The managerial environment of automobile industry has been rapidly changing, mainly with the tighter standard of legal and environmental regulations, the pressure of cost reduction from the end-user, the various functional improvements of vehicles, and the globalization management. In order to survive in this complicate circumstances, the automakers have strongly pursued the mutual collaboration with the suppliers, especially tier-1, for the optimal selection of parts/materials and the assembly manufacturing processes of the new model development. They prepare the early involvement program for the suppliers during the conceptual design stage, and implement the win-win strategy of technology development activity, in order to improve the value creation. This study considers the strategic technology management of automotive steel sheets makers on the aspects of strategy, processes, human & physical resources, and organization structure. It also suggests the corporate strategies of steel mills, in order to obtain the technology competence.
Hot-dip galvannealed sheet (GA) with high strength of 590MPa grade in tensile strength, has developed for automotive applications. However, for a successful application, the microstructure and galvannealing behavior of galvannealed TRIP steel sheets must be strictly controlled. High silicon contents steel has problems with weld-ability, zinc coating and reduction of retained austenite volume fraction after galvannealing process. The main purpose of this study is to solve the problem as indicated above.
High strength steels such as transformation induced plastic steel, dual phase and solid solution Hardening have been developed and continuously improved due to the intensified needs in the automotive industry. But silicon and manganese in transformation induced plastic steels were known to exhibit harmful effects on galvannealing reaction by oxide film formed during heat treatment. Therefore, in this work, the applicability of Zn-Ni electrodeposition instead of hot dip galvannealed coating to transformation induced plastic steels was evaluated and optimum electroplating condition was investigated. Based on these investigations optimized electroplating conditions were proposed and Zn-Ni electrogalvanized steel sheet was produced by EGL (electrogalvanized line). Its perfomance properties for automotive steel was evaluated.
Due to the environmental problems of fuel consumption and vehicle emission, etc., automotive makers are trying to reduce the weight of vehicles. The most effective way to reduce a vehicle weight is to use lighter materials, such as aluminum and plastics. Aluminum Intensive Vehicle(AIV) has many advantages in the aspects of weight reduction, body stiffness and model change. So, most of automotive manufacturers are attempting to develop AIV using Aluminum Space Frame(ASF). The weight of AIV can be generally reduced to about 30% than that of conventional steel vehicle without the loss of impact energy absorbing capability. And the body stiffness of AIV is higher than that of conventional steel monocoque body. In this study, Aluminum Intensive Vehicle is developed and analyzed on the basis of steel monocoque body. The energy absorbing characteristics of aluminum extrusion components are investigated from the test and simulation results. The crush and crash characteristics of AIV based on the FMVSS 208 regulations are evaluated in comparison with steel monocoque. Using these results, the design concepts of the effective energy absorbing members and the design guide line to improve crashworthiness for AIV are suggested.
After high power lasers are avaliable in the commercial market, the number of applications of the laser welding has been increased in manufacturing industries. Although the tailored blank laser welding of butt jointed steel sheets is well known recently in the automotive industries, the lap joint laser welding is a new technology to the automotive manufacturing people as well as the design people. But the deep penetration laser welding seems to be preferred to the partial penetration welding for the lap joint welding in the automotive manufacturers because the partial penetration is a serious deflect for the butt joint. In this study, the feasibility of partial penetration welding fur the lap joint $CO_2$ laser welding was studied fur the 1mm thick 390MPa high strength steel sheets for automotive bodies. The process window of the lap joint partial penetration welding was obtained from experiments with the gap size and the welding speed as process parameters. The partial penetration welding was found excellent on the basis of the tensile shear strength and sectional geometry. The bead width, input energy Per volume, tensile-shear strength, deformation energy and the sectional geometries after tensile-shear tests of partial penetration welded specimens are compared with those of full penetration welded specimens with a series of gaps and welding speeds.
This paper analyzes the magnetic property according to the machined shape of steel material with non-oriented silicon steel (50PN470/50A470), that is most commonly used in the design of electrical equipment. Toward this end, specimens were produced and divided into Bar-Specimen (Epstein Frame Tester) and Ring-Specimen (Toroidal Ring Tester). The characteristics of the electrical Silicon steel were measured using the instruments solely dedicated to measuring each specimen. The core loss of the Bar-Specimen, which is commonly used, was found to be less than that of the Ring-Specimen. This is a very important design factor in achieving the objectives of improving the product efficiency and predicting the performance of electrical equipment. It serves as a critical point of view in order to reduce the error between design value and product value. A comparative analysis was conducted regarding various characteristics (Hysteresis, B-H characteristic, Iron loss, Minor loop, Coercive force, Residual magnetic flux density, etc.) of the electrical silicon steel considered in the design of the electrical equipment according to the specimen.
48-V ISG (Integrated Starter Generator) system has attracted attention to improve the fuel efficiency of ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicle. One of the key components that significantly affects the cost and performance of the 48-V ISG system is the motor. In an ISG motor, the core and copper loss make the motor efficiency change because the motor has a broad driving operated range and more diverse driving modes compared with other motors. When designing an ISG motor, the selection of an electrical steel sheet is important, because the electrical steel sheet directly influences the efficiency of the motor. In this paper, the efficiency of the ISG motor, considering core loss and copper loss, is analyzed by testing different types of electrical steel sheets with respect to the driving speed range and mode. Using the results of a finite element method (FEM) analysis, a method to select the electrical steel sheet is proposed. This method considers the cost of the steel sheet and the efficiency according to driving mode frequency during the design process of the motor. A wound rotor synchronous machine (WRSM) was applied to the ISG motor in this study.
Nowdays, related with vehicle weight reduction, many automotive maker are trying to develop spaceframe. If aluminum member and steel member are applied together in constructing spaceframe, there will be many advantages in aspect of inclosing strength and saving weight of automotive. In this case, joining method of aluminum and steel members has to be proposed. For this method, electomagnetic joining has many advantages compared to welding. In this paper, joining of aluminum tube and steel tube using eletomagnetic pressure was studied and strength of joint was evaluated through commission test.
In automotive industry, the studies about light weight vehicle and improving the productivity have been accomplished. For that, TRIP steel was developed and research for the laser welding process have been performed. In this study, the monitoring system using photodiode was developed for laser welding process of TRIP steel. With measuring light, neural network model for estimating bead width and tensile strength was made and weld quality classification algorithm was formulated with fuzzy inference method.
