  • Many researches have been conducted to describe the elastic and inelastic behavior of H-shaped beams with web openings, and were generally concentrated on the uniaxial loading conditions. With previous research results, the formulae for the design of beams with web openings, considering local buckling, have been proposed by Darwin. Although the formulae are so simple and useful to apply to real situations, it needs more research on cyclic loading conditions. In this experimental study, a total of seven H-shaped beams with circular web openings under cyclic loading conditions were investigated. The dimension criteria were based on the formulae proposed by Darwin. The suitability of the existing design formulae, the effects of plastic hinges on beams with web openings, and the local bucking around the web openings to the beam strength under cyclic loading were also investigated through by the observations of the behavior of these beams with various dimensional openings.

  • In this paper, an experimental evaluation of shear strength of wide beam is presented. By the experiment in paper, shear strength depending on parameter of shear reinforcement by GFRP plate on wide beam is investigated. Specimens are 7 of reinforced by GFRP plate with openings. The shear reinforcement is manufactured into plate shape with openings to ensure perfect integration with concrete. The test was performed on 7 specimens. The parameters are including number of shear reinforcement by GFRP plates and center-to-center spacing between vertical strip. We analysed the crack, failure mode, strain, shear strength of specimens. A calculation of the shear strength of reinforced wide beam with GFRP plate based on ACI 318-11. The result of the experiment shows that the GFRP plate is works successfully as shear reinforcement in the wide beam.

  • Cellular and castellated steel beams are used to obtain higher stiffness and bending capacity using the same weight of steel. In addition, the beam openings may be used as a pass for different mechanical fixtures such as ducts and pipes. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of different parameters on both elastic and inelastic critical buckling stresses of steel web plates with openings. These parameters are plate aspect ratio; opening shape (circular or rectangular); end distance to the first opening; opening spacing; opening size; plate slenderness ratio; steel grade; and initial web imperfection. The web/flange interaction has been simplified by web edge restraints representing simply supported boundary conditions. A numerical parametric study has been performed through linear and nonlinear finite element (FE) models, where the FE results have been verified against both experimental and numerical results in the literature. The web plates are subject to in-plane linearly varying compression with different loading patterns, ranging from uniform compression to pure bending. A buckling stress modification factor (${\beta}$-factor) has been introduced as a ratio of buckling stress of web plate with openings to buckling stress of the corresponding solid web plate. The variation of ${\beta}$-factor against the aforementioned parameters has been reported. Furthermore, the critical plate slenderness ratio separating elastic buckling and yielding has been identified and discussed for two steel grades of DIN-17100, namely: ST-37/2 and ST-52/3. The FE results revealed that the minimum ${\beta}$-factor is 0.9 for web plates under uniform compression and 0.7 for those under both compression and tension.

  • In this study, two common types of laterally supported castellated beams are considered as design problems: beams with hexagonal openings and beams with circular openings. The main goal of manufacturing these beams is to increase the moment of inertia and section modulus, which results in greater strength and rigidity. These types of open-web beams have found widespread use, primarily in buildings, because of great savings in materials and construction costs. Hence, the minimum cost is taken as the design objective function and the Colliding Bodies Optimization (CBO) method is utilized for obtaining the solution of the design problem. The design methods used in this study are consistent with BS5950 Part 1 and Part 3, and Euro Code 3. A number of design examples are considered to optimize by CBO algorithm. Comparison of the optimal solution of the CBO algorithm with those of the Enhanced Charged System Search (ECSS) method demonstrate the capability of CBO in solving the present type of design problem. It is also observed that optimization results obtained by the CBO algorithm for three design examples have less cost in comparison to the results of the ECSS algorithm. From the results obtained in this paper, it can be concluded that the use of beam with hexagonal opening requires smaller amount of steel material and it is superior to the cellular beam from the cost point of view.

  • In the buildings with long spans and high floors, such as logistics warehouses and semiconductor factories, it is difficult to install supporting posts under beams during construction. Therefore, the size of structural members becomes larger inevitably, resulting in a significant increase in construction costs. Accordingly, a prestressed hybrid wide flange (PHWF) beam with hollowed steel webs was developed, which can reduce construction costs by making multiple openings in the web of the steel member embedded in concrete. However, since multiple openings exist and prestress is introduced only into the bottom flange concrete, it is necessary to identify the shear resistance mechanism of the PHWF beam. This study presents experimental shear tests of PHWF beams with hollowed steel webs. Four PHWF beams with cast-in-place (CIP) concrete were fabricated, with key variables being the width and spacing of the steel webs embedded in the concrete and the presence of shear reinforcing bars, and web-shear tests were conducted. The shear behavior of the PHWF beam, including crack patterns, strain behavior of steel webs, and composite action between the prestressed bottom flange and CIP concrete, were measured and analyzed comprehensively. The test results showed that the steel web resists external shear forces through shear deformation when its width is sufficiently large, but as its width decreased, it exerted its shear contribution through normal deformation in a manner similar to that of shear reinforcing bars. In addition, it was found that stirrups placed on the cross section where the steel web does not exist contribute to improving the shear strength and deformation capacity of the member. Based on the shear behavior of the specimens, a straightforward calculation method was proposed to estimate the web-shear strength of PHWF beams with CIP concrete, and it provided a good estimation of the shear strength of PHWF beams, more accurate than the existing code equations.

  • Nowadays, in prefabricated composite construction, composite action between steel beam and concrete slab is often achieved with positioning of shear connectors in envisaged openings of concrete slabs. Prefabricated concrete slabs are used for composite steel-concrete buildings and bridges, both for the construction of new structures and for renovation of existing ones, significantly reducing construction time. Development of different types of shear connectors represent alternative solution to the traditionally used headed studs, considering their shear resistance, stiffness and ductility. New types of shear connectors tend to reduce the construction time and overall construction cost. Mechanically fastened shear connectors represent a viable alternative to headed studs, considering their fast installation process and shear resistance. X-HVB shear connectors are attached to the steel beam with two cartridge fired pins. The first step towards extensive implementation of X-HVB shear connectors in composite construction is to understand their behaviour through experimental investigation. Results of the push-out tests, in accordance to Eurocode 4, with X-HVB 110 shear connectors positioned in envisaged openings of prefabricated concrete slabs are presented in this paper. The experimental investigation comprised three different specimen's layout. Group arrangement of X-HVB shear connectors in envisaged openings included specimens with minimal recommended distances and specimens with reduced distances between connectors in both directions. Influence of different installation procedures on overall behaviour of the connection is presented, as well as the orientation of shear connectors relative to the shear force direction. Influence of variations is characterized in terms of failure mechanisms, shear resistance and ductility.

  • The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate the relationship of the shear behavior and the variety of width, depth and location of an opening in reinforced concrete deep beams with rectangular web openings, and to present an improved shear strength equation of those members. The main parameters considered were concrete strength(fck), shear span-to-overall depth ratio(a/h), and the size and vortical position of the web openings. Twenty five deep beams were tested under two symmetric loading-points. Test results showed that the shear behavior of deep beams with web openings was influenced by a/h and the size of opening. In addition, the KCI shear design provision is a tendency to be more unconservative according to the increase in a/h and the area-ratio of opening to shear span(Ao/Ash). Based on the concrete strut action of top and bottom member of an opening and the tie action of longitudinal reinforcement, a proper design equation which closely predicts the capacity of deep beams with rectangular openings is developed.

  • The effect of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthening on the behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with web openings is studied. It has been observed that the load-carrying capacity and deflection in the presence of an opening reduced by approximately 50% and 75%, respectively. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite models are first validated with the results obtained from experimental data. Thereafter, a series of parametric studies are conducted for the beam with an opening. In the study, it is observed that a square opening shape is critical in comparison to the elliptical and circular-shaped opening. The web opening located near the support is found to be critically compared to the opening in the middle of the beam. Given the critical opening shape situated at the critical location, the increase in FRP layers enhances the load-deformation behaviour of the FRP-wrapped RC beam. However, the load-deformation responses are not significantly improved beyond a certain threshold value of FRP layers.

  • This paper is an experimental study of the normal strength concrete beam and high strength concrete beam for the analysis of bending and shear behavior. In building structure, the story height can be minimized by providing openings in beams which serves for the utility equipments passing through. The dead space in false ceiling increase construction cost, the good ceiling system such as beam with opening give to economical merits because of a substantial reduction in materials and construction cost. For the analysis on the mechanical behavior of the reinforced high strength and normal strength concrete beams with circular opening in the web, the stress concentration of the circular opening, crack pattern and reinforcing methods were studied. Twenty test pieces with different reinforcing methods and difference concrete strength were tested and their resisting forces and load deflection curves were defined in this study.
