  • Axiomatic design offers a scientific base for design in an efficient way. It is well known that it has two axioms: the Independence Axiom and the Information Axiom. Many applications of the Independence Axiom have been published, however, the Information Axiom has been mainly applied to IFR (functional requirement) - 1DP (design parameter) problems except fer a few case studies. This research presents various methods for calculation of information content. Generally, the information content is evaluated by the probability of success. The probability of success is calculated in two ranges: the FR range and the DP range. In the FR range, the graphical method is utilized with uniform distribution of the DP. In the FP range, the integration method is employed. It is noted that any distribution function of the DP can be accommodated in the integration method. The developed method can be applied to a decoupled design with multiple FRs and DPs. The developed method is extended to a coupled design and a design with a hierarchical structure of axiomatic design.

  • It is critical to select an appropriate technology valuation method when the characteristics of a technology and valuation environment are variable. To ensure high quality decision making when selecting a technology valuation method, it is necessary to understand the principles of a good technology valuation method, and define and apply a decision making theory for selecting an optimal method. The authors propose that Axiomatic Design Principles can be applied as a decision making theory. In order to apply Axiomatic Design for this problem, this paper describes four domains(customer, functional, physical, and process domain) and four axioms(independence, information, cost, time axiom) for the decision making process for the optimal technology valuation method. The result of this study will contribute flexibility to the dynamic technology valuation process.

  • Proofs in school mathematics are regarded as the procedures to examine a proposition's truth or falsehood. However, they are not based on an axiomatic system in general. This implies the possible existence of vicious circles in proofs in school mathematics. The concept of proof can be more completely acquired when accompanied with concept of circular reasoning and necessity of axiomatic system. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss on the axiomatic system in school mathematics curriculum. The vicious circle can be found in computing an area of a circle by using definite integral in differentiation/integration part of high school textbooks. This paper will first illustrate this in detail and then offer several comments on the axiomatic methods related to the dissolution of that circular reasoning. To further the discussion, Archimedes' derivation for the area of a circle will be considered next. Finally, several arguments on circular reasoning, local organization, and axiomatic system in school curriculum will be presented at the end of the paper.

  • Polymer materials have a lot of merits including the low cost and the easiness of forming. For these reasons they are widely using at many manufacturing industries. Microcellular foaming process appeared at MIT in 1980s to save a quantity of material and increase mechanical properties. There are many process variables in appling microcellular foaming process to the conventional injection molding process. They can be solved by using Axiomatic Design Method which is very useful design method for designing a new product. Its main character is scientific and analytical. The information about the thickness of cavity plays an important role in making an effective foam. The goal of this research is to design mold system for advance of foaming magnitude with axiomatic design method. There is a relation between the change of cavitys thickness and foaming magnitude made after inserting a gas. R/t is a conception that indicate proportion between radius and thickness of cavity in mold system. By means of SEM observation of side surface of cavity sample, foaming magnitude of polymer in microcellular foaming process is decreasing gradually as the value of R/t is increasing. In this paper, an advanced mold system was presented by mapping the relation between functional requirements and design parameters.

  • In axiomatic approach for design evaluation, even if a mutual relation don't appear physical mapping of high level, it can appear in process mapping of low level through coupled PVs(Process Variables), but we must solve it for correct design evaluation. This paper handle a method for solving of coupled PVs by using axiomatic approach and CBR(Case-Based Reasoning). The methodology of proposal took still more shape through the instance of MCPs(Microcellular Plastics).

  • Axiomatic Design is the one of many useful methods for making a good design. In this method, the independency of Functional Requirements (FRs) is an important property to determine whether the design is good or not. Until now so many designers have decided the independency between FRs by their own decisions. The way depending on inspiration is simple and fast, but it can not be considered as a precise conclusion. Also there are not exact rule that evaluate the quantitative independence between FRs. This paper will show the way to evaluate the quantitative independence of FRs from the comparison between FRs of lower levels, and develop more efficient and objective tool in Axiomatic Design.

  • This paper describes an Axiomatic Design Process enhanced by the Combinative Index that represents combinative strength between function requirements and design parameters. This method combines the advantages of these two methods : 1) Combinative Index that represents combinative strength between function requirements and design parameters so that we clearly understand these information. 2) engineering specifications are categorized into strategies, constraints and Functional Requirements. In this paper, relationship of FR's and DP's is regarded as one in which uncertainty of information are fundamentally involved. In the reduction of problem with uncertainty, we propose an enhanced Axiomatic Design Process using Combinative Index.

  • CD-ROM drive is improved in rotation speed up to 10,000 rpm. But Vibration and Noise are also increased simultaneously more and more. So many attempts are tried to reduce the unexpected effects. Most attempts are not enough to cover the increasement of Noise and Vibration. Merely availed tries are accumulated in many part and it makes the structure complicated. The Axiomatic approach could arrange the order of design and estimate the optimum design in good oder. In Axiomatic Approach, the composition is divided by Customer Requirement, Functional Requirement, Design Parameter and Design Matrix in large portion. This method also could show more effective way to design before making a prototype.

  • Axiomatic Design has been developed as a general design framework during past two decades and TRIZ has been developed for a design tool over 50 years. Axiomatic design is quite excellent in that design should be decoupled. When a design matrix is established, the characteristics of the design are identified according to the coupling properties. If the design is coupled, a decoupling process should be found. However, axiomatic design does not specifically indicate how to decouple a coupled design. In this research, the coupling manner is classified into six patterns. Each pattern could be solved by an appropriate TRIZ module. A table, which matches the coupling pattern and a TRIZ module, is proposed for effective application of the two design theories. The decoupling ideas are proposed by using TRIZ modules. When the number of decoupled designs is more than one, the engineer should select the final idea. The proposed method is applied to practical cases such as a tape feeder and a beam adjuster of the laser marker.

  • To provide more rational design solutions at conceptual design level, axiomatic design method has been applied to solve critical part of a new engineering problem called Mobile Harbor. In the implementation, the Mobile Harbor, a functional harbor system that consists of a vessel with container crane approaches to a container ship anchored in the open sea and establishes a secure mooring between the two vessels to carry out loading and unloading of containers. For this moving harbor system to be able to operate successfully, a reliable and safe strategy to moor and maintain constant distance between the two vessels in winds and waves is required. The design process of automatic ship-to-ship mooring system to satisfy the requirements of establishing and maintaining secure mooring has been managed using axiomatic design principles. Properly defining and disseminating Functional Requirements, clarifying interface requirements between its subsystems, and identifying potential conflict, i.e. functional coupling, at the earliest stage of design as much as possible are all part of what need to be managed in a system design project. In this paper, we discuss the automatic docking system design project under the umbrella of KAIST mobile harbor project to illustrate how the Axiomatic Design process can facilitate design projects for a large and complex engineering system. The solidified design is presented as a result.
