A modified setup of a CMD technique for high power coherent beam combining was presented to address an issue of low damage threshold of electro-optic modulators. The feasibility of the modified setup was demonstrated by combining eight fiber beams, and it was successfully performed with ${\lambda}/44$ of residual phase error and 100 Hz of control bandwidth. It is expected that the modified CMD setup facilitates ultra-high power coherent beam combination without a limitation caused by the low damage threshold of electro-optic modulators.
Reinforced concrete (RC) beam column joints (BCJ) have mostly exhibited poor seismic performance during several past earthquakes, typically due to the poor-quality concrete or lack of reinforcement detailing typical of pre-code design practice. The present study is motivated towards numerical simulation and seismic fragility assessment of one such RC-BCJ. The BCJ is loaded to failure and strengthened using Ultra High Performance-Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHP-HFRC) jacketing. The strengthening is performed for four different BCJ specimens, each representing an intermediate damage state before collapse. viz., slight, moderate, severe, and collapse. From the numerical simulation of all the BCJ specimens, an attempt is made to correlate different modelling and design parameters of the BC joint with respect to the damage states. In addition, seismic fragility analysis of the original as well as the retrofitted damaged BCJ specimens show the relative enhancement achieved in each case.
The efficacy of a technique for the rehabilitation and strengthening of RC beam-column connections damaged due to cyclic loading was investigated. The repair mainly uses epoxy resin infused under pressure into the damaged region to retrieved back the lost capacity and then strengthening using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets for capacity enhancement. Three common types of reduced scale RC exterior beam-column connections namely (a) beam-column connection with beam weak in flexure (BWF) (b) beam-column connections with beam weak in shear (BWS) and (c) beam-column connections with column weak in shear (CWS) subjected to reversed cyclic loading were considered for the experimental investigation. The rehabilitated and strengthened specimens were also subjected to similar cyclic displacement. Important parameters related to seismic capacity such as strength, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation, and ductility were evaluated. The rehabilitated connections exhibited equal or better performance and hence the adopted rehabilitation strategies could be considered as satisfactory. Confinement of damaged region using FRP sheet significantly enhanced the seismic capacity of the connections.

This work is concerned with the damage size estimation by using propagating bending wave signals in a beam. For the accurate estimation, we apply the continuous wavelet transforms to the incident waves and the reflected waves from a small damage in a long cylindrical beam. In particular, we propose to use the ratio of the magnitude of the incident and reflected waves along the ridges in the wavelet-transformed time-frequency plane. This technique is applied to the signals measured by non-contact magnetostrictive sensors. Experimental results indicate that the present method using the magnetostrictive sensor can be quite effective for accurate damage size estimation with simple measurements.

This work is concerned with the damage size estimation by using propagating bonging wave signals in a beam. To this end, we apply the continuous wavelet transforms to the incident waves and the reflected waves from a small damage in a long cylindrical beam. The beam-matter interaction with various coating effects has received continued attention in the high power laser community. Previous works suggest that coatings promote target damage when compared to beaming on uncoated surface. Three types of paint coatings(Acrylic urethane, Silicone alkyd and Stealth blend) and a water coat on metals(Al, Ti and STS) are irradiated with a $CO_2$ laser. Both strain and temperature measurements are provided for assessing the instantaneous response characteristics of each coating on different metals. A selective combination of surface coats with metals has proven effective in either preventing or enhancing damage, both thermal and mechanical, associated with focused beaming on a target.
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is an effective alternative to conventional inspections which are time-consuming and subjective. SHM can detect damage early and reduce maintenance cost and thereby help reduce the likelihood of catastrophic structural events to infrastructure such as bridges. After reviewing the Damage Index Method (DIM), an Iterative Damage Index Method (IDIM) is proposed to improve the accuracy of damage detection. These two damage detection techniques are compared based on damage on two structures, a simply supported beam and a pedestrian bridge. Compared to the traditional damage detection algorithm, the proposed IDIM is shown to be less arbitrary and more accurate.
Early detection of small concrete crack or reinforcement corrosion is necessary for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). Global vibration based methods are advantageous over local methods because of simple equipment installation and cost efficiency. Among vibration based techniques, FRF based methods are preferred over modal based methods. In this study, a new coupled method using frequency response function (FRF) and proper orthogonal modes (POM) is proposed by using the dynamic characteristic of a damaged beam. For the numerical simulation, wave finite element (WFE), coupled with traditional finite element (FE) method is used for effectively incorporating the damage related information and faster computation. As reported in literature, hybrid combination of wave function based wave finite element method and shape function based finite element method can addresses the mid frequency modelling difficulty as it utilises the advantages of both the methods. It also reduces the dynamic matrix dimension. The algorithms are implemented on a three-dimensional reinforced concrete beam. Damage is modelled and studied for two scenarios, i.e., crack in concrete and rebar corrosion. Single and multiple damage locations with different damage length are also considered. The proposed methodology is found to be very sensitive to both single- and multiple- damage while being computationally efficient at the same time. It is observed that the detection of damage due to corrosion is more challenging than that of concrete crack. The similarity index obtained from the damage parameters shows that it can be a very effective indicator for appropriately indicating initiation of damage in concrete structure in the form of spread corrosion or invisible crack.

In this study, an easily recyclable separable glued-laminated timber (GLT)-steel beam was developed, and a structural design method was presented. The GLT and steel were mechanically composited using self-tapping screws. The GLT-steel beam was designed to fail in the compression of GLT. The bending moment and load-carrying capacity of the GLT-steel beam were predicted based on composite beam theory and compared with experimental test data. As a result, the GLT-steel beam exhibited ductile behavior, and compression failure of GLT was observed. The screw connection showed no damage while the steel plate was extended. The load-carrying capacity of GLT after failure was similar to the load resistance predicted by the compressive strength of GLT and the tensile strength of steel. This indicates that the ductile behavior of the GLT-steel beam can be safely designed by the tensile strength (yield) of steel.
Surface photovoltage (SPV) measurements were performed to investigate the optic-electrical properties in the electron beam irradiation semi-insulating GaAs (e-beam irradiation SI-GaAs) and semi-insulating GaAs (SI-GaAs). The signal intensity showed stronge. dependency on the frequency in the SI-GaAs than it did in the e-beam irradiation SI-GaAs. This result indicates that the number of the generated photo-carriers depends on the surface state. Also, the B region of the e-beam irradiation SI-GaAs found a weak signal. This result was explained by the surface and internal damage with e-beam irradiation.
