  • Acoustic nonlinearity of surface waves is an effective method to evaluate the micro damage on the surface of materials. In this method, the $A_1$ (magnitude of the fundamental wave) and $A_2$ (magnitude of the second-order harmonic wave) are measured for evaluation of acoustic nonlinearity. However, if there is another source of second-order harmonic wave other than the material itself, the linear relationship between $A_1{^2}$ and $A_2$ will not be guaranteed. Therefore, the second-order harmonic generation by another source should be fully suppressed. In this paper, we investigated the initial second-order harmonic generation in narrowband surface waves by multi-line laser beams. The spatial profile of laser beam was considered in the cases of Gaussian and square-like. The temporal profile was assumed to be Gaussian. In case of Gaussian spatial profile, the generation of the initial second-order harmonic wave was inevitable. However, when the spatial profile was square-like, the generation of the initial second-order harmonic wave was able to be fully suppressed at specific duty ratio. These results mean that the multi-line laser beams of square-like profile with a proper duty ratio are useful to evaluate the acoustic nonlinearity of the generated surface waves.

  • The recently proposed control method using a Lyapunov-like function can give global asymptotic stability to a system with mismatched uncertainties if the uncertainties are bounded by a known function and the uncontrolled system is locally and asymptotically stable. In this paper, we modify the method so that it can be applied to a system not satisfying the latter condition without deteriorating qualitative performance. The assured stability in this case is uniform ultimate boundedness which is as useful as global asymptotic stability in the sense that it is global and the bound can be taken arbitrarily small. By the proposed control law we can deal with both matched and mismatched uncertain systems. The above facts conclude that Lyapunov-like control method is superior to any other Lyapunov direct methods in its applicability to uncertain systems.

  • In order to understand the biomaterial like the blood vessel of artery, there is a need to quantify the biomechanical behavior of the vessel. However, theoretical framework to describe and quantify the behaviour of blood vessel was not well established so far. For studying the biomechanical behavior of artery, Rubber-liked material which is similar to passive artery is selected since conventional theoretical interpretation is very limited to understand and predict the behavior of biomaterial. Rubber-like material is assumed to be very similar to artery and has properties of isotropy, homogeneity and is undergoing large deformation. Based on this assumption, stress developed on Rubber-like material is described by strain energy function and strain invariants which are required to understand the nonlinear elastic behavior of biomaterial. The descriptor which would be used for understanding the biomechanical behavior of artery is studied in this work.

  • In this study we use inexact Newton-like methods to find solutions of nonlinear operator equations on Banach spaces with a convergence structure. Our technique involves the introduction of a generalized norm as an operator from a linear space into a par-tially ordered Banach space. In this way the metric properties of the examined problem can be analyzed more precisely. Moreover this approach allows us to derive from the same theorem on the one hand semi-local results of kantorovich-type and on the other hand 2global results based on monotonicity considerations. By imposing very general Lipschitz-like conditions on the operators involved on the other hand by choosing our operators appropriately we can find sharper error bounds on the distances involved than before. Furthermore we show that special cases of our results reduce to the corresponding ones already in the literature. Finally our results are used to solve integral equations that cannot be solved with existing methods.

  • This study provides electron microscopic evidence for the presence of cellulosome-like structures on the cell surface of Ruminococcus albus F-40. Electron microscopy showed that clusters of tightly packed spherical particles were located on the cell surface of R. albus. The protuberant structures present mainly on the bacterial surface and also bound to the cellulose substrate appeared to be the site of cellulosome-like structures. From the evidence presented, we suggest that the structures described here might be a characteristic feature of some ruminal cellulolytic bacteria.

  • Recently, automatic parking assist systems are commercially available in some cars. In order to improve the reliability and the accuracy of parking control, pose uncertainty of a vehicle and some experimental issues should be solved. In this paper, following three schemes are proposed. (1) Odometry calibration scheme for the Car-Like Mobile Robot.(CLMR) (2) Accurate localization using Extended Kalman Filter(EKF) based redundant odometry fusion. (3) Trajectory tracking controller to compensate the tracking error of the CLMR. The proposed schemes are experimentally verified using a miniature Car-Like Mobile Robot. This paper shows that odometry accuracy and trajectory tracking performance can be dramatically improved by using the proposed schemes.

  • Cylinder-like crystals of $Ca^{2+}-ATPase$ provide views parallel to the lamellar plane, from which parameters of lamellar stacking can be directly measured. These parameters were measured using different preparation methods. Assuming that molecular packing is the same, data from lamellar plane could supplement those obtained by tilting large, thin plate-like crystals. However, base on data obtained .by electron microscopy and x-ray powder patterns, the plate-like crystal may have another scheme for stacking the lamellar. The projection map (h, 0, 1) from cylinder-like crystals using cryoelectron microscopy suggest the lamellar spacing can be variable.

  • Smad proteins mediate transforming growth $factor(TGF)-{\beta}$ signaling and play a pivotal role in embryonic development. The estrogen receptor-related receptors(ERRs), which are structurally similar to estrogen receptors, are members of orphan nuclear receptor in the nuclear receptor superfamily and their functions are known to be involved in the formation of extra-embryonic ectoderm. To investigate the involvement of Smad3 and $ERR{\beta}$ like 1 in reproductive activities and embryogenesis in marine invertebrate, we examined gene expression of Smad3 and $ERR{\beta}$ like 1 in Strongylocentrotus nudus during their seasonal changes and embryonic development using real-time polymerase chain reaction. The Smad3 mRNA levels in gonad showed an increasing pattern from February to June 2004 but decreased at August(spawning season) followed by an elevation of the levels at October and December 2004. The mRNA levels of the $ERR{\beta}$ like 1 significantly elevated during the spawning season. During embryonic development, Smad3 mRNA levels at $8{\sim}16$ cell stages were significantly higher than those of other stages, whereas the mRNA of the $ERR{\beta}$ like 1 was significantly high levels at late development stages, i.e., blastular, gastrula and plutei stages. These results suggest that the Smad3 could be involved at least in part in the early cleavage stages and the $ERR{\beta}$ like 1 may play an important role in the spawning season and late developmental stage in the sea urchin.

  • Toll-like receptor (TLR) is responsible for the recognition of foreign protein. Accordingly, TLR is mainly expressed in the immune associated cells. When foreign protein such as silk sericin is considered for the graft, the response of TLR should be considered. TLR is not all or none responsive receptor. TLR can be activated differently by the intensity of the input. Silk sericin is easily fragmented. The protein conformation of silk sericin is different to the degumming method. TLR response to silk sericin may be different to the degumming method. Consequently, objective tailored extraction method should be investigated and developed.

  • This paper aims to investigate a novel affix prevalently and productively used in social media, which is assumed to be borrowed from English into Korean loanblens. The novel affix is composed of a prefix-like and a suffix-like elements, but it seems to be distinguished from other regular combinations of a prefix and a suffix. In analyzing the affix, we attempt to highlight its peculiarities of the affix with empirical data. First, the seemingly borrowed affix does not behave like affixes found in the donor language (English) or the recipient language (Korean) from a linguistic point of view. Both languages have circumfixation rarely available in productive word-formation processes. Second, no regular assimilation rules of Korean apply to the affix boundary, which would otherwise be mandatory to such syllable contact contexts. Last but not least, the affix form has no correspondence to the donor language, and therefore it is claimed to be derived through secretion and taken as a case of pseudo-anglicisms.
