Distance Estimation Based on RSSI and RBF Neural Network for Location-Based Service (위치 서비스를 위한 RBF 신경회로망과 RSSI 기반의 거리추정)

  • Recently, location information services are gradually expanding due to the development of information and communication technology. RSSI is widely used to extract indoor and outdoor locations. The indoor and outdoor location estimation methods using RSSI are less accurate due to the influence of radio wave paths, interference, and surrounding wireless devices. In order to improve this problem, a distance estimation method that takes into account the wireless propagation environment is necessary. Therefore, in this study, we propose a distance estimation algorithm that takes into account the radio wave environment. The proposed method estimates the distance by learning RSSI input and output considering the RBF neural network and the propagation environment. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, the performance of estimating the location of the receiver within a range of up to 55[m] using a BLE beacon transmitter and receiver was compared with the average filter and Kalman filter. As a result, the distance estimation accuracy of the proposed method was 6.7 times higher than that of the average filter and Kalman filter. As shown in the results of this performance evaluation, if the method of this study is applied to location services, more accurate location estimation will be possible.

  • Visible light communication (VLC) using LED lamps is suitable for implementing an indoor positioning system in an indoor environment where the global positioning system (GPS) signal does not reach. In this paper, we present an indoor positioning system for mobile robots using a VLC beacon and fuzzy rules. This system consists of an autonomous mobile robot, VLC modules, and device application software. Fuzzy rules are applied to plan the global and local paths along which the mobile robot navigates indoors. The VLC transmitter modules are attached to the wall or the ceiling as beacons to transmit their own location information. The variable pulse position modulation (VPPM) algorithm is used to transmit data, which is a new modulation scheme for VLC providing a dimming control mechanism for flicker-free optical communication. The mobile robot has a receiver module to receive the location information while performing its mission in the environment where VLC transmitters are deployed.

A Study on the Obtaining Navigation and Geo-Spatial Information Using WADGPS

  • Recently, a lot of interest focuses on DGPS with which it is possible to obtain 3D geographic information in real time. There are some methods to transmit corrected signals which use ground based systems as beacon, as well as wireless and TV broadcasting media. However, these methods require a large number of stations. Therefore, when the distance from station to user is increased, there is a range limit to the transmission of corrected signals. In order to solve these problems, WADGPS method using Geo-satellite is being investigated. In this study, static and kinematic tests were performed by using Satloc SLX WADGPS and Ashtech receivers. The results showed that SA was affected most among corrected signals of WADGPS; it was followed by ionospheric delay, tropospheric delay and satellite orbit errors. The accuracy of static observation was approx. $\pm$1m on SA-on. This was ten times as accurate as that of absolute observation by common receiver on SA-off. In the SA-off, the accuracy of WADGPS can be improved further. The result of kinematic tests by WADGPS acted in concert with that of standard DGPS by C/A code. It was concluded that the application of W ADGPS could improve considerably navigation and the construction of geographic information.

  • A microwave Navigational Aid system is suggested suitable for fishing boats too small to be equipped with Radar or Radio-Direction-Finder. The system proposed here is similar to that of Talking-Beacon developed in Japan, but the distinctive modification proposed is that an increase of sixteen times in peak transmitting power, thus an accompanying increase of coverage, is achieved with the same mean transmitting power as that of Japan without sacrificing the clearness of azimuth information, by adopting a pulse repetition modulation instead of pulse width modulation as in Japan system. An experimental land station transmitter of transmitting frequency of 9, 370MHz and of peak power of 35kw with a microwave beam of 1 degree in horizontal width and 7 degrees in vertical width rotating once every three minutes, and also an experimental receiver of 20-dB in sensitivity and of an assumed cost of 100 dollars, operated by a 12 volts battery source are made, and the sail test results are reported showing that a bearing infromation of an accuracy of within two degrees can be obtainable every three minutes at a distance of as far as 24 miles from the transmitter if the transmitter is located as high as 100 meters above sea-level.

  • Rapid developments in wireless sensor networks have extended many applications, hence, many studies have developed wireless sensor network positioning systems for indoor environments. Among those systems, the Global Position System (GPS) is unsuitable for indoor environments due to Line-Of-Sight (LOS) limitations, while the wireless sensor network is more suitable, given its advantages of low cost, easy installation, and low energy consumption. Due to the complex settings of indoor environments and the high demands for precision, the implementation of an indoor positioning system is difficult to construct. This study adopts a low-cost positioning method that does not require additional hardware, and uses the received signal strength (RSS) values from the receiver node to estimate the distance between the test objects. Since many objects in indoor environments would attenuate the radio signals and cause errors in estimation distances, knowing the path loss exponent (PLE) in an environment is crucial. However, most studies preset a fixed PLE, and then substitute it into a radio propagation loss model to estimate the distance between the test points; such method would lead to serious errors. To address this problem, this study proposes a Path Loss Exponent Estimation Algorithm, which uses only four beacon nodes to construct a radio propagation loss model for an indoor environment, and is able to provide enhanced positioning precision, accurate positioning services, low cost, and high efficiency.

Improvement of Positioning Performance for GPS Module(KGP9800C) (GPS모듈(KGP9800C)의 측위성능개선)

  • This paper describes the positioning accuracy of GPS moduls (KGP9800C, KiRyung) which need to record the operating position of fishing boat as realtime processing in order to develope auto recording system of fishing boat's operating information, and then it's positioning accuracy for DGPS receiver (MGP-100D, Shin-A) and DGPS beacon (GP-36, Furuno) were analyzed. Futhermore, it was examined the positioning error of the GPS module with processing algorithm to minimize the effect of the signal fluctuations. The results indicate that the positioning error is able to decrease 5m as 2drms, and such improvement of positioning performance for GPS module (KGP9800C) can be provide the basic design data in the development of the auto recording system of fishing boat's operating information.

  • 무선 센서 네트워크에서 실시간 서비스는 중요한 이슈들 중 하나이다. 일반적으로, 기존의 연구는 이를 위해 비컨 (beacon)에 의존한다. 최근, 자원 제약적인 환경의 무선 센서 네트워크에서는 비컨으로 인한 제어 오버헤드 또한 부담이므로, 이를 극복하기 위한 비컨리스 라우팅이 제안되었다. 그러므로, 비컨리스 방안을 기반으로 한 실시간 통신이 활용 된다면 적은 에너지 소모로 환경적 제약에 유리하게 작용할 것이다. 그러나 이를 위해서는 새로운 도전에 직면한다. 전통적인 실시간 통신에서는, 요구 시간 안에 데이터를 전달하기 위해 각 노드들이 단일 홉 지연 시간을 파악하고 있어야 한다. 이 지연 시간은 비컨 메시지를 통한 이웃 노드 정보에 기반하여 파악되며, 이를 바탕으로 송신자가 적합한 다음 중계 노드를 선정한다. 그러나, 수신자 기반의 비컨리스 방안에서는 수신자가 스스로 다음 중계 노드를 결정하는 방식이기 때문에 기존의 송신자를 기준으로 한 지연 시간을 그대로 사용할 수 없다. 또한 비컨리스 라우팅을 위한 경쟁 지연 시간도 단일 홉 지연 시간에 포함되어야 한다. 따라서, 지연 시간 측정 원리가 새롭게 설계되어야 한다. 본 논문에서는 수신자 기반의 실시간 라우팅 방안을 제안한다. 제안 방안에서, 우리는 새로운 지연시간 측정 방법을 제시한다. 송신자로부터 수신자로의 단일 홉 지연 시간은 수신자에 의해 계산되어, 수신자는 실시간 제약 사항을 만족하는지 스스로가 결정할 수 있다. 시뮬레이션 결과를 통해 제안 방안이 비컨없이도 우수한 성능으로 실시간 서비스를 지원할 수 있음을 보여준다.

Smoothed RSSI-Based Distance Estimation Using Deep Neural Network (심층 인공신경망을 활용한 Smoothed RSSI 기반 거리 추정)

  • In this paper, we propose a smoothed received signal strength indicator (RSSI)-based distance estimation using deep neural network (DNN) for accurate distance estimation in an environment where a single receiver is used. The proposed scheme performs a data preprocessing consisting of data splitting, missing value imputation, and smoothing steps to improve distance estimation accuracy, thereby deriving the smoothed RSSI values. The derived smoothed RSSI values are used as input data of the Multi-Input Single-Output (MISO) DNN model, and are finally returned as an estimated distance in the output layer through input layer and hidden layer. To verify the superiority of the proposed scheme, we compared the performance of the proposed scheme with that of the linear regression-based distance estimation scheme. As a result, the proposed scheme showed 29.09% higher distance estimation accuracy than the linear regression-based distance estimation scheme.

A Study on Indoor Position-Tracking System Using RSSI Characteristics of Beacon (비콘의 RSSI 특성을 이용한 실내 위치 추적 시스템에 관한 연구)

  • Indoor location-based services have been developed based on the Internet of Things technologies which measure and analyze users who are moving in their daily lives. These various indoor positioning technologies require separate hardware and have several disadvantages, such as a communication protocol which becomes complicated. Based on the fact that a reduction in signal strength occurs according to the distance due to the physical characteristics of the transmitted signal, RSSI technology that uses the received signal strength of the wireless signal used in this paper measures the strength of the transmitted signal and the intensity of the attenuated received signal and then calculates the distance between a transmitter and a receiver, which requires no separate costs and makes to implement simple measurements. It was applied calculating the value for the average RSSI and the RSSI filtering feedback. Filtering is used to reduce the error of the RSSI values that are measured at long distance.It was confirmed that the RSSI values through the average filtering and the RSSI values measured by setting the coefficient value of the feedback filtering to 0.5 were ranged from -61 dBm to - 52.5 dBm, which shows irregular and high values decrease slightly as much as about -2 dBm to -6 dBm as compared to general measurements.
