Asymmetric tip clearance in an axial compressor induces pressure and velocity redistributions along the circumferential direction in an axial compressor. This paper presents the mechanism of the flow redistribution due to the asymmetric tip clearance with a simple numerical modeling. The flow field of a rotor of an axial compressor is predicted when an asymmetric tip clearance occurs along the circumferential direction. The modeling results are supported by CFD results not only to validate the present modeling but also to investigate more detailed flow fields. Asymmetric tip clearance makes local flow area and resultant axial velocity vary along the circumferential direction. This flow redistribution 'seed' results in a different flow patterns according to the flow coefficient. Flow field redistribution patterns are largely dependent on the local tip clearance performance at low flow coefficients. However, the contribution of the main flow region becomes dominant while the tip clearance effect becomes weak as the flow coefficient increases. The flow field redistribution pattern becomes noticeably strong if a blockage effect is involved when the flow coefficient increases. The relative flow angle at the small clearance region decreases which result in a negative incidence angle at the high flow coefficient. It causes a recirculation region at the blade pressure surface which results in the flow blockage. It promotes the strength of the flow field redistribution at the rotor outlet. These flow pattern changes have an effect on the blade loading perturbations. The integration of blade loading perturbation from control volume analysis of the circumferential momentum leads to well-known Alford's force. Alford's force is always negative when the flow blockage effects are excluded. However when the flow blockage effect is incorporated into the modeling, main flow effects on the flow redistribution is also reflected on the Alford's force at the high flow coefficient. Alford's force steeply increases as the flow coefficient increases, because of the tip leakage suppression and strong flow redistribution. The predicted results are well agreed to CFD results by Kang and Kang(2006).
Multiple-step beams carrying intermediate lumped masses with/without rotary inertias are widely used in engineering applications, but in the literature for free vibration analysis of such structural systems; Bernoulli-Euler Beam Theory (BEBT) without axial force effect is used. The literature regarding the free vibration analysis of Bernoulli-Euler single-span beams carrying a number of spring-mass systems, Bernoulli-Euler multiple-step and multi-span beams carrying multiple spring-mass systems and multiple point masses are plenty, but that of Timoshenko multiple-step beams carrying intermediate lumped masses and/or rotary inertias with axial force effect is fewer. The purpose of this paper is to utilize Numerical Assembly Technique (NAT) and Differential Transform Method (DTM) to determine the exact natural frequencies and mode shapes of the axial-loaded Timoshenko multiple-step beam carrying a number of intermediate lumped masses and/or rotary inertias. The model allows analyzing the influence of the shear and axial force effects, intermediate lumped masses and rotary inertias on the free vibration analysis of the multiple-step beams by using Timoshenko Beam Theory (TBT). At first, the coefficient matrices for the intermediate lumped mass with rotary inertia, the step change in cross-section, left-end support and right-end support of the multiple-step Timoshenko beam are derived from the analytical solution. After the derivation of the coefficient matrices, NAT is used to establish the overall coefficient matrix for the whole vibrating system. Finally, equating the overall coefficient matrix to zero one determines the natural frequencies of the vibrating system and substituting the corresponding values of integration constants into the related eigenfunctions one determines the associated mode shapes. After the analytical solution, an efficient and easy mathematical technique called DTM is used to solve the differential equations of the motion. The calculated natural frequencies of Timoshenko multiple-step beam carrying intermediate lumped masses and/or rotary inertias for the different values of axial force are given in tables. The first five mode shapes are presented in graphs. The effects of axial force, intermediate lumped masses and rotary inertias on the free vibration analysis of Timoshenko multiple-step beam are investigated.
In order to get a better understanding of seismic performance of exterior beam-column joint, reciprocating loading tests with variable loading speeds or axial forces were carried out. The main findings indicate that only few cracks exist on the surface of the joint core area, while the plastic hinge region at the beam end is seriously damaged. The damage of the specimen is more serious with the increase of the upper limit of variable axial force. The deflection ductility coefficient of specimen decreases to various degrees after the upper limit of variable axial force increases. In addition, the higher the loading speed is, the lower the deflection ductility coefficient of the specimen is. The stiffness of the specimen decreases as the upper limit of variable axial force or the loading speed increase. Compared to the influence of variable axial force, the influence of the loading speed on the stiffness degradation of the specimen is more obvious. The cumulative energy dissipation and the equivalent viscous damping coefficient of specimen decrease with the increase of loading speed. The influence of variable axial force on the energy dissipation of specimen varies under different loading speeds. Based on the truss model, the biaxial stress criterion, the Rankine criterion, the Kent-Scott-Park model, the equivalent theorem of shearing stress, the softened strut-and-tie model, the controlled slip theory and the proposed equations, a calculation method for the shear capacity is proposed with satisfactory prediction results.
Numerical simulations are made to predict the axial force coefficients of a two-stage launch vehicle, and the results are compared with those by wind tunnel tests. It is found that the forebody axial force is not affected by whether the base of the body is modeled or not. Modeling the sting support used in wind tunnel tests reduced the base axial force compared to the results without it. The present calculation shows that the forebody axial forces are underestimated while the base axial forces are overestimated. The total axial force, therefore, compares with the experimental data with better accuracy by cancelling out the errors of opposite signs. Modeling of the sting support in numerical simulations is found to be necessary to get a better agreement with the experiments for both base and overall axial force coefficients.
An improved method is presented to estimate the axial force of a bar member with vibrational measurements based on modified Timoshenko beam theory. Bending stiffness effects, rotational inertia, shear deformation, rotational inertia caused by shear deformation are all taken into account. Axial forces are estimated with certain natural frequency and corresponding mode shape, which are acquired from dynamic tests with five accelerometers. In the paper, modified Timoshenko beam theory is first presented with the inclusion of axial force and rotational inertia effects. Consistent mass and stiffness matrices for the modified Timoshenko beam theory are derived and then used in finite element simulations to investigate force identification accuracy under different boundary conditions and the influence of critical axial force ratio. The deformation coefficient which accounts for rotational inertia effects of the shearing deformation is discussed, and the relationship between the changing wave speed and the frequency is comprehensively examined to improve accuracy of the deformation coefficient. Finally, dynamic tests are conducted in our laboratory to identify progressive axial forces of a steel plate and a truss structure respectively. And the axial forces identified by the proposed method are in good agreement with the forces measured by FBG sensors and strain gauges. A significant advantage of this axial force identification method is that no assumption on boundary conditions is needed and excellent force identification accuracy can be achieved.

This paper presents analytic solutions of defection and their resonance diagrams for a uniform beam of infinite length subjected to an constant axial force and moving transverse load simultaneously. Steady solutions are obtained by a time-independent coordinate moving with the load. The supporting foundation includes damping effects. The influences of the axial force, the damping coefficient and the load velocity on the beam response are studied. The limiting cases of no damping and critical damping are also investigate. The profiles of the deflection of the beam are shown graphically for several values of the load speed, the axial force and damping parameters. Form the results, following conclusions have been reached. 1. The critical velocity .THETA.cr decreases as the axial compressive force increases, but increases as the axial tensile force increase. 2. At the critical velocity .THETA.cr the deflection have a tendency to decrease as the axial tensile force increases and to increase gradually as the axial compressive force increases. 3. In case if relatively small dampings, the deflection increases suddenly as the velocity of the moving load approaches the critical velocity, and it reachs its maximum at the critical velocity, and it decreases and become greatly affected by the axial force as the velocity increases further. 4. in case of relatively large dampings, as the velocity increases the deflection decreases gradually and it is affected little by the axial load.

It is important to control the axial forces of high tension bolts such as the automobile, construction machine, aircraft, marine engine bolts. However, the direct method to measure the axial forces of bolts practically have not been found out. The ultrasonic techniques is based on the principles that the bolt tensile elongation and ultrasonic velocity changes are proportional to the axial force below the yield point of the materials. From the result of the experiment, the coefficient of acoustoelasticity k could be measured as - 11.18*10$_{-5}$m $m^{2}$k $g_{f}$./.
Flow structures in an axial compressor with a non-uniform tip clearance were predicted by solving a simple prediction method. For more reliable prediction at the off-design condition, off-design flow characteristics such as loss and flow blockage were incorporated in the model. The predicted results showed that flow field near the design condition is largely dependent on the local tip clearance effect. However overall flow field characteristics are totally reversed at off-design condition, especially at the high flow coefficient. The tip clearance effect decreases, while the local loss and flow blockage make a complicated effect on the compressor flow field. The resultant fluid induced Alford's force has a negative value near the design condition and it reverses its sign as the flow coefficient increases and shows a very steep increase as the flow coefficient increases.
Piston friction is one of the important but complicated sources of energy loss of a hydraulic axial piston machine. In this paper, two formulas are derived for estimating instantaneous piston friction force and average piston friction moment loss. The derived formula can be applicable for piston guides with or without bushing as well as for axial piston machines of motoring and pumping operations. Through the formula derivation, a typical curve shape of friction force found from several experimental measurements during one revolution of a machine is clearly explained in this paper that it is mainly due to the equivalent friction coefficient dependent on its angular position. Stribeck curve effect can easily be incorporated into the formula by replacing outer and inner friction coefficients at both edges of a piston with the coefficient given by Manring (1999) considering mixed/boundary lubrication effects. Novel feature of the derived formula is that it is represented only by physical dimensions of a machine, hence it allows to estimate the piston friction force and loss moment of a machine without hardworking experimental test.

In this paper, the oblique water-entry impact of a vehicle with a disk cavitator is studied experimentally and numerically. The effectiveness and accuracy of the numerical simulation are verified quantitatively by the experiments in this paper and the data available in the literature. Then, the numerical model is used to simulate the hydrodynamic characteristics and flow patterns of the vehicle under different entry conditions, and the axial force is found to be an important parameter. The influences of entry angle, entry speed and cavitator area on the axial force are studied. The variation law of the force coefficient and the dimensionless penetration distance at the peak of the axial force are revealed. The research conclusions are beneficial to engineering calculations on the impact force of a vehicle with a disk cavitator over a wide range of water-entry parameters.
