  • Effect of over flooding moisture levels on the growth and yield of barley and wheat crops was determined. The marked plant height retardation of barley under over saturated moisture treatment was observed at the elongating stage and wheat at the booting stage. The elongating and tillering stage subjected to over flooding moisture level significantly reduced panicle number and grain number per panicle, and 1000-grain weight reduction at the booting stage streated with over saturated moisture level. The highest yield reduction of two row and six row barley stage, under over flooting moisture level. Soil wet resistance observed in decreasing order; wheat<six row barley<two row barley.

  • In order to determine the relationships between the rates of leaf senescence and photosynthate translocation during the grain filling periods in barley, field experiments were conducted through 1989/1990 crop year. Thirty barley varieties and lines having different leaf senescence were used for the experiments. Varieties differed significantly in the rate of leaf senescence and rate of grain filling. The rate of leaf senescence at early (10-20days after heading) and late period (20-30days after heading) during of grain filling were positively correlated with the rate of grain filling in same period, respectively. But the rate of leaf senescence at 10-20 days after heading negatively correlated with the rate of grain filling during the whole grain filling period (10-35 days after heading). Whereas, the rate of leaf senescence at late period was positively associated with the rate of grain filling during the whole grain filling period. Rates of grain filling at the late and whole periods have positively influence on grain weight(r=0.62**~-0.93**), but rate of leaf senescence at early period and duration of grain filling negatively correlated with the grain weight (r=-0.33~ -0.15). The patterns of leaf senescence index for the varieties tested were grouped by four. Among these patterns, the most ideal pattern was IV type.

  • To observe the effects of temperature and photoperiod on the growth and yield of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum, L) eight varieties including Chang Kwang were tested at various treatments like longday-high temperature (24hrs-20\circ), shortdayhigh temperature (12hrs-20\circ), longday-low temperature (24hrs-14\circ) and shortday-low temperature (12hrs-14\circ). Among the traits measured, days to heading, plant height, spike length, number of spikes per hill and grain yield per hill were generally decreased at high temperature and long day treatment and increased at low temperature and shortday condition. Number of grains per spike was decreased at low temperature and short day condition while increased at longday and high temperature conditions. Grain weight was decreased significantly at high temperature and shortday while increased at low temperature and longday treatment.

  • It was confirmed that korean scabby barley during the summer of 1963 was infected with Gibberella zeae. Feeding experiments showed that the diseased grain was toxic and induced emesis in pigs. The concentrated extracts which contained the emetic principle were prepared by refluxing the grain with methanol or water for 5 hours and then concentrating the filtrates and the washing in vacuum. Animal tests proved that methanol extraction for the emetic principle was more effective than extraction with water.

  • The major food grains in Korea are rice and barley. The wheat was supplied from USA after World War II in 1945 and it changed the eating habits for Korean diet. The role of barley as a food grain has been diminished and that of wheat has been acknowledged; the consumption per capita per year of wheat is over the half of that of rice which is the staple grain in Korea. This article is a brief review on the background of wheat becoming the important grain in Korean diet and the following developmental story of flour mills. Emphasis was given to the statistics on flour mills industry.

  • Spawn is the vegetative growth of the mycelium and serves as the inoculum or seed for cultivating mushrooms. Various cereal grains, such as wheat, millet, barley, sorghum, brown rice, rye, and oat were assessed to compare their characteristics and suitability for spawn production of button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus). The mycelial growth rates, density, and the number of completely colonized grains were measured from the twentieth day of inoculation. Wheat grains showed fastest mycelial growth with 8.4 cm followed by rye, oat, barley with 8.2, 7.5 and 7.3 cm, respectively. In the mycelial density, foxtail millet, barley, and sorghum were best compared with that of wheat grains. Especially, the number of grains which were completely colonized by mycelia were greatest in foxtail millet with 5,123 grains followed by proso millet, and wheat with 3,052 and 914, respectively. Based on the results obtained, barley, foxtail millet, and sorghum grains would be appropriate substituting for wheat grain in spawn production of button mushroom.

  • Two different cultivars of barley, with either the ordinary-level or double-strength nitrogen application, were grown in two districts simultaneously, in order to study the extent of dwarfing in plant height, lodging and grain-yield increase with ethylene-releasing agents (Ethrel and dl-methionine alone or in combination). The shorter the plant height, the less the extent of lodging and the grain yield there were. With 500ppm Ethrel, 10% grain-yield increase was attained without showing apparent lodging, irrespective of the level of nitrogen applied. The double-strength nitrogen application resulted in severe lodging more than the ordinary-level and control, and lower grain yield accordingly. Consideration for importance of barley lodging in Korea today and the controlling measure with ethylene treatment for dwarfing, and yield increase by increased nitrogen application, were discussed.

  • Effects of nitrogen top-dressing method on quality of barley were evaluted over amount of 2 and 4 kg per 10a on volcanic ash soil in Japan under regrowth stage, productive tiller stage and heading stage. 55% milling time was longer by the amount of top- dressing, but that was not influenced by the times of top-dressing. And glassiness, whiteness, hardness and 8 minute- millng rate were not influenced by times and amounts of top-dressing. Crude protein rate of grain was increased by amount of nitrogen top-dressing, but that did not correlated with time of nitrogen top-dressing. Crude protein rate of grain was positively correlated with 55% milling time. But that did not correlated with whiteness of 8 minute-milled grain. 8 minute-milling rate was negatively correlated with whiteness of 8 minute-milled grain. There was no visible difference of protein matrix with scanning electron microscope in different nitrogen levels.

  • As the awareness of food security has increased, the Korean government has established national projects, such as Saemangeum proclaimed land, to secure sources of grain. Saemangeum is a large-scale agricultural area that was constructed to maintain preparedness for unstable food markets. This study aims to develop a $6^{th}$ Industrialization Model (SIM) for Saemangeum Grain Complex by applying feasible strategies to wheat and two-rowed barley which have low self-sufficiency rates. In addition, this study estimates the potential economic value of each development strategy associated with a sixth industrialization model to create higher added values from production, processing and tourism experiences. The strategic plan for primary, secondary, and tertiary industries is to combine cultivating and processing wheat and two-rowed barley for sales and linking them to tourism experience. This study shows value added from the combination of the primary, secondary and tertiary industry of wheat and two-rowed barley are 7.5 and 23.0 times more than those of the primary and tertiary industry combination, respectively. Through branding Saemangeum Grain Complex's products, such as Saemanguem bread and craft beer, would further enhance the economic benefits derived from the complex.
