In this study, we tested the absorption of $CO_2$ in combustion gas into an alkaline wastewater to simultaneously control $CO_2$ and wastewater. During the experiment, we investigated the effects of operating parameters on neutralization characteristics of the wastewater by using $CO_2$ in a bench-scale semi-batch jet loop reactor (0.1 m diameter and 1.0 m in height). The operating parameters investigated in the study are gas flow rate of 1.0-2.0 L/min, liquid recirculation flow rate of 4-32 L/min, and liquid temperature of $20-25^{\circ}C$. It was shown that the initial pH of wastewater rapidly decreased with increased gas flow rate for a given liquid recirculation flow rate. This was due to the increase in the gas holdup and the interfacial area at higher gas flow rate in the reactor. At constant gas flow rate, the time required to neutralize the wastewater initial pH of 10.1 decreased with liquid recirculation flow rate ($Q_L$), reached a minimum value in the range of $Q_L$ = 16-24 L/min, and then increased with further increase in $Q_L$. Further, the time required to neutralize the wastewater was shortened at higher temperatures.

Plant disease is one of the issues that can create losses in the production and economy of the agricultural sector. Early detection of this disease for finding solutions and treatments is still a challenge in the sustainable agriculture field. Currently, image processing techniques and machine learning methods have been applied to detect plant diseases successfully. However, the effectiveness of these methods still needs to be improved, especially in multiclass plant diseases classification. In this paper, a convolutional neural network with a batch normalization-based deep learning approach for classifying plant diseases is used to develop an automatic diagnostic assistance system for leaf diseases. The significance of using deep learning technology is to make the system be end-to-end, automatic, accurate, less expensive, and more convenient to detect plant diseases from their leaves. For evaluating the proposed model, an experiment is conducted on a public dataset contains 20654 images with 15 plant diseases. The experimental validation results on 20% of the dataset showed that the model is able to classify the 15 plant diseases labels with 96.4% testing accuracy and 0.168 testing loss. These results confirmed the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed model for the plant disease detection task.
As the amount of livestock wastewater increases, ammonia contamination in surface water and groundwater is also increasing, and its treatment is urgently needed. In this study, indigenous soil bacteria was utilized for ammonia removal in artificial wastewater and associated removal mechanisms and efficiencies were evaluated. Two batch reactors were configurated to contain natural soil and artificial wastewater at 1:10 mass ratio, and incubated for 84 and 168 hours, respectively. The results showed that ammonia was completely removed within 48 and 72 hours in the first and second reactors, respectively. There were no significant changes in ammonia concentrations in the control groups without soil. Nitrate was formed in the reactors, indicating that the main removal mechanism of ammonia was nitrification by nitrifying bacteria. Nitrate was further converted to nitrogen gas by denitrification in the anaerobic environment, which was caused by consumption of oxygen during the nitrification process.
The solvent extraction method was applied on the wastewater produced during malonate(malonic acid esters) process to recover cobalt. DEHPA and PC88A were used as organic solvent From separation funnel experiment(batch experiment), the effects of vari- ous parameters (pH, cobalt concentration, reaction rate, and stripping temperature) on solvent extraction were examined and these data were used to derive equilibrium curve. A mixer-settler experiment (continuous experiment) of bench scale was also carried out for the plant construction and a Mccabe-Thiele diagram was obtained. The results of these experiments indicate that cobalt is recoverable above 99 oyo and that its purity as cobalt sulfate Is higher than 99.9 wt%.
A batch experiment was carried out to investigate a variation of Sr concentration and $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ ratio in the solution by water-rock interaction. The experiments were conducted at room temperature using two kinds of granites (biotite granite and garnet-bearing granite), de-ionized water. surface water. Water/rock ratio was 1:1. For comparison, we also performed another experiment under water/rock condition of 10:1. Then, the concentration of the cations and anions in the solutions showed severe variation during water/rock interaction. However, after sometime, the $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ ratio of the solution moved to the $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ ratio of the rocks and showed relatively constant value. This suggests that the $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ ratio between water and rock becomes to be stable faster than the elemental equilibration of the element in the solution, and is not affected by interaction condition. Therefore, $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ ratio of the groundwater may be useful in calculating the mixing ratio between different aquifer.
The juice extract of Rehmannia glutinosa Liboschitz was used to improve the productivity of ethanol in alcohol fermentation process using a 5 L fermentor under batch and fed-batch cultivations. For batch cultivation, both cell density and ethanol production were increased as the extract of R. glutinosa was increased, showing 11.8 (g/L) of maximum cell density and 0.092 (% /hr) of maximum alcohol productivity in adding 30% (v/v) of the extract. However, in adding more than 40% of the extract both cell growth and ethanol production were dropped. The cell growth was severely inhibited in 50% addition. It was found that fed-batch cultivation in adding 30% of the extract of R. glutinosa was an effective process than batch cultivation, yielding up to 30% cell growth and ethanol production. This ethanol productivity was also 30-40% higher than that obtained from a conventional alcohol fermentation. It can tell that dried R. glutinosa Liboschitz is to be used for both enhancing the yield of alcohol fermentation and utilizing biologically active substances possibly transported from R. glutinosa Liboschitz into fermented broth.
Batch culture system and continuous culture system were used to investigate the removal of disperse dye using several white rot fungi. White rot fungi used in the study were Coriolus hirsutus IFO 4917, Lenzites betulina IFO 6266, Coriolus versicolor IFO 30340 and Phanerochaete chrysosporium IFO 31249. The results of the batch culture experiment showed that white rot fungi used in this study had excellent dye removal abilities. Phanerochaete chrysosporium IFO 31249 was especially effective on the removal of disperse dyes. And continuous treatment of disperse red-60 was studied under bioreactor with vertical matrix using Phanerochaete chrysosporium IFO 31249. The removal efficiency of disperse red-60 were more than 95% in 0.20 ${\sim} 1.50 $hr^{-1}$ dilution rate and 90% in $1.83h^{-1}$ dilution rate.
In this experiment, we tested various nitrogen sources and then culture condition was optimized for industrial applications. The batch culture of Candida magnoliae SR101 grown in a defined medium supplemented with light steep water (LSW) as a sole nitrogen source showed a relatively high yield of erythritol production (53%), which was slightly higher than that using yeast extract as a nitrogen source, while the productivity and cell mass were maintained at similar levels. For the optimization of culture condition, the batch culture was performed. When the concentration of LSW was 65 mL/L in the defined medium containing 250 g/L of glucose, the concentration, yield and productivity of erythritol were 110 g/L, 44%, and 0.66 g/L-hr, respectively. The high yield and comparable productivity obtained with a cheap nitrogen source could be expected as a basis for the mass production of erythritol in the industrial scale.
Batch culture of mutant derived from Pichia ciferrii ATCC 14091 was investigated for producing the intracellular tetraacetylphytosphingosine (TAPS). Composite experimental design was used to optimize the composition of the culture medium for maximizing the productivity of TAPS. In this experiment, various culture parameters were investigated that were the effects of temperature, the initial culture pH, the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, the concentration of trace elements, and the concentration of cofactors. The optimal temperature for cell growth and TAPS synthesis appeared to be %25^{\circ}C$. An initial pH value of 7.5 gave the best results. Under the best condition, the maximum TAPS concentration indicated 7.2 g/L and its productivity was 0.06 g/L-hr in a 2.5 L jar
Application of pervaporative extraction of ethanol to simultaneous saccharification and fermentation(SSF) of cellulose was investigated. From batch experiments, optimum cellulose substrate and enzyme loadings were found to be 10% and 15 IFPU/g cellulose, respectively. The cellulose conversion was lowered in fed-batch system due to the ethanol accumulation. The activity of the yeast Saccharomyces uvarum used in this study was significantly reduced at ethanol concentrations above around 40 g/L. From pervaporation experiments using PDMS membrane, ethanol was efficiently separated at 38$^\circ C$ and 10 mmHg of a down stream pressure. The pervaporation unit with 240 cm$^2$ of surface area was combined into the SSF reactor. The continuous removal of ethanol by pervaporation during SSF resulted in an improved cellulose conversion. Within the scope of this experiment, ethanol yields in the pervaporative SSF and simple SSF were 68.3% and 56.6%, respectively. The permeate flux for SSF broth pervaporation was about one-half that for the pervaporation of aqueous ethanol solution. Accordingly, the development of a membrane with higher ethanol selectivity and flux will increase the feasibility of this technology.
