  • The Imgye area, in the NE Taebaegsan Region, consists of Precambrian granites and schist complex at the base and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks and amphibolite at cover. The granites in the area were previously thought to be Paleozoic in age, but recent geochronological data yields isotopic age ranging from $1837{\pm}82Ma$ to $2108{\pm}82Ma$ by Rb-Sr whole rock method. Therefore, basement-cover relations in the area should be reexamined. During the study, mylonite zone recognized along the contact boundary between Precambrian granites and Cambrian Jangsan Quartzite Formation. Mylonite zone has 150 - 250 m in width. Mylonitic rocks can divide into two groups; quartz mylonite derived from Jangsan Formation and mylonitic granites from Precambrian granites. Intensity of mylonitic foliation decreased toward the north. Amphibolite occurs as an intrusive sills within mylonite zone. Mineral fabrics and small scale shear zones are commonly seen in amphibolite. It indicates that intrusive age of amphibolite is synchronous to the formation of mylonite zone. Mylonite zone was reactivated as ductile thrust faults and forms the hinterland dipping imbricate zone during the Cretaceous Bulkuksa Orogeny. The near parallelism of mineral stretching lineation and long axis of strain ellipes indicates that the area is affected by a homogeneous pure shear flattening together with the variable components of simple shear.

  • Recently, the construction of the urban area has been rapidly increasing, and the excavation work of the ground has been frequently performed at the upper part of the existing underground structures. Especially, when the structure is constructed after the excavation of the ground, the loading and unloading process in the ground under the excavation basement can affect the existing underground structures. Therefore, in order to maintain the stability of the existing underground structure due to the excavation of the ground, it is necessary to accurately grasp the influence of the excavation and the structure load in the adjoining part. In this study, the effect of the excavation of the ground and the new structure load on the existing tunnel was experimentally implemented and the influence of the adjacent construction on the existing tunnel was investigated. For this purpose a large testing model with 1/5 scale of the actual size was manufactured. The influence of ground excavation, width of the load due to new structure, and distance between centers of tunnel and of excavation on the existing tunnel was investigated. In this study, it was confirmed that the influence on the existing tunnel gets larger, as the excavation depth get deeper. At the same distance, it was confirmed that the tunnel displacement increased up to three times according to the increase of the building load width. That is, the load width influences the existing tunnel larger than the excavation depth. As the impact of the distance between centers of tunnel and of excavation, it was confirmed that tunnel crown displacement decreased by 48%. The result showed that a tunnel is located in the range of 1D (D: tunnel diameter) from the center of excavation, the effect of excavation is the largest.

  • Various interpretations on the boundary between the $Okch{\check{o}}n$ system and the Great Limestone series of the $Chos{\check{o}}n$ system, and on the geologic structure and stratigraphy of the $Okch{\check{o}}n$ system have been yielded by the previous studies, and they are still in hot debate. The present work has mainly studied on the boundary between the $Okch{\check{o}}n$ and $Chos{\check{o}}n$ systems in the south of $Jech{\check{o}}n$, and the geology in its vicinity to clarify the previous misinterpretations if any on the geologic structure and in trun stratigraphy of the area concerned. The boundary between the $Okch{\check{o}}n$ system and the Great Limestone series of the $Chos{\check{o}}n$ system has been thought to be (1) gradational relation which means two systems are the same formation, (2) unconformable relation in which the $Okch{\check{o}}n$ system overlies the $Chos{\check{o}}n$ system, (3) unconformable relation in which the $Chos{\check{o}}n$ system overlies the Okchon system indicating that the age of the $Okch{\check{o}}n$ system is Precambrian, and (4) fault contact in which the $Okch{\check{o}}n$ system of Precambrian age comes in contact with the $Chos{\check{o}}n$ system of Cambro-Ordovician age. The present study clearly found that the relationship between the two systems is a fault zone contact. Shear zone of a width of 300 to 400m is developed, and andesitic volcanics and basic dikes are intruded along the fault zone. This fault contact is exactly the north extension of the Bonghwajae fault, which was denominated long time ago by two of the present authors. The eastern side of the fault has been uplifted so that the $S{\check{o}}changri$ formation of the $Okch{\check{o}}n$ system cropped out in the zone of the Great Limestone series. All the previous workers thought that the $S{\check{o}}changri$ formation rests on the Great Limestone series, but the present study found an overthrust having a strike of $N8^{\circ}E$ and dip of $30^{\circ}NW$ between them, and the $S{\check{o}}changri$ formation has thrusted over the Great Limestone series at the central part of the study area. In the southern and northern parts of this uplifted $S{\check{o}}changri$ formation, the Great Limestone series rests unconformably on it. In the eastern part of the study area where the Mt. Dangdu is located and the previous workers thought that the $S{\check{o}}changri$ formation rests on the Great Limestone series, Precambrian basement rock whose age is older than 1720+50 m.y. crops out in the northern part of the east-west trending high angle fault, and the Great Limestone series rests unconformably on the basement.

  • This study analyzed the working conditions and problems of screen fire shutters in the Goyang Bus Terminal fire based on the fire investigation results. At that time, screen fire shutters in the 1st basement, which was under construction, did not work because the power was shut off. Four screen fire shutters in the 1st and 3rd floor did not work despite the power not being shut off. The following problems related to a screen fire shutter were found: shutting off the power to screen fire shutters for the fire compartment on each floor, even when the fire compartments were changed in each area; installing an integral type screen fire shutter without any regulations, installing a two-stage screen fire shutter in a place not related to obstacles during evacuation; stopping the function of the screen fire shutters for a fire compartment on each floor after a combustible sandwich panel was comparted; installing a screen fire shutter over 10 meters in width, in which its performance was not verified; and no safety control standards for reinstalling or maintaining a screen fire shutter.

  • Depositional processes of fine-grained sediments were investigated on the basis of sediment transport vector analysis and identification of benthic foraminiferal assemblages in Yoja Bay, southern coast of Korea. The bay is a semi-enclosed embayment where extensive mud flats occur with a width up to about 4 km. Most surface sediments are poorly sorted (sorting values: 1.9-3.0 ${\phi}$) mud and silt (mean grain size: 6.0-8.7 ${\phi}$), except for the tidal inlets with basement rocks locally exposed. Grain-size distribution shows a fining tendency toward the basin center near the Yoja Island, implying a possible existence of turbidity maximum and relatively rapid settling of fine-grained sediments. The agglutinated foraminiferal taxa are dominant in the inner bay and decrease in abundance toward the mouth of the bay. Species diversities are higher in the outer bay, due to mixing of the offshore faunas with those of the bay. Four groups of benthic foraminiferal assemblages, identified by cluster analysis, represent the bay. Biofacies I and ll with relatively lower diversities are dominated by Ammobaculites exiguus and Ammonia beccarii, suggestive of influx of fresh water. In contrast, biofacies III and IV with relatively higher diversities include increased amounts of calcareous genus Elphidium and Quinquelocuzina, accounting for strong influence of sea water from the offshore. The fluvial discharge in summer floods appears to develop a bay-wide, clockwise lateral circulation in Yoja Bay, a typical of well-mixed estuaries. Accordingly, the foraminiferal assemblages of the surface sediments well show a sign of this circulation. The dominant inflow of the offshore water into the western part of the bay has resulted in more extensive muddy tidal flats compared to the eastern narrower counterpart.

  • Aeromagnetic and gravity data were analyzed to delineate the subsurface structure of the Yeongdong basin and its related fault movement in the Okcheon fold belt. The aeromagnetic data of the total intensity (KIGAM, 1983) were reduced to the pole and three dimensional inverse modeling, which considers topography of the survey area in the modeling process, were carried out. The apparent susceptibility map obtained by three dimensional magnetic inversion, as well as the observed aeromagnetic anomaly itself, show clearly the gross structural trend of the Yeongdong basin in the direction on between $N30^{\circ}E$ and $N45^{\circ}E$. Gravity survey was carried out along the profile, of which the length is about 18.2 km across the basin. Maximum relative Bouguer anomaly is about 7 mgals. Both forward and inverse modeling were also carried out for gravity analysis. The magnetic and gravity results show that the Yeongdong basin is developed by the force which had created the NE-SW trending the magnetic anomalies. The susceptibility contrast around Yeongdong fault is apparent, and the southeastern boundary of the basin is clearly defined. The basement depth of the basin appears to be about 1.1 km beneath the sea level, and the width of the basin is estimated to be 7 km based on the simultaneous analysis of gravity and magnetic profiles. There exists an unconformity between the sedimentary rocks and the gneiss at the southeastern boundary, which is the Yeongdong fault, and granodiorite is intruded at the northwestern boundary of the basin. Our results of gravity and magnetic data analysis support that the Yeongdong basin is a pull-apart basin formed by the left-stepping sinistral strike-slip fault, which formed the Okcheon fold belt.

  • This research was undertaken to prove the relationship between street mall activation and architectural plan design. The research methodology was established based on the analysis of data of two existing street malls in Korea (Western Dome & LaFesta) and theoretical studies of outdoor space design. The findings from this study are the following: First, building blocks with segments in every 50m or so are ideal for detailed communication between visitors and building contents. Second, the ratio of width of main corridor and building height should be less than 1 to provide intimate feel and keep visitors' attention concentrated in the facility. Third, store unit should have more storefronts to be exposed more to passers-by and lead more pedestrian traffic. Fourth, shape of store unit would rather be wide and shallow, instead of narrow and deep, to have more exposure to the central corridor. Fifth, the building block of the busiest(most expensive) area that is usually at the main entrance area of street mall should be flexible to fit more smaller units to maximize the profitability. Sixth, the main entrance of store should face the main pedestrian corridor to induce the influx of visitors. Lastly seventh, anchor tenant that has strong name recognition is usually located on basement or higher level to induce pedestrian traffic into the mall, key tenants that are strong and familiar brand names should be located at the corner of building block with spacing to attract visitors, provide even distribution of traffic, and support wayfinding, and local tenant should be located at small units along the central corridor or remainder spaces occurred from building core layout.

  • Since the detection of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) is increasing due to regular cervical cancer screening, there is a high demand for simpler tools to diagnose and treat CIN in the clinic. In this study, we proposed an electric property of cervical tissue to verify treatment using a laser. At first, we observed the depth and width of ablated cervical tissues for 29 samples according to four different pulse energy of the fractional CO2 laser to find enough pulse energy to reach the basement layer for initiated CIN. And then, the relative frequency differences in impedance spectrum before and after laser irradiation for ten non-CIN samples were collected using bioimpedance spectroscopy with a multi-electrode probe. As a result, the laser ablated the cervical tissues with a depth of more than 300 ㎛ at 100 mJ pulse energy. Also, we confirmed that the relative changes of electrical property for cervical tissue increased as the pulse energy of laser output increased, and the variation between samples decreased. Since the relative change in electrical properties of cervical tissue can be easily and quickly measured, the proposed technique paves the way for further verification and follow-up study of laser treatment for CIN.

  • The geologic structure of Gongju Basin, which is a Cretaceous sedimentary basin located on the boundary of Gyeonggi Massif and Ogcheon Belt, is modeled by using gravity data and interpreted in relation with basin forming tectonism. The electrical survey with dipole-dipole array was also conducted to uncover the development of fractures in the two fault zones which form the boundaries of the basin. In the process of gravity data reduction, the terrain correction was performed by using the conic prism model, which showed better results specially for topography having a steep slope. The gravity model of the geologic structure of Gongju basin is obtained by forward modeling based on the surface geology and density inversion. It reveals that the width of the basin at its central part is about $4{\cal}km$ and about $2.5{\cal}km$ at the southern part. The depth of crystalline basement beneath sedimentary rocks of the basin is about $700{\~}400{\cal}m$ below the sea level and it is thinner in the center than in margin. The fault of the southeastern boundary appears more clearly than that of the northwestern boundary, and its fracture zone may extended to the depth of more than $1{\cal}km$. Therefore, it is thought that the tectonic movement along the fault in the southeastern boundary was much stronger. These results coincide with the appearance of broad low resistivity anomaly at the southeastern boundary of the basin in the resistivity section. The fracture zones having low density are also recognized inside the basin from the gravity model. The swelling feature of basement and the fractures in sedimentary rocks of the basin suggest that the compressional tectonic stress had also involved after the deposition of the Cretaceous sediments.

  • The autogenous free gingival graft is the most predictable procedure currently used to increase the width of the attached gingiva in periodontics. But the major disadvantage of the procedure is to create the multiple surgical wounds at both a donor site and a recipient site. The other problem is the limited amount of available graft material in oral cavity. Therefore, recent researches have been focused to develop the biomaterial to substitute the autogenous gingival tissue. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the histologic healing after grafting of bilayer artificial dermis, compared to the free gingival graft. Four non-smoking subjects (mean age, 32.5 years) in systemically healthy state and good oral hygiene were selected according to their particular needs for correction of mucogingival problems as suggested by Nabers(1966). The recipient sites were prepared through the procedure for the free gingival graft and were grouped according to the graft materials: Experimental group(n=5) - bilayer artifcia1 dermis ($Terudermis^{(R)}$; Terumo Co. Japan) and Control group(n=6) - free gingival graft with autogenous palatal mucosa. Biopsies were harvested at 1,2,3 and 6 weeks postsurgery to evaluate histologically. At the third week in the experimental group and at the second week of in the control group, the grafts has been clinically stabilized on the recipient bed and the graft border has been blended into the surrounding tissue. In the experimental group after 1 week of grafting, the epithelial migration from the adjacent tissue to graft material was seen and after 3 weeks of grafting, the : nflmmation decreased, collagen layer of the artificial dermis was lost and the basement membrane of epithelium was formed. After 6 weeks of grafting, both groups demonstrated orthokeratinized epithelium and increased thickness of epithelial tissue and the rete peg formation, similar to the adjacent tissue, Histologic evaluation revealed a biologic acceptance and incorporation of the collagen layers of the graft tissue to the host tissue, without foreign body reaction. In conclusion, a bilayer artificial dermis is essentially similar to autogeneous free gingival graft in the correction of mucogingival problems, and has the advantages of decreased patient morbidity (no donor site) and availability of abundant amounts of graft material when needed.
