  • Four treatment leveles(check 500, 1, 000 2, 000ppm) of Ethrel were applied to barley and wheat grown in greenhouse and fields at three stages (preboot, boot, afterboot) of growth in orderd to induce male sterility and to evaluate possibility of practical $F_1$-hybrid-seed production as gametocide. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The shortening plant height, especially the first internode length. spike length and decreasing 1, 000 seeds weight and induction of male sterility, were observed with all Ethrel theatments. The earier the stage of spraying at the boot and the higher concentration of Ethrel, the greater effects were observed. 2. The most practical level of inducing male sterility occurred ranging from 1, 000-2, 000ppm applied at all stages, while with increasing maturity, greater concentration of Ethrel were required to induce the same level of male sterility. .3. Great differences for male sterility per spike in bagged and unbagged spikes were shown with all treatments indicated ovary receptiveness, and that out-crossing has taken place, 4. Ethrel treatment induced more practicable extent of male sterility in barley than wheat. This results indicated that $F_1$-hybrid-seed production in barley with gametocide appears feasible if high combining ability lines were selected for increased out-crossing ratio. 5. There seemed to be no indication of additive surfactant influence on the Ehrel action in the present studies, and showed an interest on further studies on this matter.

  • In an attempt to study the possibility of substituting sweet potato for cereals as raw materials for Kochujang, three kinds of Kochujang were made from barley, sweet potato or 50% barley and 50% sweet potato, The results of component variation during the ripening and the effect of temperature on the aging in the harvesting season of sweet potato were as follows: 1) Kochujang is, usually, manufactured in May, but no difference was observed in aging condition when it was manufactured in September, the season of sweet potato harvest, since the inner temperature of the product was around $20^{\circ}C$. 2) The total reducing sugar content and maturity reached maximum after $40{\sim}50\;days$ of fermentation in the three treatments and crude fat content tended to be slightly decreased during fermentation. 3) Lightness in color of the three kinds of Kochujang decreased by exposure to sunlight. Sweetpotato Kochujang showed a stronger tendency to increase the redness as compared with the rest. 4) Sensory evaluation showed that sweet potato Kochujang was less acceptable than barley Kochujang due to disagreeable flavor of sweet potato but mixed Kochujang showed little difference, as compared with barley Kochujang.

  • These experiments were conducted to study the relationship among agronomic traits, varietal variation of grain-filling periods and the effect of environmental conditions on the grain-filling in the ten selected barley cultivars. The varietal variation of grain-filling periods was of significance: Tokak had the similar increment in both greenhouse and field plot, Suweon two row was believed to be an cultivar with short grainfilling period. Cultivars with higher grain-filling rates tended to. have significantly lower ash content. Ash content of a cultivar tended to be lower when grown under favorable condition. At maturity, the time of development of yellow or dark pigment at the crease base could be a possible criterion for physiological maturity determination. However, this requires further study. Average grain-filling period in the different conditions was constant, but varietal differences were 9 days in the greenhouse and 5 days in the field. The grain moisture content was not constant in accordance to both cultivars and growing conditions. Average accelerated days for heading and ripening periods were very constant in comparision with field and vinyl mulching suggests that the selected materials will be useful for genetic study on grain-filling periods. The cultivars and grown conditions with higher accumulated temperature per $100^{\circ}C$ from early grain-filling had larger grain-filling rates and heavier 1000 grain weight. This study showed that if the variation among and within cultivars is to be minimized, the greenhouse and vinyl mulching plots could be useful for genetic study on grain-filling periods in $BC_1$ and $F_2$ segregation.

  • A simple conservation technique baled silage making of selected froage materials was discussed in Suwon and in Muan county during 1991 - 1992. Eleven species of forage crops and pasture grasses(maize. sorghum, pearl millet, barnyardgrass, rye, barley, spring oat, Italian ryegrass, orchardgrass, alfalfa and grass-legume pasture mixtures) were harvested at different growth stage from young plant to maturity and baled in a self constructed square baling chamber, and wrapped in a 0.05mm thick polyethylene plastic film. Each bales measured by 90cm long, 60cm wide and 50cm height and weighted between 15~20kg in dry matter basis. physio-molphologcal characteristics of the plants, leaf weight ratio(LWR), leaf area ratio(LAR), stalk ratio (SR), stalk hardness(SH) and other growth parameters, were analysed and were used as a parameter to evaluate the suitability of materials for baling. Italian ryegrass including orchardgrass, alfalfa and pasture mixtures produced high quality baled silage. Silage quality point(F1ieg-point) of Italian ryegrass was improved from 63 point in crushed custom silage to 75 piont in baled silage. Meterial of grass-legume pasture mixtures showed 55 point in crushed silage and 67 point in baled silage. Fodder rye, barley, spring oat and barnyardgrass were also evaluated as a good materials for baled silage making. On the other hand, meize including sorghum and peral millet were evaluated as a not suitable materals for baling due to its high value of SR and SH. Quality of maize was excellent with 88 point in clushed silage and medium with 47 point in baled silage making.

  • To achieve self-sufficiency in good production, cotton should be grown after barley in the southern part of Korea. But, this cropping system reduces cotton yields and fiber qualities in the current leading cotton varieties because of the short frost-free growth period. Ethrel-treated plots shortened the time to open boll by about 20days, increased the percentage of open bolls before the first frost from 38% to 93% and increased yield by 15-38%. There are not significant differences in staple length, tensile strength of the fiber, single bollweight, 100 seeds weight and germination percentage of the seeds between Ethrel-treated and untreated plots. Ethrel should be recommended to the farmers growing cotton after barley harvest.

  • Finding the variations of principal agronomic traits, fourteen malting barley cultivars were tested with both narrow-spaced row seeding and broadcasting on high ridge respectively. The seeding rates were varied as 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 liter per 10a in the narrow-spaced row seeding and 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 litre in the broad casting on his ridge respectively. As a result of the test, there were highly significant differences in variation pattern of assessed traits among cultivars. However, the additional seeding rates in both seeding methods caused the drifts of earlier heading and maturity, longer in culm length, linear increase in number of spike and yields per unit area, slight reduction in 1000 grain weight, and slight increase in one litre weight, but no changes in number of grain per spike.

  • This study was carried out to clarify the barley grain development process under the double cropping paddy. The maximum length, width, and thickness of Baekdong were reached at 33,42, and 45 days after heading. They were not significantly reduced by 11, 7, and 5 days earlier harvesting than their above maximum develop-ing periods, respectively. Physiological maturity times were observed at about 40-46 days after heading, and the moisture contents were ranged 28-31 %. Practical maturity times were about 7 -8 days earlier than physiological ones. The beginning times of the sharp development phase of grain were delayed for two to ten days by delay of seeding times. However, the periods of the stationary and the lag development phases were about nine to ten days each and they were little changed by seeding times.

  • Temperature effects on the grain filling of winter barley(CV. Gangbori, Olbori and Suwon 18) were studied in controlled environments under three day /night temperature regimes (viz. 25/20, 20/15 and 15/10$^{\circ}C ) and at three stages of development, viz. Vegetative, spike development and grain filling stages. Physiological maturity times to the temperature regimes were observed at 53 to 57 days after heading at 15/10$^{\circ}C , 43 to 45 days and 32 to 33 days at 20/15$^{\circ}C and 25/5$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. When plants were grown in 25/20$^{\circ}C during the spike development stages, the number of spikes per plant and grains per spike decreased by 39% and 41% respectively compared with 20/15$^{\circ}C of day / night temperature. The effect of high temperature on grain weight was not significant in all growth phases except post-anthesis where grain weight decreased by 30%. Therefore, the most important temperature effects were round during the spike development stages.
