Performance Analysis for MPEG-4 Video Codec Based on On-Chip Network

  • In this paper, we present a performance analysis for an MPEG-4 video codec based on the on-chip network communication architecture. The existing on-chip buses of system-on-a-chip (SoC) have some limitation on data traffic bandwidth since a large number of silicon IPs share the bus. An on-chip network is introduced to solve the problem of on-chip buses, in which the concept of a computer network is applied to the communication architecture of SoC. We compared the performance of the MPEG-4 video codec based on the on-chip network and Advanced Micro-controller Bus Architecture (AMBA) on-chip bus. Experimental results show that the performance of the MPEG-4 video codec based on the on-chip network is improved over 50% compared to the design based on a multi-layer AMBA bus.

대학생의 부모애착과 대학생활적응 간의 관계에서 기본심리 욕구만족의 매개효과 (The Mediating Effect of the satisfaction of Basic Psychological Needs on the Relationship between Undergraduate Students' Parental Attachment and College Life Adjustment)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effect of the satisfaction of basic psychological needs on the relationship between college students' parental attachment and college life adjustment. Participants comprised 235 college students enrolled in five universities located in the Gwangju and Jeonnam areas. To assess the mediating effects, correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were performed using SPSS 25.0. The results were as follows: first, significant positive correlations were observed between parental attachment, satisfaction of basic psychological needs, and college life adjustment; second, satisfaction of basic psychological needs partially mediated the relationship between parental attachment and college life adjustment. This indicates that the satisfaction of basic psychological needs - such as autonomy, competence, and relatedness - is extremely important in enabling college students to adjust to college life.

Speed Improvement of an FTICR Mass Spectra Analysis Program by Simple Modifications

  • Two simple algorithm modifications are made to the THRASH data retrieval program with the aim of improving analysis speed for complex Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) mass spectra. Instead of calculating the least-squares fit for every charge state in the backup charge state determination algorithm, only some charge states are pre-selected based on the plausibility values obtained from the FT/Patterson analysis. Second, a modification is made to skip figure-of-merit (FOM) calculations in the central m/z region between two neighboring peaks in isotopic cluster distributions, in which signal intensities are negligible. These combined modifications result in a significant improvement in the analysis speed, which reduces analysis time as much as 50% for ubiquitin (8.6 kDa, 76 amino acids) FTICR MS and MS/MS spectra at the reliability (RL) value = 0.90 and five pre-selected charge states with minimal decreases in data analysis quality (Table 3).

Proteomic analyses reveal that ginsenoside Rg3(S) partially reverses cellular senescence in human dermal fibroblasts by inducing peroxiredoxin

  • Background: The cellular senescence of primary cultured cells is an irreversible process characterized by growth arrest. Restoration of senescence by ginsenosides has not been explored so far. Rg3(S) treatment markedly decreased senescence-associated β-galactosidase activity and intracellular reactive oxygen species levels in senescent human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). However, the underlying mechanism of this effect of Rg3(S) on the senescent HDFs remains unknown. Methods: We performed a label-free quantitative proteomics to identify the altered proteins in Rg3(S)-treated senescent HDFs. Upregulated proteins induced by Rg3(S) were validated by real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunoblot analyses. Results: Finally, 157 human proteins were identified, and variable peroxiredoxin (PRDX) isotypes were highly implicated by network analyses. Among them, the mitochondrial PRDX3 was transcriptionally and translationally increased in response to Rg3(S) treatment in senescent HDFs in a time-dependent manner. Conclusion: Our proteomic approach provides insights into the partial reversing effect of Rg3 on senescent HDFs through induction of antioxidant enzymes, particularly PRDX3.

Human Proteome Data Analysis Protocol Obtained via the Bacterial Proteome Analysis

  • In the multidimensional protein identification technology of high-throughput proteomics, we use one-dimensional gel electrophoresis and after the separation by two-dimensional liquid chromatography, the sample is analyzed by tandem mass spectrometry. In this study, we have analyzed the Pseudomonas Putida KT2440 protein. From the protein identification, the protein database was combined with its reversed sequence database. From the peptide selection whose error rate is less than 1%, the SEQUEST database search for the tandem mass spectral data identified 2,045 proteins. For each protein, we compared the molecular weight calibrated from 1D-gel band position with the theoretical molecular weight computed from the amino acid sequence, by defining a variable MW$_{corr}$ Since the bacterial proteome is simpler than human proteome considering the complexity and modifications, the proteome analysis result for the Pseudomonas Putida KT2440 could suggest a guideline to build the protocol to analyze human proteome data.

  • 기본마찰각은 전단강도를 추정할 수 있는 매개변수로, 사면의 안정성 해석 등에 이용되는 설계정수이다. 이러한 기본마찰각은 암석 표면의 거칠기 외에도 광물조성에 따라 다른 결과값을 갖는다. 이에 본 연구에서는 기본마찰각과 표면 광물조성이 갖는 상관성에 대해 살펴보았다. 기본마찰각의 측정은 기존 기울기 시험을 수정, 보완하여 수행하였으며 통계적인 기법으로 신뢰성을 확보하였다. 또한 시료의 사진 분석을 통하여 광물의 조성을 확인하였으며, 박편사진을 이용한 검증을 수행하였다.

Is Axillary Dissection Necessary for Breast Cancer in Old Women? A Meta-analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials

  • Background: We performed this meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness and safety of axillary dissection in old women. Methods: The Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database were searched and all randomized controlled trials of axillary dissection in old women (at least 60 years old) were considered. Meta-analyses were completed using RevMan5.1. Results: Three eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) including 5,337 patients were considered. There was weak evidence in favour of axillary dissection (AD) in old women. The meta-analysis showed that the overall survival (OS) after 1, 3, 5 and 7 years and the disease free survival (DFS) after 1, 3 and 5 year were not statistically significantly different between AD and no AD groups. However, there was a difference in the 7 year DFS. Conclusions: Axillary dissection did not provide survival benefit to the old women with breast cancer analysed. Therefore, axillary dissection is not well-indicated in old women with breast cancer.

Proteomics Data Analysis using Representative Database

  • In the proteomics research using mass spectrometry, the protein database search gives the protein information from the peptide sequences that show the best match with the tandem mass spectra. The protein sequence database has been a powerful knowledgebase for this protein identification. However, as we accumulate the protein sequence information in the database, the database size gets to be huge. Now it becomes hard to consider all the protein sequences in the database search because it consumes much computing time. For the high-throughput analysis of the proteome, usually we have used the non-redundant refined database such as IPI human database of European Bioinformatics Institute. While the non-redundant database can supply the search result in high speed, it misses the variation of the protein sequences. In this study, we have concerned the proteomics data in the point of protein similarities and used the network analysis tool to build a new analysis method. This method will be able to save the computing time for the database search and keep the sequence variation to catch the modified peptides.

AFLP 분석을 통한 포공영 기원식물 민들레의 유전 다양성 분석 (Genetic Diversity of the Original Plant for Taraxaci Herba, Taraxacum spp. by the Analysis of AFLP)

  • Collected germplasms of five representative dandelion species (Taraxacum ohwianum, T. platycarpum, T. platypecidum, T. officinale, and T. coreanum) were 104 lines from different habitates in Korea and China. Their genetic diversity was analyzed by genomic fingerprinting method using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). AFLP results of 6 primer combinations were revealed 1,176 total DNA fragments and 523 polymorphic bands with a 44.4% ratio of polymorphism. On the basis of similarity coefficient analysis by unweight pair group method with arithmetic averages (UPGMA), 104 dandelion germplasm lines were ranged from 0.64 to 0.99 and clustered distinct five group depending on the species. Furthermore, a principal coordinate analysis (PCA) by the application of multi-variate analysis indicated significantly greater differences among species than geographical origins.
