  • In agricultural households cultivating vegetables and fruits, the use of various pesticides to protect crops from diseases and pests or to control weeds is widely practiced enhancing quality and productivity. However, pesticides can pose a threat to consumer health by remaining on the food surface or migrating into the food interior. Households commonly peel off skins, wash with water, or use chemical methods to remove foreign substances including residual pesticides on the food surface. In this study, we measured the washing rate by comparing the pesticide concentrations before and after washing in the leafy vegetable perilla leaves and the fruits strawberries and apples, which were intentionally exposed to pesticides. We compared washing rates using tap water, a baking soda solution, and a commercially available food-specific cleaning solution. The target pesticides for analysis were azoxystrobin, bifenthrin, boscalid, difenoconazole, flubendiamide, and indoxacarb, and the residual pesticide analysis was performed using GC-MS/MS or LC-MS/MS. The removal rates of pesticides were highest with the food-specific cleaner, followed by baking soda and tap water in order.

  • Anthracnose crown rot (ACR), caused by Colletotrichum fructicola, is a serious disease of strawberry in Korea. The primary inoculums of ACR were symptomless strawberry plants, plant debris, and other host plants. To effectively control anthracnose in symptomless transplanted strawberries, it is necessary to use disease-free plants, detect the disease early, and apply a fungicide. Therefore, in 2010 and 2011, we evaluated the efficacy of pre-plant fungicide dips by using strawberry transplants infected by C. fructicola for the control of anthracnose. Dipping plants in prochloraz-Mn for 10 min before planting was most effective for controlling anthracnose in symptomless strawberry plants and resulted in more than 76% control efficacy. Azoxystrobin showed a control efficacy of over 40%, but plants treated with pyraclostrobin, mancozeb and iminoctadine tris showed high disease severity. The control efficacy of the dip treatment with prochloraz-Mn did not differ with temperature and time. Treatment with prochloraz-Mn for more than an hour caused growth suppression in strawberry plants. Therefore, the development of anthracnose can be effectively reduced by dipping strawberry plants for 10 min in prochloraz-Mn before planting.

  • This survey was conducted to monitor the current status of pesticide residues in imported agricultural products circulated in Gwangju, 2005. A total of 108 samples was analyzed by multiresidue method. Of these samples, 32 were citrus fruits, 60 were tropical fruits and grapes, and 16 were vagetables. The origin was Philippine for 39 samples, U.S.A. for 36, China for 12, New Zealand for 11, Chile for 6, etc. The overall rate of detections was 30.6% and no samples had violative residues. Of citrus fruits,20 samples (62.5%) had residues and the residues were thiabendazole, imazalil, chlorpyrifos, etc. Of tropical fruits and grapes, 13 samples (12.0%) had residues and the residues were azoxystrobin, chlorpyrifos, carbendazim, captan, etc. 16 of vagetables had no detectable pesticide residues. Thiabendazole (71% in oranges and 56% in grapefruits) and imazalil (50% in oranges) were found in citrus fruits, which were frequently used as post-harvest pesticides. And azoxystrobin which is one of strobilurin fungicides, was often detected in mango, tropical fruit(27%).

  • The reduction factor of pesticides is getting more crucial these days. However, most studies have focused on the relationship between pesticides and commodities. This study was conducted to examine the pesticide reduction factor based on their physicochemical properties. Five pesticides were selected among 288 insecticides by considering the presence of an ionizable group, the log P, and boiling points. The correlation coefficients between log P and removal by tap water, 5% acetic acid, 20% ethanol, and 0.15% detergent were -0.835 (p<0.001), 0.336 (p=0.221), 0.659 (p<0.01), and -0.939 (p<0.001), respectively. Removal by blanching was affected by log P as it showed a positive correlation with a log P of 0.620 (p<0.05). Removal by frying showed a strong negative correlation with a log P of -0.913 (p<0.001). The results suggest that removing pesticides was affected largely by log P and by vapor pressure during cooking, whereas during washing, the matrix of the food also contributed to the reduction.

  • For the effective control of pepper anthracnose, in vitro antifungal activities of 13 commercial fungicides were tested on spore germination, mycelial growth, and sporulation of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, anthracnose fungus. Among them, captan, chlorothalonil, dithianon, fluazinam and folpet completely inhibited the spore germination of C. gloeosporioides at the concentration of 0.8 ${\mu}g/ml$. They were followed by mancozeb and propineb, showing more than 80% inhibition of spore germination at 20 ${\mu}g/ml$. The mycelial growth of C. gloeosporioides was strongly inhibited by fluazinam and nuarimol. Except for nuarimol, most of the fungicides represented more antifungal activity on the spore germination than the mycelial growth of C. gloeosporioides. Azoxystrobin and metominostrobin, Strobilurin fungicides, were only moderately active against the spore germination and the mycelial growth of C. gloeosporioides, but they were effective antisporulant against C. gloeosporioides. From these results, control of pepper anthracnose will have achieved by preventive spray of the commercial fungicides.

  • Control of white rot which is one of the most serious apple diseases in Korea has mainly relied on periodical spray of protective fungicides. As the main inoculum source of the disease is pycnidiospores produced in the warts formed on affected stems of apple tree, it can be conceivable that inhibition of spore production might be an effective means for controlling the disease. Inhibitory efficacy of eight selected fungicides against sporulation of the fungus was assessed by counting the number of spores produced at detached warts treated with the fungicides of recommended dilution. They showed diverse effect on sporulation. Carbendazim and azoxystrobin suppressed sporulation almost completely, the former irreversively. Thiram and folpet promoted sporulation as producing much more number of spores than untreated control. Others showed almost no effect on sporulation. Effects of suppression and promotion in the sporulation shown by the fungicides on the control of white rot were examined by incidences of disease and infection at the plots adopted the spray programs of which the fungicide at late May was substituted by carbendazim, azoxystrobin, folpet and thiram, respectively. Disease incidence and infection frequency at the plots sprayed former two chemicals which suppressed sporulation were much lower than those of the plots adopted latter two chemicals and untreated plot at which the fungicide spray was skipped at that time. These facts were reconfirmed in the experiments conducted with carbendazim and thiram, in which 100 fruits were bagged just prior to each spray from late May to late July for elucidating the effect of the two fungicides on the action of subsequent ones. Disease incidence and infection frequency on the fruit bagged just prior to each spray were gradually increased as the seasons going on. The increase rate at the carbendazim plot was much lower than that of thiram. Especially, the fruit infected till late July at the carbendazim plot were almost completely cured by the three fungicides, iminoctadine-triacetate, tebuconazole and samzinwang, a combined formular of iminoctadine-triacetate and difenoconazole, sprayed at late July and hence. In thiram plot, infected fruit were also cured by the 3 fungicides but not remarkable. From these results, it can be concluded that control efficiency of white rot can be greatly enhanced by selecting the fungicide capable of suppress the sporulation of white rot fungus at the season when the mass dispersal of spores is not initiated.

  • Post-harvest fungicide residue was measured in citrus fruits. Samples were collected from local markets in Seoul and analyzed using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS). LC-MS results were validated for the assay of pesticides by using linearity, accuracy, precision, and limits of detection and quantification. The linearity in the concentration ranged from 0.005 to 2.0 mg/kg ($R^2$ >0.999). Sample recoveries ranged from 80.2 to 98.3% with relative standard deviations below 4.0% for spiking levels from 0.01 to 1.0 mg/kg. The limits of detection ranged between 0.002 and 0.008 mg/kg, and the limits of quantification ranged between 0.006 and 0.027 mg/kg. The highest residue levels for carbendazim, thiabendazole, imazalil, and azoxystrobin in citrus fruits were 0.541, 0.958, 0.721, and 0.052 mg/kg, respectively. The pesticide residues found in citrus fruits were blow maximum residue limits (MRLs) and are not a serious public health problem.

  • Powdery mildew caused by Podosphaera fusca is one of the most important diseases in leafy lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). Since the disease has been a threat to safe cultivation of leafy lettuce, its control methods have to develop to produce good quality of lettuce for farmer and consumer. Occurrence of lettuce powdery mildew is increasing more and more due to continuous cultivation of lettuce all through the year, non-removal of diseased plant parts of lettuce, spray of inadequate fungicides by mistaken acknowledge of lettuce powdery mildew for lettuce downy mildew, etc. The control effect of five fungicides against lettuce powdery mildew was examined in a plastic greenhouse located in Suwon. When fungicides were sprayed three times at 10 days-intervals in the early stage of occurrence of powdery mildew, the incidence of powdery mildew in the plants treated with kresoxim-methy SC, azoxystrobin SC, Ampelomyces quisqualis AQ94013 WP, Paenibacillus polymyxa AC-1 SC and Bacillus subtilis Y 1336 WP was 0.7%, 0.7%, 26.0%, 36.7% and 42.0%, respectively, whereas the incidence of non-treated control was 55.3% on eight days after final application. Phytotoxicity of five fungicides tested was not observed in lettuce seedling plants.

  • In order to establish the guidance of management and safe use hazard substance, trend analysis of hazard substance in/on agricultural products reported by press for 5 years (2005-2009) was performed. Data for the analysis collected from the articles about hazard substances from web portals, newspapers and so on. The mostly detected harmful factors in/on agricultural products were pesticides residue and heavy metals by the reports by press for last 5 years. The number of detected pesticides was slightly increased from 14 to 34 through the passage of time but the number of cases reported by press was not increased. On the other hand, the number of accidents and reports related to heavy metals were highly increased from 3 to 13 and 42 to 112, respectively. 65 pesticides including chlorpyrifos were detected in domestic agricultural products for the 5 years. Frequently detected pesticides were chlorpyrifos, endosulfan, carbendazim, azoxystrobin, and procymidone. Pesticide residues were repeatedly detected on green vegetables such as a green perilla leaf, a lettuce, a leek, and spinach among crops.
