This study was conducted to investigate the bark production from a top branch(Woojuk) of lacquer tree(Rhus verniciflua) that collected Rhus lacquer in summer, analyzing a relationship between several factors - diameter, tree weight, weight of Woojuk and bark. The weight of Woojuk averaged was made up $48\%$ of the tree on average. As the weight of the tree increased, however, the Woojuk showed the rising trend. It was turned out that the tree size for making 1kg of dry bark must be at least DBB 8cm. The result on Woojuk's bark was that $43.3\%$ of total trees produced a green bark of 1.1kg to 1.5kg, and most of them put out 1.5kg and less. Also the rate of trees to make 0.6kg to 1.0kg of dry bark was highest in $50.8\%$, but its production in most trees was 1.0kg and below. As the moisture content of a green bark averaged $39\%$, it is estimated that the production of 1kg in dry bark requires at least 6kg of top branch in lacquer tree.

The defatted methanol extract of bark of Diospyros malabarica (DM) at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg, p.o. showed significant hypoglycemic activity on normal rats. The extract also exerted significant antihyperglycemic effect in alloxan-induced hyperglycemia and resulted in increase in plasma protein content and decrease in alkaline phosphatase, cholesterol and triglyceride levels when compared with those in the diabetic control group. However there were no significant changes in body and kidney weights of the DM extract-treated animals, compared to those of the untreated diabetic rats as a control. However, the DM extract showed a potential antioxidant activity by increasing catalase activity and reducing lipid peroxidation in liver. The results demonstrate antidiabetic activity of the defatted methanol extract of DM bark.
The calorific value is the most significant factor in woody biomass utilization. We measured the calorific value by the wood parts (debarked parts and bark) and moisture content for 3 major tree species (Larix kaempferi, Pinus koraiensis, and Pinus rigida). Results showed that the calorific value decreased exponentially as the moisture content increased regardless of tree species and the wood parts. The bark had higher calorific values than woody parts (de-barked parts). In addition, Pinus koraiensis had the highest calorific values among 3 study species.
Fustin comprised >98 and 73.0-86.7% of the total flavonoid content in the bark, and the stems and lignum of Rhus verniciflua, respectively. The butein, fisetin, and sulfuretin content varied between 0.31-2.17, 0.27-3.32, and 0.15-0.80 mg/g on a dry weight basis, respectively, in different parts of Rhus verniciflua. The urushiol content was 5.09-6.29, 55.05-56.30, and 0.38-0.39 mg/100 g on a dry weight basis in the stems, bark, and lignum, respectively. This showed that the bark of the tree had the highest urushiol content. C15:3 (pentadecatrienyl catechol), C15:1 (pentadecenyl catechol), and C15:2 (pentadecadienyl catechol) comprised 63, 33-35, and 2-3% of urushiol congeners in the tree bark, respectively.
This study was conducted to analyze the pore structure of Yellow poplar. Cross-sectional surfaces of heartwood and sapwood of Yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) were observed by SEM, and the true density of the heartwood, intermediate wood and sapwood were measured by gas pycnometery, while gas permeability and pore size of heartwood, intermediate wood and sapwood were measured by capillary flow porometery. The pores were classified as through pore, blind pore and closed pore. It was determined that the permeability was increased due to the content and size of through pore being increased although the total porosity of specimen showed slight difference from pith to bark. The content of through pore porosity was 33.754 % of heartwood and 47.810 % of sapwood, showed an increasing trend from pith to bark, however, those for the blind pore porosity and closed pore porosity were 27.890 % and 19.492 % for heartwood and 19.447 % and 4.660 % for sapwood, showed a decreasing trend from pith to bark. The max pore size of specimens was increased by about 5 times from $5.927{\mu}m$ to $31.334{\mu}m$, and mean flow pore size was increased by about 315 times from $0.397{\mu}m$ to $12.437{\mu}m$ from pith to bark.

This study investigates the characteristics of biochar by slow pyrolysis at $500^{\circ}C$ for various biomass residues. Six biomass materials were tested: Tree bark, Tree stem, bagasse, cocopeat, paddy straw and palm kernel shell. In the biochar yield, the effect of ash in the raw biomass was significant for paddy straw. Excluding the ash content, the timber bark, bagasse and paddy straw had a similar biochar yield of 26-29 wt.%. Tree stem and bagasse had well developed pores in a wide size range and large surface area over $200m^2/g$. Cocopeat and PKS has significantly higher biochar yield due to the increased content of lignin, but the development of intra-particle pores and microscopic surface area was very poor. The elemental composition, pH and other properties of the biochar samples were also compared.
The methanol extracts of Aralia elata bark showed antimicrobial activities against bacteria, yeast, fungi. The solvent fractionated acidic fraction that showed the activity was then successively purified with silica gel adsorption column chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, silica gel partition column chromatography, HPLC and TLC. The isolated major active substance was identified as 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid by MS, GC-MS, IR, $^{1}H-NMR\;and\;^{13}C-NMR$. The content of 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid was 0.869㎎/g in dried bark of Aralia elata.

Different parts of the mulberry plant are described to be potential sources of polyphenolics exhibiting strong antioxidant activity. In this study, we prepared various aqueous extracts of mulberry root bark by subjecting to steam at different temperatures and time intervals (45℃, 15 h; 70℃, 15 h; 95℃, 6 h and 95℃, 15 h) followed by extracting at 80℃ for 1 h. The total polyphenolic content ranged from 66.82-101.20 mg gallic acid equivalent (GE)/g of extract whereas the flavonoids were in the range of 13.03-25.23 mg catechin equivalent (CE)/g of extract. The extracts also exhibited strong antioxidant activities (0.99-1.66 mg trolox equivalent (TE)/g of extract in DDPH assay and 10.65-16.26 mg TE/g of extract in ABTS assay). This study clearly showed an improvement in the antioxidant activity of the water extract of mulberry root bark by the steam treatment, which can be used as a tea or health-promoting materials.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary Korean red pine bark extract as an antibiotic replacements on cholesterol, fatty acids and the shelf-life of chicken meat. To accomplish this, chickens were fed the optimal level of red pine bark extract that was found to replace antibiotics in the diet of broilers. A total of 180 male broilers(Ross strain 308) were divided into three treated groups, T1(control group), T2(8 ppm of avilamycin) and T3(65 ppm of red pine bark extract per kg diet). The lipid content was reduced by 24.67% and 20.49% in T3 group, while the cholesterol level also decreased significantly in the T3 group by 20.49% and 20.55% when compared to the T1 and T2 groups, respectively. In addition, the saturated fatty acid level was lower in the T3 group than in the T1 and T2 groups, while the unsaturated fatty acid level of the T3 group was significantly higher than those of the other groups. The TBARS value of chicken thigh muscle containing its skin on the 7th day of low temperature storage was significantly lower by 23.86% and 21.17% in the T3 group than in the T1 and T2 groups, respectively. Evaluation of the color of the meat revealed that the $L^*$value (lightness) and $b^*$value(yellowness) were higher in the T3 group than in the T1 and the T2 groups, but that the pH was significantly lower in the T3. Based on the results of this study, the addition of 65 ppm red pine bark extract to the diet of broilers should improve their meat quality with respect to the lipid contents and shelf-life when compared to the addition of antibiotics.
Objective: This study was carried out in order to determine the depositional characteristics of pine needles, pine bark, and soil used as a passive air sampler (PAS) for atmospheric polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Methods: All three media were sampled from the same site. The PBDE concentrations were analyzed by HRGC/HRMS, and the lipid contents were measured using the gravimetric method by n-hexane extraction. Results: The total PBDE concentration was the highest in soil (22,274.57 pg/g dry), followed by pine bark (20,266.39 pg/g dry), and then pine needles (7,380.22 pg/g dry). Pine needles contained the highest lipid contents (21.31 mg/g dry), whereas soil (10.01 mg/g dry), and pine bark (4.85 mg/g dry) contained less. There were poor correlations between lipid content and total PBDE concentrations in the media ($R^2$=0.8216, p=0.2814). Congeners BDE 47, 99, 183, 196, 197, 206, 207 and 209 showed peak concentrations. Among these, BDE 206, 207, and 209 are highly brominated PBDEs that exist as particulates in ambient air. They accounted for 81.2% [69.2 (pine needles) - 89.0% (tree bark)] of the concentration and therefore are noted as the main congener of the total PBDEs. Conclusions: It can therefore be concluded that for reducing error by improper sampling, the same species of media should be recommended for use as a PAS for atmospheric PBDEs due to the differences in depositional characteristics.
