  • To solve the corrosion problem of industrial equipment and other constructions containing metals, corrosion protection can be performed by using coating which provides a barrier between the metal and its environment. Coatings play a significant role in protecting irons and steels in harsh marine and acid environments. This study was conducted to identify an anti-corrosive epoxy coating for carbon steel composite with 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt% concentrations of nanoparticles of SiO2 using the dip-coating method. The electrochemical behavior was analyzed with open circuit potential (OCP) technics and polarization curves (Tafle) in 3.5 wt% NaCl and 5 vol% H2SO4 media. The structure, composition, and morphology were characterized using different analytical techniques such as X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared spectrum (FT-IR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results revealed that epoxynano SiO2 coating demonstrated a lower corrosion rate of 2.51 × 10-4 mm/year and the efficiency of corrosion protection was as high as 99.77%. The electrochemical measurement showed that the nano-SiO2 / epoxy coating enhanced the anti-corrosive performance in both NaCl and H2SO4 media.

  • Poly (ethylene 2, 6-naphthalate) (PEN) has been used for a high performance engineering plastics such as fiber, film, and packaging, because of excellent physical properties and outstanding gas barrier characteristics [1-2]. However, the application of PEN is limited because PEN exhibits a relatively high melt viscosity. Recently, many researches for organic/inorganic composites by applying nano-particles to the polymer matrix have been carried out [3], and the nano-particles exhibited greatly improved mechanical and rheological properties [4]. • In this paper, the procedure for deriving an infinite element that is compatible with the quadrilateral Q8 element is first summarized. Enhanced by a self mesh-expansion procedure for generating the impedance matrices of different frequencies for the region extending to infinity, the infinite element is used to simulate the far field of the soil-structure system. The structure considered here is of the box type and the soils are either homogeneous or resting on a bedrock. Using the finite/infinite element approach, a parametric study is conducted to investigate the effect of open and in-filled trenches in reducing the structural vibration caused by a train passing nearby, which is simulated as a harmonic line load. The key parameters that dominate the performance of wave barriers in reducing the structural vibrations are identified. The results presented herein serve as a useful guideline for the design of open and in-filled trenches concerning wave reduction.

  • The purpose of this paper is the optimal design of a single-phase LSPM(Line-Start Permanent Magnet Motor). A single-phase LSPM has a permanent magnet in the rotor that is same as induction motor. For that reason, magnet is operated by breaking torque in starting region and alignment torque in driving region. Therefore, we need the design process considering the trade-off relationship. In this paper, we propose the design process of a single-phase LSPM for a high starting torque and efficiency with equivalent circuit and FEM. And we use Taguchi Method for considering tolerance in manufacture. Finally, we compared the LSPM that is designed in this paper and conventional induction motor.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a representative hydrophilic and water-soluble polymer and widely employed in various applications such as fibers for clothes and industries, films, membranes, medicines for drug delivery system, and cancer cell-killing embolic materials. Moreover, PVA fibers, gels, and films are potentially high-performance materials because they have high tensile and impact strengths, high tensile modulus, high abrasion resistance, excellent alkali resistance, and oxygen barrier property which are superior to those of any known polymers[1,2]. • KSTAR cryostat is a 8.8 m diameter vacuum vessel that provides the necessary thermal barrier between the ambient temperature test cell and the supercritical helium cooled superconducting magnet providing the base pressure of 1 ${\times}$ $10^{-3}Pa$. The cryostat is a single walled vessel consisting of central cylindrical section and two end closures, a flat base structure with external reinforcements and a dome-shaped lid structure. The base structure has 8 equally spaced support legs anchored on the concrete base. The cryostat vessel design was executed to satisfy the performance and operation requirements. The major loads considered in the structural analysis were vacuum pressure, dead weight, electromagnetic load driven by plasma disruption, and seismic load. Based on the fabrication and inspection procedures for the vessel, cryostat vessel was fabricated and inspected. It was confirmed that the inspection results were acceptable.

  • Flexible CIGS thin film solar cell was fabricated using STS430 plate as a flexible substrate in this work. A diffusion barrier layer of $SiO_2$ thin film was deposited on STS430 substrate by PECVD followed by deposition of double layered Mo back contact. After depositing CIGS absorber layer by co-evaporation, CdS buffer layer by chemical bath deposition, ZnO window layer by RF sputtering and Al electrode by thermal evaporation, the solar cell fabrication processes were completed and its performance was evaluated. Corresponding solar cell showed an conversion efficiency of 8.35 % with $V_{OC}$ of 0.52 V, $J_{SC}$ of 26.06 mA/$cm^2$ and FF of 0.61.

  • An acoustic total or partial enclosure is widely used to reduce the sound pressure level propagating from a noise source. However, the performance of the acoustic enclosure is decreased by its inherent limitations such as temperature rise or acoustic pressure build up inside the enclosed acoustic field. In general, a silencer is installed to overcome these limitations, for large amount of air can be exchanged through the silencers. In this reason, a parallel baffle type duct silencer with acoustic resonators is studied to reduce the transmitted noise from a transformer. In this silencer, the high frequency components of the transmitted noise over 360Hz are effectively absorbed by the parallel baffles and the other ones, 120 and 240 Hz, are reduced due to the presence of Helmholtz resonators. Large sound attenuation is achieved by applying the sound resonating barrier to the large transformers in a substation.

  • There are a lot of different types of noise from construction site and it depends on construction stage, equipment type and number of operating equipments. The problem is that the almost noise from construction site is high level and some kinds of noise levels are over 100 dB. In addition, if construction site is located in downtown, there are a few options to reduce noise level. Therefore several site mitigation plans were developed to reduce different types of construction noises such as breaker work, gang form and asphalt saw. They were applied in site and evaluated noise reduction performance. The test result of site insertion loss was between 4~8 dB depends on the equipment and type of work.

  • DC characteristics of recessed gate 4H-SiC MESFET were investigated using the device/circuit simulation tool, PISCES. Results of theoretical calculation were compared with the experimental data for the extraction of modeling parameters which were implemented for the prediction of DC and gate leakage characteristics at high temperatures. The current-voltage analysis using a fixed mobility model revealed that the short channel effect is influenced by the defects in SiC. The incomplete ionization models are found out significant physical models for an accurate prediction of SiC device performance. Gate leakage is shown to increase with the device operation temperatures and to decrease with the Schottky barrier height of gate metal.
