Synthesis of Nanoparticles via Surface Modification for Electronic Applications

  • The demand for sub-micrometer or nanometer functional ceramic powders with a better suspension behavior in aqueous media in increasing. Redispersible barium titanate (BT) nanocrystals, green light emitting Mn2+ doped Zn$_2$SiO$_4$ and ZnS nanoparticle phosphors were synthesized by a hydrothermal method or chemical precipitation with surface modification. The nanoparticle redispersibility for BT was achieved by using a polymeric surfactant. X-ray diffraction(XRD) results indicated that the BT particles are of cubic phase with 80 nm in size. XRD results of zinc silicate phosphor indicate that seeds play an important role in enhancing the nucleation and crystallization of Zn$_2$SiO$_4$ crystals in a hydrothermal condition. This paper describes and discuss the methods of surface modification, and the resulting related properties for BT, zinc silicate and zinc sulfide.

  • This paper reports a newly developed sol-gel process to synthesize dense YBCO thick films with BaTiO$_3$additives using electrophoretic deposition and metal alkoxide sol/particle suspension, which we successfully produce dense $YBCO+BaTiO_3$ ceramics at a rather low temperature, compared with the sintering temperature used in conventional methods. The thick films of HTS were prepared by electrophoretic deposition, using pre-sintered powder with barium titanate addition in the form of $BaTi(OR)_6$ solution in suspension for electrophoresis. The conditions for applied voltage and deposition times for electrophoretic deposition of HTS thick films were studied in detail.

졸-겔 법에 의한 구형 미분체 Barium Titanate의 제조 (Synthesis of Barium Titanate Spherical Particles by Sol-Gel Method)

  • $BaTiO_3$ powders were prepared by sol-gel method from different concentration of KOH aqueous solution and Ba/Ti molar ratio. Particle shape, size and crystal structure of prepared $BaTiO_3$ powders were analyzed by SEM, XRD, and FT-IR. As the result of KOH concentration changing, spherical particles were obtained by condition more than 3 M and particle size decreased as concentration increasing. Different appearance showed between dried and sintered powders against changing of Ba/Ti molar ratio. In case of dried powders, the crystallinity decreased as molar ratio increasing. On the other hand, increased as molar ratio increasing in case of sintered powders.

세라믹 분말 크기가 압전 세라믹-폴리머 복합체의 유전 및 압전 특성에 미치는 영향 (Dielectric and Piezoelectric of Ceramic-Polymer Composite with Ceramic Particle Size)

  • Piezoelectric BaTiO$_3$-polymer composite were investigated for dielectric and piezoelectric properties with the barium titanate active particle size. Under the condition of the same density and ceramic volume ratio of composite, the dielectric and piezoelectric constant of composite are increasing as the ceramic particle size in composite are increasing. The surface layer model was quoted to explain these phenomena in our system and experimentally confirmed. The connectivity parameter of modified cube model of composite was calculated from the dielectric constant variation as their particle size. The connectivity parameter X and Y were 77.8% and 98.9% respectively. It means that the barium titanate particle distribution in composite nearly approach to the parallel mode. It was experimentally confirmed that the surface layer has low dielectric and nonferroelectric properties. Dielectric constant and thickness of surface layer were calculated from the equivalent circuit of composite.

  • Barium titanate (BaTiO3) is one of the most important dielectric materials for the electronic devices, such as MLCC (Multilayer Ceramic Capacitor). The thickness of the dielectric thin film in MLCC has become thinner and reached about 0.8 ${\mu}m$. Further down sizing is required for the higher performance. For this reason, we should take into account for the size effect of Barium titanate powders. In this study, we demonstrated that size effect for BaTiO3 (0.2 ~ 0.5 ${\mu}m$, hydrothermal BT) could be estimates by using dielectric properties analysis together with the powder properties.

  • MLCCs are used broadly in electronic industry like smart phone and TV. Although they are fabricated in small size and have high capacitance, there are acoustic noise problems to reduce comfort of user. Acoustic noise results from linear piezoelectricity and nonlinear electrostriction of $BaTiO_3$ in MLCC and there are some researches on MLCC vibration under AC electric field. When only AC electric field without DC bias is applied to MLCC, fundamental frequency response is affected by piezoelectricity and second-harmonic frequency response shows electrostrictive vibration. In this study we get vibration shape of MLCC under AC electric field for each frequency and analysis on the mechanism of MLCC vibration affected by piezoelectricity and electrostriction.

Thermal Shock Behavior of Barium Titanate Ceramics

  • Post-firing process of electronic ceramic, such as electroding and encapsultion with resin, often causes damage by thermal shock. The thermal shock behavior of $BaTiO_3$ ceramics was investigated by the down-quench test, where the relative strength retained is determined after the sample is quenched from an elevated temperature into a fixed temperature bath. The critical temperature drop, $\DeltaTc$, was evaluated for three kinds of sintered $BaTiO_3$ ceramics, which were formed by extrustioin, uniaxial pressing using granules, and uniaxial pressing using powders. A drastic loss in strength caused by microcracking was observed for the specimens quenched with $\DeltaT\geq150^{\circ}C$. This concentp can be adopted as a method of the quality control by monitoring the sudden drop of the strength of capacitor products after each exposure to heat.

Theoretical Aspects of PTC Thermistors

  • The discovery of ferroelectric barium titanate (BaTiO$_3$) in 1942 began the present era of dielectrics-based electronic ceramics. Ferroelectric barium titanate has a high dielectric constant and after the recognition of BaTiO$_3$ as a new ferroelectric compound, various attractive electrical properties have been extensively studied and reported. Since then, pioneering work on valence-compensated semiconduction led to the discovery of the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of the resistance effect found in doped BaTiO$_3$. Significant progress has since followed with respect to understanding the PTC phenomena, advancing materials capabilities, and developing devices for sensor and switching applications. In this paper, the theoretical aspects of the various PTC models are discussed and the future trends of practical applications for PTC devices are briefly mentioned.

$Sb_2O_3$와 ZnO를 첨가한 Barium Titanate의 유전성 (Dielectric Properties of Barium Titanate with $Sb_2O_3$ and ZnO)

  • The dielectric properties of $BaTiO_3$ containing 0~0.3mol% and ZnO respectively as additives were investigated as a function of temperature from $25^{\circ}C$ to 14$0^{\circ}C$ and frequency from 24 KHz to 15MHz. The density of sintered $BaTiO_3$ was increased with addition of increasing to 0.15mol% amounts of $Sb_2O_3$ and the dielectric constant was also increased. This is due to space charge polarization with Ba vacancies. Above 0.15mol% $Sb_2O_3$ the density was decreased and the dielectric constant was also decreased due to occuring the discharge through voids. The density of sintered $BaTiO_3$ was decreased with addition of increasing to 0.15mol% amounts of ZnO and the dielectric constant was decreased due to occuring the discharge through voids. Above 0.15mol% ZnO the density was increased and the dielectric constant was also increased.

  • Sol-gel processing of $BaTiO_3$ ceramics doped with La(0.01~1.00 at.%) were prepared from metal barium, titanium n-butoxide and lanthanum iso-propoxide. Characterization of the sol-gel-derived powder using XRD, SEM is also reported. The obtained results showed that insulator to semiconductor transition for highly donor-doped barium titanate was closely related to the incorporation of donor into the grains and to the resultant grain size, which were significantly affected by the sinterability of $BaTiO_3$ powders and sintering conditions used.
