  • Axisymmetric compressible flow field induced by shock diffraction from a finite cone is investigated with experimental and computational methods. Double-exposure holographic interferograms show ima ges of the density field integrated along the light path. Using the sight-integrated density based on the Able transformation, the axisymmetric computational results are compared qualitatively with the experiment. In the present paper, we observed some distinguishing flow physics: the fault structure of vortex ring, the shock-vortex interaction, and the morphological transformation of shock waves.

  • An analytic approach is attempted to predict the amplification of turbulence in compressible flows experiencing one-dimensional and axisymmetric bulk dilatation. The variations of vortex radius and vorticity are calculated, and then the amplification of turbulence is obtained from them by tracking three representative vortices. For a one-dimensionally compressed flow, the present analysis slightly underestimates the amplification of velocity fluctuations and turbulent kinetic energy, relative to that of rapid distortion theory in the solenoidal limit. For an axisymmetrically distorted flow, the amplification of velocity fluctuations and turbulent kinetic energy depend not only on the density ratio but also on the ratio of streamwise mean velocities, which represents streamwise vortex contraction/stretching. In all flows considered, the amplification of turbulence is dictated by the mean density ratio. In the axisymmetric flow, streamwise vortex stretching/contraction, however, alters the amplification slightly.

  • The flow in the draft tube cone of Francis turbines operated at partial discharge is a complex hydrodynamic phenomenon where an incoming steady axisymmetric swirling flow evolves into a three-dimensional unsteady flow field with precessing helical vortex (also called vortex rope) and associated pressure fluctuations. The paper addresses the following fundamental question: is it possible to compute the circumferentially averaged flow field induced by the precessing vortex rope by using an axisymmetric turbulent swirling flow model? In other words, instead of averaging the measured or computed 3D velocity and pressure fields we would like to solve directly the circumferentially averaged governing equations. As a result, one could use a 2D axi-symmetric model instead of the full 3D flow simulation, with huge savings in both computing time and resources. In order to answer this question we first compute the axisymmetric turbulent swirling flow using available solvers by introducing a stagnant region model (SRM), essentially enforcing a unidirectional circumferentially averaged meridian flow as suggested by the experimental data. Numerical results obtained with both models are compared against measured axial and circumferential velocity profiles, as well as for the vortex rope location. Although the circumferentially averaged flow field cannot capture the unsteadiness of the 3D flow, it can be reliably used for further stability analysis, as well as for assessing and optimizing various techniques to stabilize the swirling flow. In particular, the methodology presented and validated in this paper is particularly useful in optimizing the blade design in order to reduce the stagnant region extent, thus mitigating the vortex rope and expending the operating range for Francis turbines.

  • An axisymmetric jet is forced with two helical fundamental waves of identical frequency spinning in opposite directions and an additional axisymmetric sub harmonic wave. The subharmonic component rapidly grows downstream from subharmonic resonance with the fundamental, significantly depending on the initial phase difference. The variations of the subharmonic amplitude with the initial phase difference show cusp-like shapes. The amplification of the sub harmonic results in 'vortex pairing of helical modes'. Furthermore, azimuthal variation of the amplification induces an asymmetric jet cross-section. When the initial subharmonics is imposed with an initial phase difference close to a critical value, the jet-cross section evolves into a three-lobed shape. One lobe is generated by the enhanced vortex pairing and the other two lobes are generated by the delayed vortex pairing. Thus, it is confirmed that the initial phase difference between the fundamental and the subharmonic plays an important role in controlling the jet cross-section.

  • A numerical investigation has been made for flows in an axisymmetric circular cylinder with a rotating cone located at the bottom of the container. The axisymmetric container is completely filled with a viscous fluid. Major parameter for the present research is the vertex angle of the cone, otherwise Reynolds number of fluid and aspect ratio of the vessel is fixed. Main interest is in vortex breakdown of meridional circulation by rotation of the cone with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder. The method to this problem is numerically to integrate momentum and continuity equations on a generalized body fitted grid system. The pattern of vortex breakdown is quite different from that in a right circular cylinder with flat end wall disks. Flow visualization photographs of a preceeding work are compared with the present numerical results.

  • A numerical investigation has been made for flows in an axisymmetric circular cylinder with an impulsively rotating cone located at the bottom of the container. The axisymmetric container is completely filled with a viscous fluid. Major parameter for the present research is only the vertex angle of the cone, otherwise Reynolds number and aspect ratio of the vessel are fixed. Main interest concerns on the vortex breakdown of meridional circulation by impulsive rotation of the cone with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder. Numerical method has been used to integrate momentum and continuity equations on a generalized body-fitted grid system. The pattern of vortex breakdown is quite different from that in a right circular cylinder with flat endwall disks. The flow visualization photograph of the preceeding work by Escudier is compared with the present numerical results and the two results are in good agreements. Also flow data are plotted to gain a deep understanding for the present phenomena of the vortex breakdown. The conclusions of this work are clearly explained by the classical theory of the vortex flows in a finite geometry.

  • Solute transport through a groove is affected by its vortices. Our laboratory and numerical experiments of dye transport through a single axisymmetric groove reveal evidence of enhanced spreading and mixing by the vortex, i.e., a new kind of dispersion called here the vortex dispersion. The uptake and release of contaminants by vortices in porous media is affected by the flow Reynolds number. The larger the flow Reynolds number, the larger is the vortex dispersion, and the larger is the mass-transfer rate between the mobile zone and the vortex. The long known dependence of the mass-transfer rate between the mobile and "immobile" zones in porous media on flow velocity can be explained by the presence of vortices in the "immobile" zone and their uptake and release of contaminants.

  • The angular momentum transport of an idealized axisymmetric vortex in the developing stage was investigated using the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model. The balanced axisymmetric vortex was constructed based on an empirical function for tangential wind, and the temperature, geopotential, and surface pressure were obtained from the balanced equation. The numerical simulation was carried out for 6 days on the f-plane with the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) set as constant. The weak vortex at initial time was intensified with time, and reached the strength of tropical cyclone in a couple of days. The Absolute Angular Momentum (AAM) was transported along with the secondary circulation of the vortex. Total AAM integrated over a cylinder of radius of 2000 km decreased with simulation time, but total kinetic energy increased rapidly. From the budget analysis, it was found that the surface friction is mainly responsible for the decrease of total AAM. Also, contribution of the surface friction to the AAM loss was about 90% while that of horizontal advection was as small as 8%. The trajectory of neutral numerical tracers following the secondary circulation was presented for the Lagrangian viewpoint of the transports of absolute angular momentum. From the analysis using the trajectory of tracers it was found that the air parcel was under the influence of the surface friction continuously until it leaves the boundary layer near the core. Then the air parcel with reduced amount of angular momentum compared to its original amount was transported from boundary layer to upper level of the vortex and contributed to form the anti-cyclone. These results suggest that the tropical cyclone loses angular momentum as it develops, which is due to the dissipation of angular momentum by the surface friction.

  • A numerical simulation of unsteady axisymmetric turbulent flow was performed for a reciprocating engine including port/valve assembly. The governing equations based on a nonorthogonal coordinate formulation with Cartesian velocity components were used and discretised by the finite volume method with non-staggered variable arrangements. The modified $\kappa-\xi$. turbulence model which included the effect of compressibility was used. The results of twodimensional transient calculation for the axisymmetric configuration were compared with the experimental data. Although slightly low rms velocity was predicted compared to the experimental data, predicted velocity distributions at the valve exit and in-cylinder region showed good agreements with the experimental data. The flow at the valve exit was separated at the same valve lift position with the experimental data. Two vortices incylinder region were generated during the initial intake process. The clockwise main vortex became strong and moved upward to the top wall. The counter-clockwise second vortex became weak and stick to the upper left corner of the cylinder. After middle intake process, new vortex adjacent to upper cylinder wall appeared by the piston motion and therefore, the in-cylinder flow was formed into three vortices. The cylinder pressure just before bottom dead center of piston was higher than inlet pressure and then the reverse flow occured at the valve exit. The in-cylinder flow characteristics were strongly dependent on piston motion, but insensitive to valve motion.

  • An axisymmetric submerged body(L=5.6m, Diam=0.53m) is installed in Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT) of KRISO and the nominal and total velocities without and with the propeller in operation, respectively, are measured using Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV). The flow field is nearly axisymmetric except the wake of the supporting strut, and is considered ideal to study the hydrodynamic interaction between the propeller and the oncoming axisymmetric sheared flow. The measured velocity data are then provided to compute the propeller-induced velocity to get the effective velocity, which is defined by subtracting the propeller-induced velocity from the total velocity. We adopted, in computing the induced velocity, two different methods including the vortex lattice method and the vortex tube actuator model to evaluate the resultant effective velocity distribution. To secure a fundamental base of experimental data necessary for the research on the effective wake, we measured the drag of the submerged body, the nominal and total velocity distributions at various axial locations for three different tunnel water speeds.
