Recent Development in Polyurethanes for Automotives

  • The history of polyurethane is relatively shorter compared to that of the other polymers, though its importance has grown rapidly. Due to its unique properties, polyurethanes are widely applied in various fields. In particular, the automotive industry is one of the important application fields. To date, polyols and isocyanates used in the polyurethane industry are generally of petrochemical origin. Recently, owing to the oil crisis, legislation, and growing awareness towards environmental preservation, the demand for more sustainable and eco-friendly raw materials has increased. In this paper, the latest research and development trends in polyurethane applications were reviewed, with a focus on the automobile industry in areas such as seat comfort, noise reduction, light weight, biomass-based polyurethane, and recycling.

에어백 단품설계를 위한 전개과정과 승객거동해석 (Analyses of Deployment Process and Sled Test for Designing Airbag Module)

  • Finite element analyses are carried out to provide results usable in the design of airbag module that consists of inflater, cushion, cover, mounting plate, etc. In the first phase, a deployment process of airbag module is analyzed to evaluate the pressure waveform of developed airbag and deployment characteristics, and is compared with the test results. Interaction between head form and inflated airbag module is investigated in the second phase. In the last stage, sled test with rigid dummy, airbag midule, driving system and car interior part are simulated to investigate the influence of airbag design factor on the behavior of dummy with seat belt. The procedures can be provided as a guideline for airbag module design and improvement of airbag module performance.

  • This paper introduces experimental results of the ride qulaity characteristics of automotive seats fixed on the vibration table that is noving simultaneously to the three-axis in a similar way to the real running condition. Vibration experiment was carried out for five different automotive seats and four Korean individuals. The assessment of the ride quality characteristics for each seat and indiviual was made not only from the analysis of vibration measurements but also from the evaluation of weighied vibration signals, which were obtained using the frequency weighting function and the multiplication factor dependent on the position and axis of vibration exposure to wehole-body. The usefulness of those assessment results in analysis of the ride quality of seats is discussed and their limitation is also pointed out in this paper.

  • Dynamic analysis of a three-axle heavy truck is carried out with rigid body model and flexible body model. To see the effects of chassis flexibility, the chassis is modeled as flexible body. The mass matrix, stiffness matrix, and vibration normal modes of the chassis are obtained by a finite element analysis program, and four vibration normal modes are used in the flexible body model. The vehicle model consisting of a frame, a cab, suspensions, an engine, a deck, a seat, and tires, has total 77 degrees of freedom. The result shows that the peaked acceleration in the flexible model is lower than that of the rigid body model.

정상류 조건에서의 디젤 연료 분사 노즐내의 유동가시화 (Visualization of the Flow in a Diesel Injection Nozzle In case of the Steady Flow Condition)

  • The effects of the internal flow in a D.I. Diesel injection nozzle on the atomization of a spray were analyzed experimentally. Flow visualization studies were made using a transparent acrylic model nozzle as a diesel nozzle . Water instead of disel fuel was used as the injection liquid. The geometry of the model nozzle was scaled up 10 times of the actual nozzle and the injection pressure for the model nozzle was adjusted so as to achieve a Reynolds number at the discharge hole that was the same as the actual nozzle. Experimental results show that when the needle lift was small, the high turbulence in the sac chamber generated by the high velocity seat flow made the spread angle of the spray plume large. Cavitation, which arose from the sac chamber, makes the spread angle of the spray plume large but the discharge coefficient small.

승객 상해치 감소를 위한 측면 에어백의 역할 (Role of Side Impact Airbag in Order to Reduce Passenger Injury Value)

  • In order to reduce passenger injuries in side collisions, car makers are developing a side impact airbag system while Volvo has already adopted. This study examines dummy injury reduction effect of a side airbag system using full car side impact simulation according to FMVSS 214 test procedure. The simulation result without side airbag shows a good correlation with test data. The folded airbag simulation is carried out to check main design factors. Through the simulation with side airbag module integrated in the seat frame, it is found that the side airbag system provides a substantially enhanced protection for car occupants in side collisions.

승차감 관련 주관평가와 객관평가의 상관성 연구 (Correlation between Subjective and Objective Assessments of Ride Comfort)

  • In order to compare subjective and objective assessments, a passenger car was driven at several speeds over several road profiles. To measure the acceleration signals experienced by the seated subject who provided an subjective assessment, four triaxial translational accelerometers and one triaxial gyro sensor were mounted on the steering wheel and on the passenger seat and floor, respectively. Correlations were determined between the measured accelerations and the subjective assessments of 3 expert subjects and 9 general subjects using psychophysical power law.

  • 승차감이나 안전에 관련된 부분 중 하나인 자동차 시트는 차량 주행시 전달되는 충격이나 진동을 적절하게 흡수하여 승객에게 안락성을 제공한다. 또한 이러한 여건을 만족시키면서 승객의 안전을 보장하는 충분한 강성과 강도를 가져야 한다. 자동차 시트는 2가지의 모델로 설계를 하고 구조 해석을 하였다. 그 결과, 시트 백프레임의 모델 (b)가 (a)보다 적은 변형량과 피로 수명을 보였고. 모델의 중앙에 해당되는 허리부분에서 가장 많은 변형량과 파손 가능성을 보였다. 고유진동수를 적용한 진동해석에서, 모델(a)의 경우는 모델의 바깥쪽에서 안쪽으로 변형이 되었고, 모델(b)의 경우는 모델의 안쪽에서 바깥쪽으로 변형이 되었다. 전반적으로 모든 면에서 모델(b)가 (a)보다 구조적으로 안전하다고 사료된다.

메카넘 바퀴를 적용한 리프팅 휠체어의 설계 및 제작에 관한 연구 (The Study on Designing and Making Power Lifting Wheelchair using Mecanum Wheels)

  • We reported the design, prototype, test drive, and mechanical & electrical engineering analyses of a power-lifting wheelchair using mecanum wheels. Mecanum wheels enable translational and rotational movement of the device in any direction on the ground. The power-lifting capability enables the seated individual to reach the standing height of a non-disabled individual. This mecanum wheelchair is fully controlled by the joystick attached to the armrest. The motion of the wheelchair and lifting action of the seat were studied using statics and dynamics. We believe this mecanum wheelchair is a prime candidate for commercial production.
