Seasonal fluctuation and vertical distribution of Paraphysomonas(Chrysophyceae) off the coast near Syowa Station, East Ongul Island, Antarctica: -(Preliminary report)

  • Four species of Paraphysomonas collected from the fast- ice covered area Syowa Station, East Ongul Island ($69^{\circ}00'S,\;39^{\circ}35'$) ,Antarctica occurred in the seawater throughout the year and occasionally in the sea ice. P.. antarctica is distributed to a water depth of 35m at 51.3 during the period from August 1983 to January 1984 and also down to 600m St. 5 in September 1983 at cell concentrations of 300-350 cells/ml. The Paraphysomonas spp. were dominant during the period from July to November 1983 in the area studied. The mode of the occurrence and vertical distribution of Paraphysomonas apparently coresponds to those of the bacteria and orgarnic debris-like matter in the seawater. The main components of the plankton population in the area studied, under ice-covered conditions, are Paraphysomonas, Choanoflagellates and bacteria. This work clarified that Paraphysomonas is one o f the most important bacterivores in the microbial loop of the Antarctic marine ecosystem.

Innate immune response in insects: recognition of bacterial peptidoglycan and amplification of its recognition signal

  • The major cell wall components of bacteria are lipopolysaccharide, peptidoglycan, and teichoic acid. These molecules are known to trigger strong innate immune responses in the host. The molecular mechanisms by which the host recognizes the peptidoglycan of Gram-positive bacteria and amplifies this peptidoglycan recognition signals to mount an immune response remain largely unclear. Recent, elegant genetic and biochemical studies are revealing details of the molecular recognition mechanism and the signalling pathways triggered by bacterial peptidoglycan. Here we review recent progress in elucidating the molecular details of peptidoglycan recognition and its signalling pathways in insects. We also attempt to evaluate the importance of this issue for understanding innate immunity.

하이에너지수수의 생물학적 전처리 (BIOLOGICAL PRETREATMENT OF HIGH ENERGY SORGHUM)

  • 식물체 biomass 에너지 생산, 즉 메탄과 에탄올에서 부딪치는 제일 큰 문제는 식물체의 structural components, 즉 lignocellulose가 자연상태에서 발생하는 lactic acid bacteria에 의해 분해되지 않는데 있다. 이에 structural components의 주성분인 lignocellulose를 분해시키기 위해 여러 가지 처리를 가한 High Energy Sorghum에 C. celluluyticum과 B. succinogenes를 주입하여 그 효과를 이 논문에서 규명하였다. 살균한 High Energy Sorghum에 C. celluluyticum을 주입한 경과 cellobiose가 structural components에 생산되었다. 그러나, 살균처리를 안한 샘플에서는 C. celluluyticum가 lactic acid bacteria와 처리범위 내에서는 효과적으로 경쟁하지 못한 것으로 사료된다. 또, B. succinogenes도 High Energy Sorghum의 structural components를 어느 정도 분해시켰다. B. succinogenes에의한 cellobiose의 degradation에서 glucose와 succinte에 의해 inhibition은 없었다.

  • In order to develop effective manufacturing method and to improve quality of low-salt fermented squid(10% of table salt), we investigated the effects of temperature, salinity and pH on the growth of Staphylococcus xylosus, Micrococcus varians, Pseudomonas diminuta and Pseudomonas D2 isolated from of low-salt fermented squid and the growth characteristics of these bacteria during fermentation were elucidated. All bacteria showed good growth during the process of low-salt fermented squid(pH 6~7 ; concentration of NaCl, 7~10% ; temperature, 7~1$0^{\circ}C$) and their cell numbers increased as fermentation proceeded under the same fermentation condition.

알타리무 재비시 토양미생물제 처리가 수량 및 주요형질에 미치는 영향 (Effects of microbial fertilizers on the yield and major characteristics of altari radish)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of microbial fertilizers on the yield of altari radish, chemical components of plant and soil, and the microbial floras. Six microbial fertilizers, MPK+Husk+Palma, Husk+Palma, MPK+Compost, Compost, Bio livestock cattle system (BLCS) cattle dropping, and Tomi, were used in this experiment. The yield of altari radish was increased in treatments of all microbial fertilizers. The concentration of all chemical components in plant were not significantly different. Whereas the amount of $P_2$$O_{5}$ in soil was increased in Compost treatment, the other components were not significantly different compared with control. The total bacteria and bacilli in soil were increased in Tomi, Husk+Palma, and MPK+Husk+Palma treatments, and actinomycete and fungi were increased in Tomi treatment.

미생물 유기질비료의 시용이 상추의 수량에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Organic Matters Decomposed by Microbial Activity on Yield of Leaf Lettuce Under Protected Cultivation)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of microbial fertilizers on the yields of Leaf lettuce, chemical components of soil, and the microbial floras. Six micriobial fertilizers, MPK+Husk+Palma, Husk+Palma, MPK+Compost, Compost, Bio livestock cattle system(BLCS) cattle dropping, and Tomi, were used. All of the microbial fertilizers were tend to increase yields of Leaf lettuce, especially MPK+Husk+Palma treatment was most effective. In a chemical components of soil, concentrations of K, Mg were increased with Tomi treatment, however, the other concentrations of soil chemical components were not different. In a microbial floras of soil, Tomi, Husk+Palma, and MPK+Husk+Palma treated plots increased in numbers of total bacteria and bacillus. Tomi treated plot increased in numbers of actinomycetes and fungi, also. The other microbial floras of soil were not different, however. The microbial fertilizers may affect the useful microbial floras, therefore, it would be increase yield of Leaf lettuce treated with them.

초피(Zanthoxylum piperitum DC) 과피의 휘발 성분의 항균작용 (Antimicrobial Activity of The Volatile Components from Fruit Peel of Chopi(Zanthoxylum piperitum DC))

  • The volatile components (essential oil) showing antimicrobial activity were extracted from the fruit peel of Zanthoxylum piperitum DC by distillation and separated by thin layer chromatography (TLC). The crude volatile components exhibited antimicrobial activity only at very high concentration. The active fraction obtained by TLC inhibited noticeably the growth of bacteria. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the fraction were 150ppm, 300ppm, and 300ppm against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella enteritidis, respectively. The components in the active fraction were identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to be geranlyl acetate (60.23%), citronellal(36.01%), citronellol(3.77%), geraniol(0.46%), and cumin ldehyde(0.43%).

논과 갯벌과 저수지 토양의 황산염 환원 (Sulfate Reduction of Rice Paddy, Foreshore, and Reservoir Soil)

  • 유기농법과 관행 농법토양, 청정 갯벌과 오염 갯벌토양 그리고 청정 담수와 오염 담수 토양을 이용하여 계절의 변화에 따라 $^{35}SO_4^{-2}$을 이용한 황산염 환원율, 가스크로마토그래피를 이용한 황화수소 생성량, 최적확수 시험법을 이용한 황산염 환원세균의 분포, 공정시험법을 이용한 수분, 암모니아, 총 질소, 총 유기탄소, 총 탄소, 총 무기인, 총 인, 황산염 농도의 토양 성분조사를 실시하였다. 그 결과 황산염 환원율은 황산염의 농도보다 황산염 환원세균의 군집크기와 질소와 인과 같은 토양 성분과 서로 밀접한 관련이 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 그리고 황화수소 생성량은 10월 토양에서 가장 높게 나타났으나, 담수 토양 보다는 높은 황산염 농도를 함유한 갯벌 토양에서 더 높게 나타났고, 청정 지역보다는 오염 지역 토양에서 높은 값을 나타냈다. 따라서 혐기환경의 황산염 환원율과 황화수소 생성량은 황산염 환원세균의 군집과 토양 내 여러 가지 성분 그리고 온도에 의해 영향 받는 것을 확인하였다.

Scientific Analysis of Formulation Theory of Chungpesagan-tang; In vitro Cytotoxicity of Cisplatin Combined with Chungpesagan-tang

  • In vitro cytotoxic activities of cisplatin combined with Chungpesagan-tang or puerarin, which were treated with or without human intestinal bacteria, were measured. When cisplatin was combined with Chungpesagan-tang and its ingredient treated without intestinal bacteria, they did not affect the in vitro cytotoxicity of cisplatin against tumor cell lines. However, when cisplatin was combined with intestinal bacteria-treated Chungpesagan-tang and its ingredients, the cytotoxicities against SNU C4, L1210, A549 and P388 tumor cell lines were synergistically increased. Puerarin, which was isolated from Puerariae Radix, did not show in vitro cytotoxicity. However, its metabolite, daidzein, showed potent cytotoxicity against tumor cell lines and was synergistic by the combined usage of cisplatin. These results suggest that natural glycosides are not only prodrugs which can be transformed to active compounds by intestinal microflora, but the combined usage of cisplatin with natural components, such as daidzein, and herbal medicinal polyprescriptions, such as Chungpesagan-tang, may be a new method for prevention and minimization of the toxicity of cisplatin.

Sensory, Physicochemical and Microbiological Changes in Water-cooked Salted Duck during Storage at 4℃

  • Water-cooked salted ducks were tray-packaged and stored under refrigeration ($4{\pm}1^{\circ}C$) in order to evaluate the quality changes during storage. pH, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), sensory and microbiological analysis were determined at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10 days of storage. pH value and TVB-N (mg N/100 g) varied from $6.47{\pm}0.16$ to $6.69{\pm}0.10$ and from $5.90{\pm}0.93$ to $13.42{\pm}2.46$, respectively. Sensory results indicated that ducks were unacceptable at the 10th day of storage. The predominant spoilage bacteria at the end of the shelf-life were Brochothrix thermosphacta, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and minor components were Enterobacteriaceae, members of Micrococci, yeasts and moulds. Pseudomonads were also detected. Both total bacteria and the various spoilage ones, overall, increased from the initial sampling to the final day.
