  • In this paper, the effect of matrix cracks on the buckling of a hybrid laminated plate is investigated. The plate is composed of carbon nanotube reinforced functionally graded (CNTR-FG) layers and conventional fiber reinforced composite (FRC) layers. Different distributions of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) through the thickness of layers are considered. The cracks are modeled as aligned slit cracks across the ply thickness and transverse to the laminate plane, and the distribution of cracks is assumed statistically homogeneous corresponding to an average crack density. The first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is employed to incorporate the effects of rotary inertia and transverse shear deformation, and the meshless kp-Ritz method is used to obtain the buckling solutions. Detailed parametric studies are conducted to investigate the effects of matrix crack density, CNTs distributions, CNT volume fraction, plate aspect ratio and plate length-to-thickness ratio, boundary conditions and number of layers on buckling behaviors of hybrid laminated plates containing CNTR-FG layers.

  • External bonding of steel plates has been used to strengthen deficient reinforced-concrete structures since the 1960s. In recent years, fiber-reinforcde polymer(FRP) plates have been increasingly used to replace steel plates due to their superior properties. This paper is concerned with anchorage failure due to crack propagation parallel to the boned plated near or along the adhesive/concrete interface, staring from the critically stressed position toward the anchored end of the plates. Factor of bond-slip interface model is average bond stress, effective length, slip volume and fracture energy. The aim of the present paper is to provide a comprehensive assessment of bond-slip interface model with concrete and CFRP plates.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate flexural performance and bond characteristics of RC beams strengthened using ductile polyethylene terephthalate(PET) with low elastic modulus. Bond tests were planned and completed following CSA S806. Test variables were fiber type and fiber amount. Also, total of 8 RC beams was tested. Major test variables of the beam tests included section ductility(${\mu}=3.4$, 7.0), fiber type(CF, GF, PET) and amount of fiber strengthening. Moment-curvature analyses of the beam sections were also performed. In bond tests, the bond stress distribution as well as the maximum bond stress increased with increasing amount of PET. In case of 10 layers of PET, the effective bond length was 60 mm with the maximum and the average bond stress of 2.33 and 2.10 MPa, respectively. RC beam test results revealed that the moment capacity of the RC beams strengthened using PET 10 and 20 layers increased over the control beam with little reduction in ductility by fiber strengthening. All beams strengthened using PET resulted in ductile flexural failure without any sign of fiber debonding or fiber rupture. It was important to include the mechanical properties of adhesive in the moment-curvature analysis of PET-strengthened beam sections.

  • Ordered single-walled hollow aluminogermanate (ALGE) nano-balls(NBs) and nano-tubes(NTs) have been self-assembled from the ALGE precursors having an Al/Ge ratio of 1.33 using simple pH-control. The hollow ALGE NBs with average monodisperse diameters of 5 nm and chemistry of Al/Ge=1.5~1.6 were formed through structural assembly in the ALGE solution (Al/Ge=1.33) highly basified to pH=13(Na/Al=28~30) and followed by immediate acidification to pH=9. When the basified solution(pH=13) were acidified to pH=4, ALGE S-NTs (Short-fiber nano-tubes) with diameters of 3.3 nm, 15~20 nm in length, and chemistry of Al/Ge=2.6~2.8 were successfully synthesized. Whereas the solution was basified to pH=9, and subsequently acidified to pH=4, L-NTs(Long-fiber nano-tubes) with >100 nm in length were synthesized for the first time. The self-assembly of the hollow NBs, S-NTs, and L-NTs form the ALGE precursors can be explained by the degree of $H^+$-dissociation of the -Ge-OH inner surfaces, which was controlled by amount of $Na^+$ and pH conditions of ALGE precursor solutions. This results indicate that target forms of ALGE nanomaterials can be synthesized by simple pH controls.

  • In order to investigate the effect of physical forms of starter diets on performance, weaning age, nutrient digestibility and rumen biochemical factors, 24 female of neonatal Brown Swiss calves (average body weight of $39.5{\pm}1.2kg$) were randomly assigned to three treatments. Dietary treatments were mashed (MS), pelleted (PS), and texturized (TS) starter using 8 calves from birth till 90 days of age in each treatment. Diets were formulated to be iso-nitrogenous with 21% crude protein. Based on the experimental results, calves that received PS and TS diets, had significant higher average daily gain (ADG) than those receiving MS (p<0.01). Dry matter intake in calves fed PS and TS was greater than calves fed MS (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference in feed efficiency. Treatments had no effect on initiation of rumination. Weaning age of calves in MS was longer than the other two treatments (p<0.05). Crude protein and organic matter digestibility in MS treated calves were lower than other treatments (p<0.05). No differences were observed in neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and ash digestibility among treatments (p>0.05). Ruminal pH was higher (p<0.01) in MS than the other groups, but ruminal ammonia (g/dl) concentration was not different among the treatments. Body measurements such as body length, pin width, hip width, pin to hip length, size of metacarpus and metatarsus bones, hip height, wither height, stomach size and heart girth were not significantly different among the treatments. Overall, it is concluded that starter diets in the form of pellet and texture can improve performance in neonatal Brown Swiss calves compared to the mashed form.

  • Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars are sometimes used when corrosion of conventional reinforcing steel bar is of concern. In this study, a total of 36 beams and one-way slabs reinforced using GFRP bars were tested in flexure. Four different GFRP bars of 13 mm diameter were used in the test program. In most test specimens, the GFRP bars were lap spliced at center. All beams and slabs were tested under 4-point loads so that the spliced region be subject to constant moment. Test variables were splice lengths, cover thicknesses, and bar spacings. No stirrups were used in the spliced region so that the tests result in conservative bond strengths. Average bond stresses that develop between GFRP bars and concrete were determined through nonlinear analysis of the cross-sections. An average bond stress prediction equation was derived utilizing two-variable linear regression. A splice length equation based on 5% fractile concept was then developed. As a result of this study, a rational equation with which design splice lengths of the GFRP bars can be determined, was proposed.

  • The daily food intake for dairy cows has to be effectively controlled to breed a sound group of cows as well as to enhance the productivity of the cows. But, feed stuffs are fed in the common bulk for a group of cows in most cases despite that the individual food intake has to be varied. To obtain the feed for each cow, both the nutrient requirements and the nutrient composition of fred have to be provided in advance, which are based on the status of cows such as weigh marginal weight amount of milk, fat concentration in milk, growth and milking stages, and rough feed ratio, etc. Then, the mixed ration fur diet would be computed by the nutrient requirements constraints. However, when TMR (Total Mixed Ration) is conventionally supplied for a group of cows, it is almost impossible to get an optimal feed mixed ration meeting the nutrient requirements of each individual cow since the constraints are usually conflicting and over-constrained although they are linear. Hence, addressed in this paper is a simulated annealing (SA) technique to find the food intake for dairy cows, considering the characteristics of individual or grouped cows. Appropriate parameters fur the successful working of SA are determined through preliminary experiments. The parameters include initial temperature, epoch length. cooling scheduling, and stopping criteria. In addition, a neighborhood solution generation method for the effective improvement of solutions is presented. Experimental results show that the final solution for the mixture of feed fits the rough feed ratio and some other nutrient requirements such as rough fiber, acid detergent fiber, and neutral detergent fiber, with 100 percent, while fulfilling net energy for lactating, metabolic energy, total digestible nutrients, crude protein, and undegraded intake protein within average five percent.

  • In coupon test of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) as brittle materials, the converted strain derived from total deformation and effective length was introduced and its advantages were described. In general, measured value from strain gauge is used for determining the tensile properties of material, but it is not quite effective in CFRP because brittle material can not redistribute its stress and it only represents local behavior. For this reason, the converted strain response can be utilized effectively as a supplementary indicator, which evaluated the average value of tensile properties in brittle material and confirmed the strain measured by strain gauge. In addition, the converted strain clearly visualized 1) the effect of initial internal strain caused by fabrication errors and setup misalignment when applying gripping force and 2) post-response of partial rupture of CFRP caused by non-uniform strain distribution. non-uniform strain distribution.

  • To investigate the relationship between strain distribution and tensile properties of brittle material, five types of tensile coupon of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) modified the tab portion in order to have a strain distribution including S0, SD1, SD2, SV1, SV2 were tested. The ultimate stress and strain of SD2 and SV2 which was intended to have larger strain distribution were smaller than those of SD1 and SV1, that was more clearly shown in the test results of the symmetric coupons (SV series) than the asymmetric coupons (SD series). In addition, the ultimate stress and strain of most coupons with strain distribution in this study were decreased when compared to the control group with uniform strain. These results were analyzed in various ways through 1) the average of the strain values directly measured by the strain gages, 2) the converted strain calculated by dividing the total deformation by the effective length, and 3) the ultimate effective strain derived from both the elastic modulus and the ultimate load. The values measured by strain gage indicates response of the local region precisely, but it does not represent the response from whole section. However, the converted strain and effective strain can supplement disadvantage of gage because they represent the average response of whole section. In particular, the effective strain can provide rupture strain conservatively, which can be utilized in practice, when the value obtained by strain gage was not effective due to gage damage or abnormal gage readings near ultimate load. This value provides a value that can be used even when partial rupture has occurred and is reasonably useful for specimens with strain distribution.

  • Several agronomic characters, feed value, and mineral uptake of two corn hybrids infected by different degrees of rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV) were studied at the south-eastern part of RBSDV prevalent areas in Korea. Although both hybrids were infected with RBSDV by 100%. culm length of Suweon 19 was more severely reduced than that of Jinjuok and there were positive correlations between culm length and top dry weight of individual plants. The reduced culm length was largely due to the shortened length of upper five internodes in both hybrids and also due to the reduced number of internodes in Jinjuok. As culm length reduced, percent ear-bearing plants, average ear weight, and number of kernels per ear reduced significantly in both hybrids. The kernel weight of Suweon 19 decreased with reduced culm length, but that of Jinjuok was similar among the different culm lengths. However, as culm length decreased, crude protein and fiber in whole plants and N, P, K, Mg in culm + leaf sheath increased, but nitrogen free extract in whole plant decreased. And crude fat in whole plant and N, P, K, Mg concentrations in leaf blades and ear were similar among the culm lengths.
