In this study, domestic wheat flour was used to develop a native sourdough suitable for the Korean environment, in an attempt to replace the sourdough starter that are currently available in local markets and used to prepare sourdough breads. Nine kinds of domestic wheat flour (available at local market) were examined and to characterized according to their general ingredients, gluten contents, colorimetry data and mixograph measurement. In addition, the flour were used to make sourdough starters that were assessed for pH, TTA, and fermentation rate from which an optimal sourdough starter could be chosen. This study also compared the product characteristics breads prepared from the with one another by adding extracted sourdough starters. In order to analyze the quality characteristics of the breads, a comparative analysis was conducted through on data for dough fermentation rate, specific volume, texture analyses, colorimetry, water activity and sensory tests. According to the results, the sourdough starters KWF 3, KWF 4 and KWF 5 scored well in evaluations for gluten content, wheat flour characteristics and pH, and were deemed the most optimal starters. To characterize the sourdough breads prepared from KWF 3, KWF 4, and KWF 5, their quality characteristics were analyzed and then compared to those sourdough bread (control group) prepared using a sourdough starter made from imported wheat flour. According to the comparative analysis of the quality characteristics, KWF 4 had the largest volume and specific volume, but had the lowest textural hardness, indicating the softest texture of overall. According to sensory tests, the bread prepared from KWF 4 was significantly more preferred than the other specimens.
The objectives of the study were to analyze the various nutrient contents of ready-to-use-supplemental-food (RUSF) developed with Eastern African ethnic plants and compare them with commercially available supplemental food (CASF) for infants. RUSF was made with three African plants, including Ficus sur, Amaranthus caudatus, and Prosopis juliflorafa and locally available food ingredients in DR Congo and Ethiopia and was cooked at $180^{\circ}C$ for 20 min in a conventional oven. Macronutrients were analyzed by the AOAC method. Contents of 17 amino acids were analysed with amino acid analyzer, and vitamin $B_1%$ niacin, vitamin $B_6$, and vitamin C were analyzed with HPLC. Isomers of vitamin E were analyzed by GC-FID. The price of RUSF was 0.133 USD per 100g. Contents of macronutrients were not significantly different between developed RUSF and CASF. Results of amino acid analysis showed that most amino acid contents were similar or higher in RUSF compared with CASF. However, glutamic acid and lysine contents were less in RUSF than in CASF. Vitamin E and vitamin $B_1$ contents were more than five times higher in RUSF (22.40, 6.26 mg/100 g, respectively) than in CASF (4.00, 0.80 mg/100 g, respectively). Niacin was about three times higher while vitamin $B_6$ was almost 20 times higher in RUSF than in CASF. However, ascorbic acid was significantly lower in RUSF (3.43 mg/100 g) than in CASF (42.08 mg/100 g). Our study found that the developed localized RUSF showed higher nutrient contents in most micronutrients analyzed except for ascorbic acid. Out of 17 amino acids, glutamic acid and lysine contents in RUSF were less than in CASF. Therefore, further study is needed in order to improve these nutrients contents.

This study was performed to compare the physicochemical characteristics between imported dry-cured Hams from black and white pigs available in the domestic market. The black dry-cured hams contain higher moisture and ash contents than that of white hams, whereas the black dry-cured hams had lower fat contents than that of the black ones (p < 0.05). The hams from black ones had lower lightness ($L^*$) and yellowness ($b^*$) values than those from the white ones (p < 0.05). Moreover, the pH values and salt contents of the hams from the black ones were higher than those from the white ones (p < 0.05). Moreover, the black ones had a higher water holding capacity (WHC) than that of the white ones (p < 0.05). The thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) values of the black ones were lower than those of the white ham samples (p < 0.05). For texture profile analysis, hardness, gumminess, chewiness, cohesiveness and shear force values were significantly lower in the black ones than in the white samples (p < 0.05). Saturated fatty acids in the white ones were higher than in the black ones, whereas unsaturated fatty acids in the black ones were higher (p < 0.05). Free amino acids such as aspartic acid and glutamic acid in the black ones were higher than in the white ones (p < 0.05). The shrinkage of muscle fiber was stronger in the white ones. Considering the meat quality parameters of ham, the black ones showed a superior meat quality. In general, this research can be used as fundamental information for the mass production of dry-cured hams in Korea.
Background: Physical activity is a component of lifestyle activity and one that has been increasingly seen as 'the medicine' to cure chronic diseases, including certain types of cancer. Physical activity has potent impact on mortality but only if it is well incorporated as lifestyle activity may it allow a better outcome of the quality of life of cancer survivors. This paper presents a review on the evidence of physical activity being actively promoted as lifestyle activity amongst cancer survivors, for the last five years. Materials and Methods: Electronic databases were systematically searched for randomized controlled trials incorporated as lifestyle activity through MEDLINE with the associated terms "physical activity or exercise", "quality of life" and "cancer survivor or people with cancer", 'lifestyle' and 'randomised controlled trial'. The period of search was confined to publication within January 2008 till December 2012 and further limits were to full text, peer reviewed, abstract available and English language. Results: Based on inclusion criteria, 45 articles were retrieved. Of these, 41 were excluded after examining the full paper. Four final articles on randomized controlled trials were studied to determine the effectiveness of PA to improve the quality of life in post treatment cancer survivors and positive associations were found. Conclusions: Physical activity is related to better quality of life of cancer survivors. Only one paper had characteristics of lifestyle incorporation for a lifestyle redesign, but none overtly or actively promoting exercise interventions as an essential lifestyle activity. With increasing survivorship, the benefits of physical activity must be aggressively and overtly promoted to optimize its positive impact.

Petroleum based fossil fuels used to power most processes today are non-renewable fuels. This means that once used, they cannot be reproduced for a very long time. The maximum combustion of fossil fuels occurs in automobiles i.e. the vehicles we drive every day. Thus, there is a requirement to shift from these non-renenewable sources of energy to sources that are renewable and environment friendly. This is causing the need to shift towards more environmentally-sustainable transport fuels, preferably derived from biomass, such as biodiesel blends. These blends can be made from oils that are available in abundance or as waste e.g. waste cooking oil, animal fat, oil from seeds, oil from algae etc. Waste Cooking Oil(WCO) is a waste product and so, converting it into a transportation fuel is considered highly environmentally sustainable. Keeping this in mind, a life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed to evaluate the environmental implications of replacing diesel fuel with WCO biodiesel blends in a regular Diesel engine. This study uses Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to determine the environmental outcomes of biodiesel from WCO in terms of global warming potential, life cycle energy efficiency (LCEE) and fossil energy ratio (FER) using the life cycle inventory and the openLCA software, version 1.3.4: 2007 - 2013 GreenDelta. This study resulted in the conclusion that the biodiesel production process from WCO in particular is more environmentally sustainable as compared to the preparation of diesel from raw oil, also taking into account the combustion products that are released into the atmosphere as exhaust emissions.
Background: Depression is the most common psychological reactions in women with breast cancer. This study aimed at investigating the amount of depression and its role in predicting the quality of life of women suffering from breast cancer. Materials and Methods: The present descriptive study in volved a correlation method with 98 women living in Kermanshah-Iran with breast cancer. According to the access to the patients and the condition of conducting the research, they were chosen by available sampling. Life quality inventory (World Health Organization, 1989) and depression inventory (Beck et al., 2000) were used to gather the data. Moreover, to analyze the relationships among the variables correlation analysis with Pearson method, as well as multiple regression with the enter method and frequency analysis were applied. Results: The findings revealed that not only is depression high, but also there is a negative significant relationship between depression and the quality of life, with predictive potential. Conclusions: The finding of a relationship between depression and the quality of life points to the need for addressing psychological problems of the affected individuals more appropriately. It is suggested that we consider psychological and educational services for patients in treatment planning to make people aware of different psychological aspects of their disease and ways of struggling and overcoming the problems.
Rearing media were selected for the production of sterile larvae of greenbottle blowfly, Phaenicia (=Lucilia) sericata (Meigen) which is widely used in maggot therapy. Eight media available in the market were used in this study. Egg hatchability was not different among the media. Survivorship of the larvae was higher in blood agar (BA), sabouraud dextrose agar, and brucella blood agar than the others. A higher content (20${\sim}$40%) of sheep blood in BA and chocolate agar increased the survivorship of larvae. The eggs and the early 3rd larvae could be stored for 12 days at $8^{\circ}C$ and for 15 days at $6^{\circ}C$ without decrease in hatchability and larval survivorship, respectively.

Two subspecies, japonica and indica, have been reported in rice, which differ in several ecotypic traits. However, reproductive barriers in hybrid progenies between subspecies have been major obstacles in breeding programs using inter-subspecific hybridization. As the first step to elucidate the reproductive barriers, we developed subspecies-specific(SS) STS markers in this study. A total of 765 STS primers were designed through comparing DNA sequences at every $2{\sim}3$cM interval between japonica and indica rices, which are available at Web DBs such as IRGSP, NCBI, TIGR, and GRAMENE, and tested for subspecies-specificity using 15 indica and 15 japonica varieties of diverse origin. Of them, 67 STS markers were identified as SS STS markers and their subspecies-specificity scores were estimated. The SS markers were dispersed throughout the genome along chromosomes. Of them, 64 SS markers were mapped on an RIL population derived from a Dasanbyeo(indica)/TR22183(japonica) cross. Genomic inclination of RILs was evaluated based on the genotyping with different types of markers. Association test between markers and segregation distortion revealed that segregation distortion might not be the cause of generating SS markers. The SS markers will be applicable to estimate the genomic inclination of varieties or lines and to study the differentiation of indica and japonica, and ultimately to breed true hybrid rice varieties in which desirable characters from both subspecies are recombined.
PURPOSES : In this study, field performance evaluation of crack treatment of pavement and the feasibility of surface treatment of pavement are presented. The performance and cost of preventive maintenance methods have been previously verified, and the methods are being used in many developed countries and cities. However, the performance and cost of the system have not been verified in domestic, field applications. Therefore, in order to improve performance, the field performance is evaluated, and a reasonable cost is proposed. METHODS : Visual Inspection was conducted to evaluate the field application and performance of the preventive maintenance method. In addition, the PCI index was calculated from the results of visual inspection of the application area of the surface treatment method, and the performance life of each method was predicted. For the economic evaluation, life cycle cost analysis was performed using the life cycle cost analysis program. RESULTS :In order to evaluate and quantify the field performance of crack repair material, the residue condition of the pavement surface after crack treatment, rather than the performance of the material, is evaluated. In addition, the crack resistance and performance life of surface treatment methods are evaluated. The cost of currently available treatment methods are compared to the common pavement cut and overlay method, and it is determined that the preventive method is not economical based on life cycle cost analysis. CONCLUSIONS :Because of the characteristics of cracking, it is necessary to conduct the evaluation of currently applied methods and the analysis of the cause of damage, by visual inspection. Moreover, in order to evaluate the performance and economic suitability of the currently applied surface treatment methods, it is necessary to acquire information on application sections by monitoring their long-term conditions and performance.
