameter, "elastic preload", and predicted the changes in the performance of the TPJB, as a function of the preload amount. We used the iso-viscosity Reynolds equation, which ignores the temperature rise due to viscous shear in thin films, and the resultant thermal deformation of the bearing structure. We employed a three-dimensional finite element model to predict the elastic deformation of the bearing pad, and a transient analysis, to converge to a static equilibrium condition of the flexible pads and journal. Conducting a modal coordinate transformation helped us avoid heavy computational issues arising from a mesh refinement in the three-dimensional finite element pad model. Moreover, we adopted the Hertzian contact model to predict the elastic deformation at the pivot location. With the aforementioned overall strategy, we predicted the performance changes owing to the elastic deformation of the pad under varying load conditions. From the results, we observed an increase in the preload due to the pad elastic deformation.
