  • AFLS (Adaptive front lighting System) is being applied to improve safety in driving automotive at night. Safe embedded system for controlling head-lamp has to be tightly designed by considering safety requirement of hardware-dependent software, which is embedded in automotive ECU(Electronic Control Unit) hardware under severe environmental noise. In this paper, we propose an adaptive headlight controller with newly-designed symmetric angle sensor compensator, which is integrated with ECU-based adaptive front light system. The proposed system, on which additional backup hardware and emergency control algorithm are integrated, effectively detects abnormal situation and restore safe status of controlling the light-angle in AFLS operations by comparing result in symmetric angle sensor. The controlled angle value is traced into internal memory in runtime and will be continuously compared with the pre-defined lookup table (LUT) with symmetric angle value, which is used in normal operation. The watch-dog concept, which is based on using angle sensor and control-value tracer, enables quick response to restore safe light-controlling state by performing the backup sequence in emergency situation.

  • A majority of car crash is affected by careless driving that causes extensive economic and social costs, as well as injuries and fatalities. Thus, the research of precise crash detection systems is very significant issues in automotive safety. A lot of crash detection algorithms have been developed, but the coverage of these algorithms has been limited to few scenarios. Road scenes and situations need to be considered in order to expand the scope of a collision detection system to include a variety of collision modes. The proposed algorithm effectively handles the x, y, and z axes of the sensor, while considering time and suggests a method suitable for various real worlds. To reduce nuisance and false crash detection events, the algorithm discriminated between driving mode and parking mode. The performance of the suggested algorithm was evaluated under various scenarios, and it successfully discriminated between driving and parking modes, and it adjusted crash detection events depending on the real scenario. The proposed algorithm is expected to efficiently manage the space and lifespan of the storage device by allowing the vehicle's black box system to store only necessary crash event's videos.

  • This paper describes a robust and fast wheel slip tracking control using a moving sliding surface technique. A traction control system (TCS) is the active safety system used to prevent the wheel slipping and thus improve acceleration performance, stability and steerability on slippery roads through the engine torque and/or brake torque control. This paper presents a wheel slip control for TCS through the engine torque control. The proposed controller can track a reference input wheel slip in a predetermined time. The design strategy investigated is based on a moving sliding surface that only contains the error between the reference input wheel slip and the actual wheel slip. The used moving sliding mode was originally designed to ensure that the states remain on a sliding surface, thereby achieving robustness and eliminating chattering. The improved robustness in driving is important due to changes, such as from dry road to wet road or vice versa which always happen in working conditions. Simulations are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed moving sliding mode controller.

  • Driving safety of a vehicle is largely influenced by the damper and the tire. Developed in this research is a fault diagnosis algorithm for the two components so that the driver can be promptly informed when fault occurs in one or both of them. To this end, the damper and the tire were modeled using the neural network from their experimental data, and fault diagnosis was made using frequency responses of the damping force and the dynamic wheel force. The algorithm was tested via experiments, and it demonstrated successful diagnostic performance under various driving conditions.

  • As the number of ECUs (Electronic control units) are increasing, reliability and functional stability of a software in an ECU is getting more important. Therefore the application of functional safety standards ISO 26262 is making the software more reliable. Software fault injection test (SFIT) is required as a verification technique for the application of ISO 26262. In case of applying SFIT, an artificial error is injected to inspect the vulnerability of the system which is not easily detected during normal operation. In this paper, the basic concept of SFIT will be examined and the application of SIFT based on ISO26262 will be described.

  • Optimal engine control is needed to cope with the global environmental regulations that are globally enforced. For optimum engine control, the electronic throttle control system (ETCS) is a prerequisite. Automotive makers are having an effect on reducing emissions and improving fuel economy by applying ETCS which is designed to secure stability. The ETCS controls the output of the throttle valve by passing the output value of the accelerator position sensor (APS) to the engine control unit (ECU). In this study, the authors investigated the safety standards of domestic and overseas accelerator control system and tried to understand how the air flow control affects the engine output by replacing the throttle. The authors suggest an improvement proposal of safety standard based on the result of driving evaluation by various modes.

MILS(Model in the Loop Simulation)

  • Modern vehicle has a lot of ECU(Electronic Control Unit) products to control many parts such as engine, transmission, brake, body and so on. ECU quality is one of important factors related to vehicle quality and driver's safety. Based on Bath-tub curve which presents failure rate during product lifetime, we designed and applied Accelerated Run-in Test into manufacturing line by simulating stress amount to ECU and developing the required software and efficient test equipment for mass production. This test makes ECU products stressed through electrical and thermal stresses under excessive driving condition, which induce potential initial failure of components in the ECU during production. The outcome until these days proved that Acceleration Run-in Test have reduced initial failure rates and increased quality of ECU products in the field outstandingly.

  • With the development of autonomous driving technology, as the use of software in vehicles increases, the complexity of the system increases and the difficulty of development increases. Developments that meet ISO 26262 must be carried out to reduce the malfunctions that may occur in vehicles where the system is becoming more complex. ISO 26262 for the functional safety of the vehicle industry proposes to consider functional safety from the design stage to all stages of development. Specifically at the software level, the requirements to be complied with during development and the requirements to be complied with during verification are defined. However, it is not clearly expressed about specific design methods or development methods, and it is necessary to supplement development guidelines. The importance of analysis and verification of requirements is increasing due to the development of technology and the increase of system complexity. The vehicle industry must carry out developments that meet functional safety requirements while carrying out various development activities. We propose a process that reflects the perspective of system engineering to meet the smooth application and developmentrequirements of ISO 26262. In addition, the safety analysis/verification FMEA processforthe safety of the proposed ISO 26262 function was conducted based on the FCAS (Forward Collision Avoidance Assist System) function applied to autonomous vehicles and the results were confirmed. • This paper is concerned with the deployment of core technologies for automotive steel sheets, based on the structural change of global market. The main tasks of automotive industry are to ensure the energy consumption, environmental regulations, and driving safety. With social and legal requirements, this study analyzes the market creation processes with technological innovations for hot rolled, cold rolled and galvanized steel sheets during the 20th century. It has been proven that the leading country in the steel industry was also that in the automotive. The purchaser-supplier relations of sheet materials are then patternized in the regional markets of the United States and Japan, who share nearly 50% of market in the world. According to the paradigm shift of globalization, the balance of power in Porter's 5 forces has been moved to the buyers', and both industries pursue Win-Win strategies such as the PNGV(Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles ) and design-in system with the competition.
