  • Overlays is a treatment of the surface and near-surface regions of a material to allow the surface to perform functions that are distinct from those frictions demanded far the bulk of the material. Welding, thermal spray, quenching, carburizing and nitration have been used as the surface treatment. Especially, weld overlay is a relatively thick layer of filler metal applied to a carbon or low-alloy steel base metal for the purpose of providing a wear resistant surface. In this study, weld overlay was performed by MAG welding on the base metal(SS400) with filler metal which contain composite powders($Cr_3C_2+Mn+Mo+NbC$) and solid wire(JIS-YGW11). Characteristics of hardness and wear resistance on overlays were analyzed by EDS, EPMA, XRD and microstructures. Carbide formations were $M(Cr, Fe)_7C_3$ and NbC phases. And carbide volume fraction, hardness and specific wear resistance of overlays were increased with increasing powder feed rate and decreasing wire fred rate. Hardness and wear resistance were almost proportioned to carbide volume fraction of overlay.

  • Austenitic stainless steel has good weldability but is sensitive to hot cracking such as solidification crack and liquation crack. In this study, the specimens of dissimilar metals made between austenitic stainless steel and Al-brass were welded by GTAW process using four different filler metals. Cracks were detected in the heat-affected zone of the stainless steel when welded with CuAl, CuSn and NiCu filler metals, but no cracks were detected a Ni filler metal was used. The cracks propagated along the grain boundary in the heat affected zone near the fusion line to base metal of 316L stainless steel. The cracks were located inside the weld bead with very fine hairline crack. All cracks initiated at the fusion line and moved forward in the base metal. From energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), Cu peak was detected only in the crack-opening area.

  • In this study, the formability of laser welded blanks were investigated through tesile test and formability test. Several samples which had the various thickness were joined by laser welding. Mechanical properties of laser welded blank measured from the tensile test are higher than those of the base metal. Fomability is lower than that of the base metal.

  • This study reports the synthesis of a bi-dentate Schiff base ligand (L), 7-(2-((2-formylbenzylidene) amino)-2-phenylacetamido)-3-methyl-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid, prepared from phthalaldehyde and cephalexin antibiotic. The synthesized Schiff base ligand (L) and the secondary ligand alizarin (Az) are used to prepare the new complexes [M(Az)2(L)] and [Cr(Az)2(L)]Cl, where M = Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II). The mode of bonding of the Schiff base has been characterized by UV-Visible, FT-IR, Mass, 1H-, and 13C-NMR spectroscopic techniques, and micro elemental analysis (CHNS). The complexes were characterized using UV-Vis, FT-IR, molar conductance, magnetic moment, and thermal analysis (TG/DTG). The molar conductance data revealed that the complexes are non-electrolytes except for [Cr(L)(Az)2]Cl, which is an electrolytic type 1:1. The Schiff base and its complexes have been tested for their biological activity against two strains of bacteria and one fungus. When screened against gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens, the Az and L ligands and their complexes showed potential antimicrobial activity.

  • Automotive manufactures have taken more interests in tailored sheet metals for improving the rigidity, weight reduction, crash durability, and cost savings so that their application to auto-bodies has been increased. However, since the tailored sheet metals do not behave like un-welded sheet metals in press forming operations, the stamping engineers no longer rely only on conventional forming techniques. Futhermore, there is no clear understanding of the characteristics of welded metal which influence the overall press formability of tailored sheet metals. Recently, the computer simulations are prevailing for the evaluation of the formability. Unfortunately, the mechanical property of tailored sheet metal has to be quantitatively defined in the simulation. In this study, the analytical equations are formulated in order to find the mechanical properties of the welded metal in the tailored sheet metal welded by co$_2$laser. Based on force distribution assumption, the constitutive behavior of the welded metal is investigated using uniaxial tensile test results of base metals and tailored sheet metal. Then, the strength coefficient, work-hardening exponent, and plastic strain ratio of laser-welded metal are calculate from those of base metals and tailored sheet metal. In addition, the existence of weld defects in the welded metal is indirectly detected by examining the slop of strength coefficient of the welded metal.

  • As a filler metal for lowering the melting point of Ag, many alloy metal candidates have emerged, such as cadmium, with zinc, manganese, nickel, and titanium as active metals. However, since cadmium is known to be harmful to the human body, Cd-free filler metals are now mainly used. Still, no study has been conducted comparing the characteristics of joints prepared with and without cadmium. In addition, studies have yet to be conducted comparing the typical characteristics of brazing filler metals with special structures, and the joint characteristics of brazing filler metals with available frames. In this study, the characteristics of junctions of silver-based intercalation metals were compared based on the type of filler metal additives, using a special structure, a filler metal sandwich structure, to protect the internal base metal. The general filler metal was compared using the structure, and the thickness of the filler metal according to the thickness was reached. A comparison of the characteristics of the junction was conducted to identify the characteristics of an intersection of silver-based brazing filler metal and the effect on joint strength. Each filler metal's collective tensile strength was measured, and the relationship between joint characteristics and tensile joint strength was explored. The junction was estimated through micro strength measurement, contact angle measurement with the base metal when the filler metal was melted, XRD image observation, composition analysis for each phase through SEM-EDS, and microstructure phase acquisition.

  • The change of microstructures in the base metal during transient liquid phase bonding process of directionally Ni base superalloy, GTD-111 was investigated. Bonds were fabricated using a series of holding times(0-7.2ks) at three different temperatures(1403, 1418 and 1453K) under a vacuum of 13.3mPa. In raw material, ${\gamma}$- ${\gamma}$' eutectic phases, platelet η phases, MC carbide and PFZ were seen in interdendritic regions or near grain boundary and size of primary ${\gamma}$' precipitates near interdendritic regions were bigger than core region. The primary ${\gamma}$' precipitates in dendrite core were dissolved early in bonding process, but ${\gamma}$' precipitates near interdendritic regions were dissolved partially and shape changed. The dissolution rate increased with increasing temperature. Phases in interdendritic regions or near pain boundary continually changed with time at the bonding temperature. In the bonding temperature of 1403K, eutectic phases had not significantly changed, but η phases had transformed from platelet shape to needle morphology and PFZ region had widened with time. The interdendritic region and near pain boundary were liquated partially at 1423k and fully at 1453k by reaction of η phases and PFZ. In the bonding temperature of 1453K, interdendritic region and near pain boundary were liquated and then new phases which mixed with η phases, PFZ and MC carbide crystallized during cooling. Crystallized η phases transformed from rod shape to platelet shape with increasing holding time.
