The utilization of feeding white sweet lupin (Lupinus angustifolius cv. Uniwhite) seeds supplemented with the limiting amino acids were investigated in day-old single comb White Leghorn male chicks. These were fed a commercial chick mash for the first 10 days and on a semi-synthetic protein-free diet for the next 6 days. For the subsequent 6 days of experimental feeding period, the birds were fed on the protein-free diet, basal diet containing 9.31% of lupin seed meal (LSM) protein, diets supplemented with methionine, methionine + tryptophan or methionine + tryptophan + lysine in the basal diet, and diet containing 9.84% of soybean meal (SBM) protein. When the LSM protein was supplemented with methionine, protein intake, body weight gain, protein efficiency ratio (PER) and net protein ratio (NPR) were increased (p<0.05). The birds excreted lower urinary nitrogen and fecal nitrogen per protein comsumption, had improved apparent (AD) and true (TD) digestibility but did not alter biological value (BV) of the protein. Metabolizability (MEn/GE) and heat production (HP) per MEn intake (HP/MEn) was lowered while energy retention (ER) was highered (p<0.05) compared with those of the basal diet. Also the body weight gain, PER, NPR and ER was increased but the BV and HP/MEn was lowered compared with those of the SBM protein. The results indicated that lupin seed supplemented with methionine increase body weight gain and energy rentention but did not alter biological value compared with those of lupin seed and soybean meal.

This study was aimed at investigating the gene expression profile in basal ganglia of cadmium exposed rat based on cDNA array analysis. For cDNA array analysis, adult Sprague-Dawley male rats (350 ${\pm}$ 25 g) were intraperitoneally injected with 2.0 mg/kg body weight/day of CdCl2 (0.3 ml) for 5 days. For doserelated gene expression analysis rats were intraperitoneally injected with 0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 1.0 mg/kg body weight/day of CdCl$_2$ for 5 days. Control rats were injected with equal volume of saline. Cadmium concentration of brain was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. For cDNA array, RNA samples were extracted from basal ganglia and reverse-transcribed in the presence of [${\alpha}$32P]-dATP. Membrane sets of the Atlas Rat 1.2 array II and Toxicology array 1.2 (Clontech, Palo Alto, CA) were hybridized with cDNA probe sets. RT-PCR was employed to validate the relative gene expression patterns obtained from the cDNA array. Northern blot hybridization methods were employed to assess the dose-related gene expression. Among the 2352 cDNAs, 671 genes were detected in both array sets and 63 genes of 38 classes showed significant (more than two fold) changes in expression. Thirty five of these genes were up-regulated and twenty eight were down-regulated in the cadmium exposed group. According to the dose-related gene expression analysis, heat shock 27 kDa protein (HSP27), neurodegeneration-associated protein 1 (Neurodap 1) genes were significantly up-regulated and melatonin receptor 1a (Mel1a), Kinesin family member 3C (KIF3C), novel kinesinrelated protein (KIF1D) genes were significantly downregulated even in the low-dose of cadmium exposed group (0.1 mg/kg body weight/day). Conclusions Sixty three genes detected in this study can give some more useful informations about the cadmium-induced neurotoxicity in the basal ganglia. As well as, HSP27, Neurodap1, Mel1a, KIF3C and KIF1D genes may be useful for the study of the cadmium-induced neurotoxicity because these genes showed dramatic changes of mRNA levels in response to the low dose of cadmium exposure.
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer and its incidence is steadily increasing. Prior radiation therapy is one of the most important risk factors for BCC. Although the mechanism remains undefined, long-term studies have shown that people exposed to radiation have an increased risk of BCC. Despite the fact that BCC occurs most frequently in sun-exposed areas of the body, patients with a history of radiation therapy have an increased risk of BCC in areas previously exposed to radiation. Here, we report a case of adenoid BCC on the abdomen in a 67-year-old woman after radiation therapy post-hysterectomy.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of different fat source feeding on growth performance, visceral organ weight, meat color, excreta microflora and blood profiles in broilers. A total of 768 1-d-old ROSS 308 broilers (mixed gender) with an initial average body weight of 39.68 ± 0.14 g were randomly allotted to 4 treatments with 12 replicate pens per treatment and 16 broilers per pen for 32 days. Dietary treatments were: 1) SBO, basal diet + 5% soybean oil, 2) PF, basal diet + 5% poultry fat, 3) TAL, basal diet + 5% tallow, and 4) LARD, basal diet + 5% lard. During d 1 to 14, broilers fed TAL diet had a higher (P<0.05) body weight gain (BWG) than broilers fed with PF and LARD diets, moreover, broilers fed TAL diet had a higher (P<0.05) feed intake than broilers fed SBO, PF and LARD diets. Overall (d 0-32), BWG in SBO and TAL treatments was greater (P<0.05) than that in LARD treatment. The meat color a* (redness) of broilers fed with LARD diet was increased (P<0.05) compared with broilers fed with PF and TAL diets. No difference was observed in visceral organ weight of liver, spleen, bursa of Fabricius, breast muscle, abdominal fat, gizzard and excreta concentrations of Lactobacillus and Escherichia coli. The blood LDL cholesterol concentration in TAL treatment was higher (P<0.05) than that in LARD treatment. In conclusion, broilers supplementation with tallow could improve not only the body weight gain and feed intake but also blood LDL cholesterol concentration. Moreover, broiler fed lard could increase a* (radness) of meat color, while the soybean oil supplementation improve body weight gain in broilers.

Objectives: To determine whether the body weight, body mass index (BMI), and basal serum level of LH, FSH, testosterone (T), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) are related to the ovarian response to clomiphene citrate (CC) in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Materials and Method: From January 1996 to June 1997, total 57 patients with PCOS were enrolled in the present study. Women who had other infertility factors were excluded from our study. The ovulation induction using CC was used in all patients. The patients were grouped into 50 mg group, 100 mg group, and 150 mg group according to their daily CC dose. The patients were also grouped to ovulatory and non-ovulatory group. The body weight, BMI, and basal serum level of LH, FSH, T, DHEA-S were measured in all patients on the 2nd or 3rd day of the menstrual cycle. Results were analysed with Student's t-test and Fisher's exact test. Results: The body weight and BMI of the nonovulating group were significantly higher than those of the ovulating group in all groups (50, 100, 150 mg of CC). However, there were no significant differences of the level of LH and FSH between ovulating and nonovulating groups in all CC groups (50, 100, 150 mg). The level of T of nonovulating group was significantly higher in 50 and 100 mg of CC groups, but not in 150 mg group. The level of DHEA-S of the non-ovulating group is significantly higher in 50 mg group, but not in 100 and 150 mg groups. Conclusion: The body weight and BMI could be useful predictors of ovarian response to CC in patients with PCOS, and basal T and DHEA-S also might be useful in cases of low-dose CC treatment.
The experiment was conducted to compare the effects of supplements of copper, vitamin I and selenium on growth and immune responses of broiler chicks fed cornsoy diets. The basal diet contained 21% crude protein, 2,800 kcal ME, 10 mg Vitamin E, 10 mg copper and 0.1 mg selenium per kg diet. Additions of the basal diet were copper (150mg and 250 mg/kg) or combination of vitamin I(200 mg/kg) and selenium(2 mg/kg). Serum immunoglobulin G(IgG) concentrations and body weight gain were determined weekly from hatching to 7 weeks of age. Additions of copper(150mg, 250mg) to the basal diet were showed, at the four weeks of age, 4.8% and 4.5% higher in body weight gain than that of control group, respectively. The active immune system of copper and (Vit. E+Se) treated groups developed one week earlier than control group(basal diet). Negative correlation between IgG concentration and body weight gain was showed at the period from hatching to three weeks of age and, thereafter, positive correlation were identified (p<0.01). Mortality rates were observed lower in all treated groups than that of control. In conclusion, the lower the levels of serum IgG, at the first two weeks of age, the lower in disease Infection and the higher in body weight gain.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of fasting therapy on the changes of body composition in obese adolescents. Methods : We examined the body composition of obese adolescents three times; before fasting, on the second refeeding day, two or four weeks later. Results : Body weight, body mass index(BMI), basal metabolic rate(BMR) and lean body mass (LBM) were decreased during the fasting, whereas percent-fat was increased. After fasting, patients have the dietary period. During this period BMR and LBM were increased and the decrease of percent-fat was continued. Conclusions : It seems that fasting therapy with keeping up well-controlled dietary period and receiving oriental medical management can be useful to decrease percent-fat in obese patients.
The objective of this study was to estimate the optimum dietary essential amino acid pattern for male Taiwan country chicks. A series of experiments was conducted with chicks, 14 d of age, for 2 wks. A basal synthetic diet was established using a dose response test for all essential amino acids referring to the broiler requirements recommended by NRC (1994). Twelve chicks were sacrificed at the beginning to provide initial body nitrogen data, and every group of six birds received the basal diet or a diet with a deficiency in a single essential amino acid in twenty one treatments by intubation according to their daily metabolic body weight (MBW). Deposited body nitrogen was determined using comparative slaughtering. According to the daily intake from the limiting amino acid per unit of MBW and the body nitrogen accretion rates for every two deficient groups with the same limiting amino acid but at different levels, a corresponding straight line was computed for each essential amino acid to intersect with a horizontal line made by the body nitrogen accretion rate of the control group. The x coordinate of the intersection represented the daily requirement for growth plus maintenance based on MBW corresponding to the essential amino acid. The amino acid ratios can be considered as the optimum pattern of dietary essential amino acids. The results, expressed with respect to lysine = 100, were arginine 105, methionine 81, histidine 34, tryptophan 18, leucine 103, phenylalanine 135, isoleucine 69, threonine 65 and valine 79. This pattern could be utilized to compute the dietary requirements (g/kg feed) for all essential amino acids by multiplying by the requirement of a single essential amino acid cited from the literature.
This study was conducted to investigate the physical activity pattern, activity coefficient, basal metabolic rate and energy expenditure of female university students. One-day activity diaries were collected from 95 female university students in Seoul. Body composition was measured by Inbody 720. Subjects spent 7 hr 8min on sleeping, 6 hr 31min on studying, 2 hr 50min on physiological activity, 2 hr 3min on leisure, 2 hr 2min on walking and jogging, 1 hr 58 min on commuting and 22min on house chores. The activity coefficient of these subjects was 1.58. The comparison of body composition of subjects according to PAL showed that body weight, body fat mass, arm circumference and arm muscle circumference of physically active group were significantly higher than those of the sedentary group. BMR calculated by Harris-Benedict (H-B) formula and DRI formula and BMR measured by Inbody 720 was 1375 kcal, 1306 kcal and 1209 kcal, respectively. Total energy expenditure (TEE) examined by one-day activity diaries and calculated by H-B formula and estimated energy requirement (EER) formula in DRI was 2102.1 kcal, 2184.4 kcal, and 2164.5 kcal, respectively. The Pearson correlation coefficient between TEE examined by one-day activity diaries and H-B TEE was 0.795 (p < 0.001) while that between TEE examined and DRI EER was 0.604 (p < 0.001). Overall data indicated that female university students seemed to be less active. Therefore it is recommended that universities develop good exercise programs for their students. Further studies are needed to generate more meaningful results with a larger sample size and using machine attached to the body, which are able to detect physical activity more accurately.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of fermented fruits (FF) on the growth performance, Enterobacteriaceae and Lactobacillus counts in faeces of the post-weaning piglets. A total of twenty-four 4 weeks old Landrace${\times}$ Large White${\times}$Duroc with initial body weight of 6 kg were used in this study. The piglets were housed individually in metabolic cage and randomly assigned to four groups with six piglets per group. The piglets were fed on basal diet without antibiotic (AF), basal diets with antibiotic (Ab), basal diet with 10% (w/w) fermented fruit (10% FF) and basal diet with 20% (w/w) fermented fruit (20% FF). Faecal samples were taken directly from the rectum of each piglet and cultured for Enterobacteriaceae and Lactobacillus counts. In the growth performance, the piglets of Ab and 10%FF had significantly higher (p<0.05) average daily gain than those of 20%FF. However, no differences (p>0.05) were observed between AF, Ab and 10%FF. Studies showed that the use of fermented fruits (FF) could significantly (p<0.05) reduce Enterobacteriaceae population in piglets' faeces compared to the use of normal feed (AF) and antibiotic (Ab). However, the Lactobacillus population in the faeces was increased in those piglets fed with diets added with FF.
