Towards a reduced order model of battery systems: Approximation of the cooling plate

  • In order to analyse the thermal performance of battery systems in electric vehicles complex simulation models with high computational cost are necessary. Using reduced order methods, real-time applicable model can be developed and used for on-board monitoring. In this work a data driven model of the cooling plate as part of the battery system is built and derived from a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. The aim of this paper is to create a meta model of the cooling plate that estimates the temperature at the boundary for different heat flow rates, mass flows and inlet temperatures of the cooling fluid. In order to do so, the cooling plate is simulated in a CFD software (ANSYS Fluent ®). A data driven model is built using the design of experiment (DOE) and various approximation methods in Optimus ®. The model can later be combined with a reduced model of the thermal battery system. The assumption and simplification introduced in this paper enable an accurate representation of the cooling plate with a real-time applicable model.

  • The battery cells in lithium-ion battery pack assembled with high-capacity and high-power pouch cells, are commonly cooled with thin aluminum cooling plates in contact with the cells. For HEV/EV lithium-ion battery systems assembled with high-capacity, high-power pouch cells, the cells are commonly cooled with thin aluminum cooling plates in contact with the cells. Thin aluminum cooling plates are cooled by cold plate with coolant flow paths. In this study, the effect of the battery cooling system design including aluminum cooling plate thickness and various position of cold plate on the cooling performance are investigated by using finite element methods (FEM). Optimal cooling plate and cold plate design are proposed for improving the uniformity in temperature distributions as well as lowering average temperature for the cells with large capacities based on the simulation results.

Effects of Curing Conditions on the Chemical Compositions of Positive Plate for Lead Acid Battery Plates (납축전지 극판의 숙성 조건이 양극판의 화학적 조성에 미치는 영향)

  • Generally, it has been known that positive plate efficiency is the most influential effect on the initial current capacity of lead acid battery. Thus, in this study, we have investigated the curing effect of the positive plate, which is one of the important lead acid battery processes. The curing process of the positive plate is performed either with the separation of each plate with 1mm gap or with no gap of plate. As a result, when there is no interval between each plate, the higher temperature current happened than expected, resulting in the changes in the initial current efficiency of the lead acid battery. The chemical composition and crystal structure of a material coated on the positive plate were identified with XRD and SEM. It was resulted that were only there not a lot of 4BS (tetrabasic-lead sulfate, $4PbO{\cdot}PbSO_4)$ on the plate in case of curing of plates without interval, but a large quantity of $Pb_3O_4$ also formed on the surface. On the other hand, it was observed that 3BS (tribasic-lead sulface, $3PbO{\cdot}PbSO_4{\cdot}H_2O)$ was the main product on the plate in case of typical curing process with some interval. From the initial current capacity test, the positive plate having 3BS was approximately 40% higher in initial current capacity than that having 4BS. It was concluded that 4BS and $Pb_3O_4$ on the plate surface were harmful to the initial current capacity of lead acid battery.

  • In this paper, we developed the inspection system of electric vehicle battery plate using image processing. Four cameras are used for acquiring the principal parts of the plate, and several steps of image processing for extracting significant dimensions of the plate such as widths and lengths. As a preceding step, calibration of four cameras is carried for compensating distorted images using dot-arrayed sheet. Coordinate systems for four cameras are defined where one coordinate system is assigned to the reference coordinate system to which the others are relatively described. Line information of the edge in the windowed image is extracted using elaborate edge-detection algorithm, and finally the intersection points between lines are extracted to calculate widths and lengths of the plate from which the error status of the battery plate is decided.

Performance Characteristics of Lead Acid Battery with the Contents of Sodium Perborate Tetrahydrate (SPT) in Positive Plate Active Material (과붕산나트륨 양극 활물질 첨가에 따른 차량용 납산배터리 성능 특성)

  • The performance characteristics of a lead acid battery are investigated with the content of Sodium Perborate Tetrahydrate (SPT, NaBO3·4H2O) in a positive plate active material. SPT, which reacts with water to form hydrogen peroxide, is applied as an additive in the positive plate active material to increase adhesion between the substrate (positive plate) and the active material; this phenomenon is caused by a chemical reaction on the surface of substrate. A positive plate with the increasing content of SPT is prepared to compare its properties. It is confirmed that the oxide layer increases at the interface between the substrate and the active material with increasing content of SPT; this is proven to be an oxide layer through EDS analysis. Battery performance is confirmed: when SPT content is 2.0 wt%, the charging acceptance and high rate discharge properties are improved. In addition, the lifetime performance according to the Standard of Battery Association of Japan (SBA) S0101 test is improved with increasing content of SPT.

  • The improvement in the battery performance and life using a battery thermal management system directly affects the improvement in the performance, life, and energy efficiency of electric vehicles. Therefore, this study numerically analyzed the heat exchange processes between the coolant inside the cooling plate channel and the heat generated by the battery. The cooling performance was analyzed based on the average temperature, temperature uniformity, and the maximum and minimum temperature differences of the battery. A performance difference existed depending on the coolant inlet temperature but showed the same tendency of cooling performance according to the shape of each plate's channel. Type 1 showed the best results in terms of battery temperature uniformity, which is the most important measure of battery performance; Type 2 showed the best results in terms of the average temperature of the battery; and Type 3 showed the best results in terms of the maximum and minimum temperature differences of the battery compared with that of the other cooling plates.

  • Lead-acid battery is used widely as a power source in the automobile, industrial machines, folk lifts U.P.S etc. But this battery has man\ulcorner disadvantages such as heavy low energy density, environment problem etc. In this paper, we have studied the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of lead-acid battery positive plates with regard to the method of curing. It has been observed that curing conditions strongly influence electrode composition and electrchemical performance.

A Study on Selective Composite Patch for Light Weight and Quality Improvement of Battery Module (배터리 모듈의 경량화 및 품질 향상을 위한 선택적 복합재료 패치에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, in order to improve the quality issue and component characteristics of the battery module, which is one of the major parts of the electric vehicle. The structure is reinforced by using the composite material and the mechanism structure optimization of Hybrid concept which can overcome the disadvantages of single material was performed and the performance was compared. For this purpose, figure out the main design variables of composite materials according to Classical Laminated Plate Theory (CLPT) and the algorithm for predicting composite material properties have been studied. Based on the mechanical properties of the designed composite materials, finite element analysis (FEM) and the performance of the battery module was verified. Consequently, according to the verification result, Hybrid Battery Module reinforced with Selective Composite Patch can reduce the weight by 30% and reduce the product thickness by 32.5% compared with the existing Al battery module and proved the merit of Hybrid structure such as maintaining impact performance.

Effect of Na2CO3 contents on synthesis of plate-like NaNbO3 particles for templated grain growth

  • x mol% (x = 0 ~ 20) Na2CO3 excess Bi2.5Na3.5Nb5O18 (BNN) particles were synthesized using molten salt as a flux. The secondary phases were observed at stoichiometric ratio of BNN precursors and their intensity decreased with increasing Na contents. The results of SEM images showed that all particles existed in a platelet shape and the particle increased in size with higher increasing Na contents. Plate-like NaNbO3 particles were developed using BNN precursor obtained by a topochemical microcrystal conversion. XRD analysis of NaNbO3 particles showed that a single perovskite phase and the intensity of (h00) peaks increased with increasing Na contents in BNN precursor. SEM images showed that the size of plate-like NaNbO3 was significantly changed by controlling Na contents in BNN precursors.

  • This study has been focused on the development of shear forming process of grid for lead-acid battery. The grid plays an important role in the flow of electricity because the grid is a skeleton of the pasted plate. Therefore, it must be of the highest quality to prevent plate failures and then, battery failure, and ensure the best battery performance possible. The finite element analysis of the shear forming process is carried out and the result is compared with the experimental data. The influence of the numerical parameters such as clearance, velocity of punch and critical damage value on the simulation results turns out to be very considerable.
