  • A great deal of attention is focused on coupled Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical (THM) behavior of multiphase porous media in diverse geo-mechanical and geo-environmental areas. This paper presents general governing equations for coupled THM processes in unsaturated porous media. Coupled partial differential equations are derived from 3 mass balances equations (solid, water, and air), energy balance equation, and force equilibrium equation. Finite element code is developed from the Galerkin formulation and time integration of these governing equations for 4 main variables (displacement $\underline{u}$, gas pressure $P_g$, liquid pressure $P_l$), and temperature T). The code is validated with theoretical solutions for linear material with simple boundary conditions.

  • In this paper, the $(\frac{G'}{G})$-expansion method is used to construct new exact travelling wave solutions of some nonlinear evolution equations. The travelling wave solutions in general form are expressed by the hyperbolic functions, the trigonometric functions and the rational functions, as a result many previously known solitary waves are recovered as special cases. The $(\frac{G'}{G})$-expansion method is direct, concise, and effective, and can be applied to man other nonlinear evolution equations arising in mathematical physics.

  • this work is given a new pseudoniverse matrix method for balancing chemical equations. Here offered method is founded on virtue of the solution of a Diophantine matrix equation by using of a Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse matrix. The method has been tested on several typical chemical equations and found to be very successful for the all equations in our extensive balancing research. This method, which works successfully without any limitations, also has the capability to determine the feasibility of a new chemical reaction, and if it is feasible, then it will balance the equation. Chemical equations treated here possess atoms with fractional oxidation numbers. Also, in the present work are introduced necessary and sufficient criteria for stability of chemical equations over stability of their extended matrices.

  • Monthly streanflow of watersheds is one of the most important elements for the planning, design, and management of water resources development projects, e.g., determination of storage requirement of reservoirs and control of release-water in lowflow rivers. Modeling of longterm runoff is theoretically based on water-balance analysis for a certain time interval. The effect of the casual factors of rainfall, evaporation, and soil-moisture storage on streamflow might be explained by multiple regression analysis. Using the basic concepts of water-balance and regression analysis, it was possible to develop a generalized model called the Regionalized Regression Model for Monthly Streamflow in Korean Watersheds. Based on model verification, it is felt that the model can be reliably applied to any proposed station in Korean watersheds to estimate monthly streamflow for the planning, design, and management of water resources development projects, especially those involving irrigation. Modeling processes and properties are summarized as follows; 1. From a simplified equation of water-balance on a watershed a regression model for monthly streamflow using the variables of rainfall, pan evaporation, and previous-month streamflow was formulated. 2. The hydrologic response of a watershed was represented lumpedly, qualitatively, and deductively using the regression coefficients of the water-balance regression model. 3. Regionalization was carried out to classify 33 watersheds on the basis of similarity through cluster analysis and resulted in 4 regional groups. 4. Prediction equations for the regional coefficients were derived from the stepwise regression analysis of watershed characteristics. It was also possible to explain geographic influences on streamflow through those prediction equations. 5. A model requiring the simple input of the data for rainfall, pan evaporation, and geographic factors was developed to estimate monthly streamflow at ungaged stations. The results of evaluating the performance of the model generally satisfactory.

  • The global balance model is applied to investigate the transient behavior of the electron density and temperature in helicon plasmas. The power absorption calculated from the solutions of the Maxwell equations is used in solving the power balance equation. A balance model for the neutral gas is also considered to fins its density self-consistently. It is turned out that the numerical results reasonably explain consequences of the ion pumping effect including the occurrence of two distinct modes of pulsed helicon discharge which have been observed experimentally. The behavior of the discharge parameters are fond to be primarily dependent on the power absorption and the gas flow rate, but the pressure controls the electron density and temperature of the final steady state as well as the transient state even with the same flow rate. Finally, it is shown that the electron density virtually the linear relationship between the density and the magnetic field is retained for a higher pressure when the effect of the ion pumping is negligible.

  • This paper presents a technique that can obtain an optimal solution for the Security-Constrained Economic Dispatch (SCED) problems using the Interior Point Method (IPM) while taking into account of the power flow constraints. The SCED equations are formulated by using only the real power flow equations from the optimal power flow. Then an algorithm is presented that can linearize the SCED equations based on the relationships among generation real power outputs, loads, and transmission losses to obtain the optimal solutions by applying the linear programming (LP) technique. The objective function of the proposed linearization algorithm are formulated based on the fuel cost functions of the power plants. The power balance equations utilize the Incremental Transmission Loss Factor (ITLF) corresponding to the incremental generation outputs and the line constraints equations are linearized based on the Generalized Generation Distribution Factor (GGDF). Finally, the application of the Primal Interior Point Method (PIPM) for solving the optimization problem based on the proposed linearized objective function is presented. The results are compared with the Simplex Method and the promising results ard obtained.

  • Estimates of annual actual evapotranspiration are needed in water balance studies, water resources management projects, and many different types of hydrologic studies. This study validated a set of 5 empirical equations of estimating annual actual evapotranspiration with climate data on 11 watersheds, and evaluated the further applicability of these forms in estimating annual runoff on watershed level. Five empirical equations generally overestimated annual evapotranspiration, with relative errors ranging $3.3\%$ to $47.2\%$. The results show that Schreiber formula can be applicable in determining annual evapotranspiration in sub-humid region that is classified by aridity index, while Zhang equation gave better results than the remaining methods in humid region. The mean differences for annual evapotranspiration bias over 11 watersheds are Zhang, Schreiber, Budyko, Pike, and Ol'dekop formula from lowest to highest. The empirical equations provide a practical tool to help water resources managers in estimating regional water resources on ungauged large watershed.

  • Recently, HID lamps have been considered as important in regard to the trend of energy saving, and increasingly and diversely used in various ways. This paper will show the simulating models concerning high-pressure arc discharge system directly applicable for its design and manufacture, and analyze its various characteristics. For warm-up characteristics, the evaporating process of inner atoms is described in terms of second-order differential equation: for the thermal conduction from are axis to discharge wall and outer bulb, its transfer process is introduced according to five first-order differential equations. Under the steady state satisfying LTE, the time-variant characteristics are suggested by means of time-dependent energy balance equation derived from fluid equations, approximation of radiation energy and material functions in the discharge tube. The simulating models concerning these equations are then applied for high-pressure mercury lamp.

  • The effects of preheating the gas stream on deposition characteristics of ultrafine $SiO_2$ particles were investigated theoretically. The model equations such as mass and energy balance equations and aerosol dynamic equations were solved to predict the particle growth and deposition. The gas temperatures, $SiCl_4$ concentrations, $SiO_2$ particle volumes, $SiO_2$ particle sizes and deposition efficiencies of $SiO_2$ particles were calculated for various preheating temperatures. As the preheater setting temperature increases, the $SiO_2$ particle size distribution becomes more uniform, because the effect of $SiCl_4$ diffusion decreases.

  • Characteristics of lifted flames in axisymmetric laminar coflow jets have been investigated experimentally. Approximate equations for velocity and concentration with virtual origins have been proposed to analyze the behavior of flames in coflow jets. Measuring Rayleigh intensity to investigate the concentration field. proposed approximate equations were confirmed. By using the results of OH PLIF, direct photography and Rayleigh scattering measurement, it is shown that the locations of maximum intensity in direct photography coincide with the tribrachial points in axisymmetric jets and the tribrachial points travel on the stoichiometric contour. For coflow jets, the experimental results of liftoff height have been successfully correlated with nozzle exit velocity using predicted behavior from proposed approximated equations. These results substantiate the stabilization mechanism in coflow jet is based on the balance between flame propagation speed and axial flow velocity, same as for the free jets.
