  • Backlash is common in mechanical and hydraulic systems and severely limits overall system performance. In this paper, the development of an adaptive control scheme for systems with unknown backlash is presented. An adaptive backlash inverse based controller is applied to a plant that has an unknown backlash in its input. The harmful effects of backlash are presented. Compensation for backlash by adding a discrete adaptive backlash inverse structure and the gradient-type adaptive algorithm, which provides the estimated backlash parameters, are also presented. The supposed adaptive backlash control algorithms are applied to an aircraft with unknown backlash in the actuator of control surfaces. Simulation results show that the proposed compensation scheme improves the tracking performance of systems with backlash.

  • Minimizing the backlash of gears and reducers is important for their proper and precise functioning. In this study, an automatic backlash measuring system was developed for the mass production and quality control of a military-grade reducer. The developed automatic backlash measurement system eliminates human error during the backlash measurement process. It also reduces the manufacturing time and digitizes the backlash number. The system was tested for an aircraft machine gun control reducer that required low-torque and high-precision conditions. The test results show that the torque range was 0.820-4.788 Nm. The maximum torque error is less than 0.231 N·m at 2.943 N·m, and 1.2 arcmin of the maximum backlash error with ± 0.3 arcmin of repeatability. The developed system satisfies all required conditions: torque of 1-3 Nm, torque accuracy within ± 0.5 N·m, and backlash accuracy of ± 3 arcmin.

  • In rotating systems, backlash imposed limitations on the quality of control. System with gear is an example where this is a well-known limitation. In order to increase the controller performance, we design a fuzzy system to compensate the backlash effect. We prove that under certain conditions the fuzzy compensator guarantees that the backlash output converges to the desired trajectory. Simulation results show that the fuzzy compensator is robust to the backlash parameter.

  • The small gear reductioner noise is caused by gear accuracy, assembling errors, and gear backlash. This main study is an investigation on noise quality of the small gear reductioner through the change of gear backlash. In this study included Gear design parameters related the small gear reductioner, the knowledge of rattle noise related gear backlash, and the experimentation results of the small reductioner noise through change of gear backlash. At last, this study propose the least method of the small gear reductioner noise that is caused by suitable existence of gear backlash.

  • An anti-backlash gear was developed to reduce the rattle noise generated from the gearbox of a direct-engine PTO driveline of agricultural tractors under idling. A pair of gears using the anti-backlash gear as driven part was modeled and verified. Using the verified model, a computer simulation was conducted to investigate the effects of design parameters of the anti-backlash gear on the reduction of rattle noise. The optimum values of the design parameters were also determined by the computer simulation. The optimized anti-backlash gear was then manufactured and installed on the experimental PTO driveline for the performance test. Measurement of rattle noise was made to evaluate its performance before and after the driven gear of the PTO gearbox was replaced by the optimized anti-backlash gear. Results of the study were as follows: The optimum values of the design parameters, spring constant and deformation, may be determined by a relationship: $$k{\ge}\frac{4364.7}{150{\delta}-23.564}$$ The optimized anti-backlash gear reduced the rattle noise maximally by 16.9 dBA. This concluded that it would be most effective to use the optimized anti-backlash gear to eliminate the rattle noise in the PTO driveline.

  • In this paper, an extended volumetric error model considering backlash in a three-axis machine tool was proposed and utilized for calculating the volumetric error of the machine tool at any position in three-dimensional workspace. Backlashes are interrelated; i.e. the angular backlash affects the straightness errors which then affect talc calculated squareness errors. Therefore, a new concept was introduced to define the backlash of squareness errors to incorporate the backlash of squareness error into the volumetric error, and the characteristics of the backlash of squareness error were investigated. The effects of backlash errors were assessed, by experiments. for 21 geometric errors of a machine tool. The backlash error was shown to be one of the systematic errors of a machine tool. And a generalized volumetric error model formulator for three-axis machine tools was developed, which allowed us to formulate machine tool synthesis error models far all possible machine tool configurations only with machine tool topology information. Based on these volumetric error model and model formulator, a computer-aided volumetric error analysis system was developed for a three-axis machine tool in this paper. Then the volumetric error at an arbitrary position can be obtained, and displayed in a three-dimensional graphic form.

  • Main sources of the vibration in gear driving system are transmission error and backlash. Transmission error is the difference of the rotation between driving and driven gear due to tooth deformation and profile error. Vibro-impacts induced by backlash between meshing gears lead to excessive vibration and noise in many geared rotation systems. Nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the gear driving system due to transmi- ssion error and backlash are investigated. Transmission error is calculated for spur gear. Nonlinear equation of motion for the gear driving system is developed with the calculated transmission error and backlash. Numerical analysis of the equation and the experimental results show the existence of meshing frequency, superharmonic compon- ents. Instability of the gear driving motion is found on the basis of Mathieu equation. Rattle vibration due to backlash is also discussed on the basis if nonlinear jump phenomenon.

  • In this correspondence, an new approach to design a fuzzy controller for system with uncertain output backlash to have good tracking performance is presented. Without using a compensation mechanism or backlash inverse, the fuzzy control mechanism is designed to implicitly compensate the delay effect arising from an uncertain output backlash and to make the output backlash stable without limit cycles. The proposed method designs a model-based fuzzy controller for a one-input one-output linear plant with output backlash. The effectiveness of the designed fuzzy controller is illustrated by the simulation.

  • The paper investigates the change of frequency response characteristics on two-stage gear reduction servo system according to the variation of backlash amount of each gear reduction stage, under the condition that the backlash of total system is constant. It is shown that the frequency response characteristics of the system heavily depend on the contribution ratio which is defined as a ratio of the first backlash amount to the total backlash. It is also found that there is an optimal backlash combination to maximize the bandwidth of two-stage gear reduction servo system when the allowable total backlash is determined.
