The possibility of energy harvesting as well as vibration of a three-layered beam consisting of two piezoelectric layers and one core layer made of nonpiezoelectric material is investigated using nonlocal strain gradient theory. The three-layered nanobeam is resting on an elastic foundation. Hamilton's principle is used to derive governing equations and associated boundary conditions. The generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) was used to discretize the equations, and the Newmark beta method was used to solve them. The size-dependency of the elastic foundation is considered using two-phase elasticity. The equations, as well as the solution procedure, are validated utilizing some compassion studies. This work can be a basis for future studies on energy harvesting of small scales.

A size dependent bending behavior of piezoelectrical flexoelectric layered perforated functionally graded (FG) composite nanobeam rested on an elastic foundation is investigated analytically. The composite beam is composed of regularly cutout FG core and two piezoelectric face sheets. The material characteristics is graded through the core thickness by power law function. Regular squared cutout perforation pattern is considered and closed forms of the equivalent stiffness parameters are derived. The modified nonlocal strain gradient elasticity theory is employed to incorporate the microstructure as well as nonlocality effects into governing equations. The Winkler as well as the Pasternak elastic foundation models are employed to simulate the substrate medium. The Hamiltonian approach is adopted to derive the governing equilibrium equation including piezoelectric and flexoelectric effects. Analytical solution methodology is developed to derive closed forms for the size dependent electromechanical as well as mechanical bending profiles. The model is verified by comparing the obtained results with the available corresponding results in the literature. To demonstrate the applicability of the developed procedure, parametric studies are performed to explore influences of gradation index, elastic medium parameters, flexoelectric and piezoelectric parameters, geometrical and peroration parameters, and material parameters on the size dependent bending behavior of piezoelectrically layered PFG nanobeams. Results obtained revealed the significant effects both the flexoelectric and piezoelectric parameters on the bending behavior of the piezoelectric composite nanobeams. These parameters could be controlled to improve the size dependent electromechanical as well as mechanical behaviors. The obtained results and the developed procedure are helpful for design and manufacturing of MEMS and NEMS.
In recent years, study of the static response of pavements to moving vehicle and aircraft loads has received significant attention because of its relevance to the design of pavements and airport runways. The static response of beams resting on an elastic foundation and subjected to moving loads was studied by several researchers in the past. However, most of these studies were limited to steady-state analytical solutions for infinitely long beams resting on Winkler-type elastic foundations. Although the modelling of subgrade as a continuum is more accurate, such an approach can hardly be incorporated in analysis due to its complexity. In contrast, the two-parameter foundation model provides a better way for simulating the underlying soil medium and is conceptually more appealing than the one-parameter (Winkler) foundation model. The finite element method is one of the most suitable mathematical tools for analysing rigid pavements under moving loads. This paper presents an improved solution algorithm based on the finite element method for the static analysis of rigid pavements under moving vehicular or aircraft loads. The concrete pavement is discretized by finite and infinite beam elements, with the latter for modelling the infinity boundary conditions. The underlying soil medium is modelled by the Pasternak model allowing the shear interaction to exist between the spring elements. This can be accomplished by connecting the spring elements to a layer of incompressible vertical elements that can deform in transverse shear only. The deformations and forces maintaining equilibrium in the shear layer are considered by assuming the shear layer to be isotropic. A parametric study is conducted to investigate the effect of the position of moving loads on the response of pavement.

In this paper the dynamic analysis of the multi-span beam on elastic foundation, which include discrete transnational and rotational springs, was performed. Furthermore, the effects of the intermediate supports were investigated. As a solution method, first the orthogonal polynomial functions which satisfy both the geometric and dynamic boundary conditions are obtained by imposing the orthogonality conditions. Then, the Galerkin's method is used to obtain the natural frequencies of the system. From numerical tests for various constraint and boundary conditions, it was found that the higher order orthogonal polynomial functions obtained by the present method can be used to get the accurate solution.
Steel laminated elastomeric bearings are commonly used in bridge structures to control displacements and rotations and transfer forces from the superstructure to the substructure. Proper knowledge of design, fabrication and erection procedures is important to ensure stability and adequate structural performance during the lifetime of the bridge. Difference in elevations sometimes leads to large size gaps between the bearing and the girder which makes the grout thickness that is commonly used for leveling deviate beyond standards. This paper investigates the structural response of High Strength Fiber Reinforced Cementitious (HSFRC) thin plinths that are used to close gaps between bearing pads and precast girders. An experimental program was developed for this purpose where HSFRC plinths of different size were cast and tested under vertical loads that simulate bridge loading in service. The structural performance of the plinths was closely monitored during testing, mainly crack propagation, vertical reaction and displacement. Analytically, the HSFRC plinth was analyzed using the beam on elastic foundation theory as the supporting elastomeric bearing pads are highly compressible. Closed form solutions were derived for induced displacement and forces and comparisons were made between analytical and experimental results. Finally, recommendations were made to facilitate the practical use of HSFRC plinths in bridge construction based on its enhanced load carrying capacity in shear and flexure.

Ths paper was aimed to investigate the effect of reinforcement for the deformation characteristics of clayey foundation. Among numerous improvement method of foundation, only geotextil-reinforced foundation and foundation with both geotextile and sand mat which were 2-dimensional model clayey foundations were selected for load test in order to obtain fundamental results in analizing the behavior of the foundation with geotextile. To scrutinize the behavior characteristics and effect of reinforcement, the model foundations were constructed with various conditions on the location of layout of geotextile, the number of layouts and the depth of sand mat As for the technique of the numerical analysis elasto-plastic constitutive model for clayey soil, beam element for geotextile and elastic model for sand were respectively employed. Interface element was introduced for the block between materials with different rigidity. Observed values and numerical results were compared with satisfactory correspondence, which proved that the numercial technique developed in this paper was available.
A mathematical model for the nonlinear dynamics of a rotating beam with flexible root attached to a rotating hub with elastic foundation is developed. The model is developed based on the large planar and flexural deformation theory and the potential energy method to account for axial shortening due to bending deformation. In addition the exact nonlinear curvature is used in the system potential energy. The Lagrangian dynamics and the assumed mode method is used to derive the nonlinear coupled equations of motion hub rotation, beam tip deflection and hub horizontal and vertical displacements. The derived nonlinear model is simulated numerically and the results are presented and discussed for the effect of root flexibility, hub stiffness, torque type, torque period and excitation frequency and amplitude on the dynamic behavior of the rotating beam-hub and on its stability.
This article investigates buckling behavior of a multi-phase nanocrystalline nanobeam resting on Winkler-Pasternak foundation in the framework of nonlocal couple stress elasticity and a higher order refined beam model. In this model, the essential measures to describe the real material structure of nanocrystalline nanobeams and the size effects were incorporated. This non-classical nanobeam model contains couple stress effect to capture grains micro-rotations. Moreover, the nonlocal elasticity theory is employed to study the nonlocal and long-range interactions between the particles. The present model can degenerate into the classical model if the nonlocal parameter, and couple stress effects are omitted. Hamilton's principle is employed to derive the governing equations and the related boundary conditions which are solved applying an analytical approach. The buckling loads are compared with those of nonlocal couple stress-based beams. It is showed that buckling loads of a nanocrystalline nanobeam depend on the grain size, grain rotations, porosities, interface, elastic foundation, shear deformation, surface effect, nonlocality and boundary conditions.

This paper deals with the free vibrations of horizontally curved beams on an elastic foundation. Taking into account the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation, the differential equations governing free vibrations of noncircular curved beams resting on Pasternak-type foundations are derived and solved numerically. The lowest three natural frequencies for parabolic curved beams with hinged-hinged and clamped-clamped end restraints are calculated. Numerical results are presented to show the effects on the natural frequencies of the non-dimensional system parameters: the horizontal rise to span length ratio, the Winkler foundation parameter, the shear foundation parameter, and the width ratio of contact area between the beam and foundation.
A beam on elasto-plastic foundation modeling of soldier pile and woodlagging tieback walls or anchored walls was developed and tested. An instrumented full scale tieback wall in sand was constructed at the National Geotechnical Experimentation Bite located on Texas A&M University. The experimental earth pressure deflection relationship (p-y curves) was developed from the measurements. The construction sequence was simulated in the proposed method. The conceptual methodology of an anchored wall design was introduced by using the proposed method. The proposed method was evaluated with the measurements of case histories in sand and clay. A parametric research was performed to study the most influencing factors for the proposed method. It is concluded that the proposed method represents a significant improvement on the prediction of bending moments and deflections of the properly designed walls.
