IEEE 802.11 무선랜의 성능 향상을 위한 Binary Negative-Exponential Backoff 알고리즘 (Binary Negative-Exponential Backoff Algorithm to Enhance The Performance of IEEE 802.11 WLAN)

  • DCF에서는 백오프 스테이지(backoff stage), 백오프 카운터(backoff counter), 경쟁 윈도우(contention window)의 세 가지 매개변수를 사용하여 충돌이 발생하면 백오프 스테이지를 하나씩 증가시키고 백오프 카운터를 선택하는 범위인 경쟁 윈도우를 두 배씩 증가시키는 이진 지수적인 백오프(BEB : Binary Exponential Backoff) 방식을 사용하여 전송 프레임간의 충돌 발생 가능성을 줄이고 있다. 그러나 무선 자원을 공유하는 단말의 수가 증가 할수록 충돌 발생 가능성이 증가하여 비효율적으로 자원을 사용하는 문제점이 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 무선 자원을 효율적으로 사용하고 무선 랜의 성능을 향상시키기 위해 충돌발생 시 경쟁 윈도우를 최대로 유지하고 전송 성공 시 경쟁 윈도우를 반으로 줄이는 이진 음지수적인 백오프(BNEB : Binary Negative-Exponential Backoff) 방식을 제안하고 IEEE 802.11, 802.11a, 802.11b의 세 가지 표준에 대해서 포화상태 및 정상 트래픽 상태에서의 성능 평가를 수행하였다.

Random Access Method of the Wibro System

  • Random access method for Wibro system is proposed using the Bayesian Technique, which can estimate the number of bandwidth request messages in a frame only based on the number of successful slots. The performance measures such as the maximum average throughput, the mean delay time and the collision ratio are investigated to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The proposed method shows better performance than the binary exponential backoff algorithm used currently.

  • 본 논문은 IEEE 802.16 환경의 레인징 부채널에서 사용된 OFDMA/CDMA slotted ALOHA의 랜덤 재전송의 개선된 backoff 알고리즘을 제안한다. IEEE 802.16 환경에서 기지국은 UL-/DL-MAP을 이용하며 채널 접속을 조정한다는 사실을 활용하여, 본 논문은 처리량 증가, 지연의 편차 감소 그리고 랜덤액세스 프로토콜의 과부하 조건에서 성능 감소율 향상을 위해 현재의 IEEE 802.16 환경을 약간 수정하는 방안을 제안한다. 이 알고리즘은 기본적으로 BS가 충돌이 발생한 단말들의 재전송 확률을 계산하기 위해 backlogged 사용자 수와 arrival rate를 예측한다. 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션은 제안한 알고리즘의 효과를 증명하고 Binary Exponential Backoff 알고리즘과 성능 비교를 위해 수행되었다.

  • Distributed coordination function(DCF) is the primary random access mechanism of IEEE 802.11, which is the basic protocol of wireless LAN based on the CSMA/CA protocol. It enables fast installation with minimal management and maintenance costs and is a very robust protocol for the best effort service in wireless medium. The current DCF, however, is known to be unsuitable for real-time applications such as voice message transmission. In this paper, we focus on the performance issues of IEEE 802.11 which accommodate the prioritized messages. Existing results use the initial window size and backoff window-increasing factor as tools to handle the priority of the messages. Instead, we introduce a novel scheme which chooses the backoff timer with arbitrary probabilities. By this, one can greatly reduce the backoff delay of the lower priority messages without degrading the performance of higher priority.

Performance Evaluation of X-MAC/BEB Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks

  • This paper proposes an X-MAC/BEB protocol that runs a binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm on top of an X-MAC protocol to save more energy by reducing collision, especially in densely populated wireless sensor networks (WSNs). X-MAC, a lightweight asynchronous duty cycle medium access control (MAC) protocol, was introduced for spending less energy than its predecessor, B-MAC. One of X-MAC 's conspicuous technique is a mechanism to allow senders to promptly send their data when their receivers wake up. X-MAC, however, has no mechanism to deal with sudden traffic fluctuations that often occur whenever closely located nodes simultaneously diffuse their sense data. To precisely evaluate the impact of the BEB algorithm on X-MAC, this paper builds an analytical model of X-MAC/BEB that integrates the BEB model with the X-MAC model. The analytical and simulation results confirmed that X-MAC/BEB outperformed X-MAC in terms of throughput, delay, and energy consumption, especially in congested WSNs.

Fairness CSMA/CA MAC Protocol for VLC Networks

  • This paper presents a fair MAC protocol based on the CSMA/CA algorithm in visible light communication (VLC) networks. The problem of bandwidth sharing among differentiated priority in VLC networks can be solved by using number of backoff time and backoff exponent parameters with AIFS. The proposed algorithm can achieve fair allocation of the bandwidth resource among differentiated priority. The two dimension Markov chain is assisted for analyzing the proposed mechanism about throughput and delay metrics. Numerical results show that our proposed algorithm improves the fairness among different traffic flows.

Design and Evaluation of a Contention-Based High Throughput MAC with Delay Guarantee for Infrastructured IEEE 802.11WLANs

  • This paper proposes a complete solution of a contention-based medium access control in wireless local networks to provide station level quality of service guarantees in both downstream and upstream directions. The solution, based on the mature distributed coordination function protocol, includes a new fixed contention window backoff scheme, a tuning procedure to derive the optimal parameters, a super mode to mitigate the downstream bottleneck at the access point, and a simple admission control algorithm. The proposed system guarantees that the probability of the delay bound violation is below a predefined threshold. In addition, high channel utilization can be achieved at the same time. The numerical results show that the system has advantages over the traditional binary exponential backoff scheme, including efficiency and easy configuration.

Proportional Backoff Scheme for Data Services in TDMA-based Wireless Networks

  • This paper proposes a backoff control scheme for guaranteeing fair packet transmissions in TDMA wireless networks. In order to maximize the system performance, the number of packets transmitted in a frame should be kept at a proper level. In the proposed scheme, the base station calculates the packet transmission probability according to the offered loads and then broadcasts to all the mobile stations. Mobile stations attempt to transmit a packet with the received probability. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can offer better system throughput and delay performance than the conventional one regardless of the offered loads.

  • In this paper, under saturated traffic condition in a single-hop wireless sensor network, we present an analytic model that evaluates the performance of asynchronous MAC protocol which uses a preamble technique. Our model considers the impact of several important factors such as sleep cycle, the backoff mechanism and the number of contending nodes. After obtaining the cumulative backoff time of a sending node and expected delay of a receiving node, an iterative algorithm is presented for calculating the performance measures such as expected energy consumption usage per packet and latency. Simulation results show that the proposed analytic model can accurately estimate the performance measures under saturated traffic conditions.

  • 본 논문에서는 무선 센서 네트워크에서 지연시간에 민감한 데이터를 빠르게 전송하기 위하여 채널 상태를 고려하여 경로를 선택하는 라우팅 기법을 제안하였다. 실시간 전송을 위한 기존의 방식들은 단순히 전파 지연시간이 짧은 경로 혹은 홉 수가 적은 경로를 선택한다. 또한, 무선 매체의 특성에 따라 링크 에러율을 기반으로 하여 실시간 전송 경로를 선정하는 알고리즘도 제안되었다. 하지만, 링크 에러율이 영향을 미치는 전파 지연시간과 재전송 타임아웃 시간은 채널을 검사하고 백오프하는 시간 보다 짧다. 따라서, 본 논문에서 제안하는 기법은 채널 백오프 비율을 기반으로 하여 채널 사용과 패킷 송신에 소요되는 시간을 추정하였다. 소스 노드는 가장 짧은 지연시간을 가진 경로를 실시간 트래픽을 위한 전송 경로로 선택하였다. 링크 에러율과 채널 백오프 비율에 따른 실험을 통하여 제안 방식이 종단 간의 데이터 전달 속도를 향상시킨다는 사실을 확인하였다.
