  • The state-of-charge (SOC) and state-of-health (SOH) estimation of batteries play important roles in managing batteries for automotive applications. However, an accurate state estimation of a battery is difficult to achieve because of certain factors, such as measurement noise, highly nonlinear characteristics, strong hysteresis phenomenon, and diffusion effect of batteries. In certain vehicular applications, such as idle stop-start systems (ISSs), significant errors in SOC/SOH estimation may lead to a failure in restarting a combustion engine after the shut-off period of the engine when the vehicle is at rest, such as at a traffic light. In this paper, a dual extended Kalman filter algorithm with a dynamic equivalent circuit model of a lead-acid battery is proposed to deal with this problem. The proposed algorithm adopts a battery model by taking into account the hysteresis phenomenon, diffusion effect, and parameter variations for accurate state estimations of the battery. The validity of the proposed algorithm is verified through experiments by using an absorbed glass mat valve-regulated lead-acid battery and a battery sensor cable for commercial ISS vehicles.

  • For an optimal design of automotive electric system, it is important to have a reliable modeling tool to predict the charge-discharge behaviors of the automotive battery. In this work, a two-dimensional modeling was carried out to predict the charge-discharge behaviors of a 12-V automotive lead-acid battery. The model accounted for electrochemical kinetics and ionic mass transfer in a battery cell. In order to validate the modeling, modeling results were compared with the experimental data of the charge-discharge behaviors of a lead-acid battery. The discharge behaviors were measured with three different discharge rates of C/5, C/10, and C/20 at operating temperature of $25^{\circ}C$. The batteries were charged with constant current of 30A until the charging voltage reached to a predetermined value of 14.24 V and then the charging voltage was kept constant. The discharge and charge curves from the measurements and modeling were in good agreement. Based on the modeling, the distributions of the electrical potentials of the solid and solution phases, the porosity of the electrodes, and the current density within the electrodes as well as the acid concentration can be predicted as a function of charge and discharge time.

  • We found that we could manage the crystal size of active material by controlling the temperature on curing procedure which is one of the process to produce lead acid battery. The active material causes to improve initial efficiency and durability for the batteries. 3BS from the active materials after curing process is better for initial efficiency. 4BS is not good for the initial efficiency but is better than 3BS in durability by 48%. Accroding to our test results of DOD17.5% life test which is for evaluating of automobile applied ISG system, it is not suitable for flooded lead acid battery which is used for the normal automobil but it is proper to AGM lead acid battery.

  • In this study, we examined corrosion behaviors of two types of Pb alloys for a lead acid battery comparatively. One containing 6.6 wt% Sn, 36 mg/kg Bi, and 612.4 mg/kg Ca was prepared by twin-roll continuous casting. The other containing 5.2 wt% Sn, 30.5 mg/kg Ag, and 557 mg/kg Ca was made by twin-belt continuous casting. Potentiodynamic polarization tests were performed to evaluate corrosion resistance. Cyclic voltammetry was done to examine oxidation and reduction reactions occurring on the surface of each alloy in 4.8 M H2SO4 solution. Electrochemical test results implied that the Pb alloy prepared with the twin-belt casting method was less stable than that cast with the twin-roll method. Such results might be due to precipitations formed during the casting process. Rolling did not appear to affect the corrosion behavior of the twin-roll samples with Ag < 10 mg/kg, while it reduced the anodic reaction of Ag on the surface of the twin-belt sample with 30.5 mg/kg Ag.

  • To cope with automobile exhaust gas regulations, ISG (Idling Stop & Go) and charging control systems are applied to HEVs (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) for the purpose of improving fuel economy. These systems require quick charge/discharge performance at high current. To satisfy this characteristic, improvement of the positive electrode plate is studied to improve the charge/discharge process and performance of AGM(Absorbent Glass Mat) lead-acid batteries applied to ISG automotive systems. The bonding between grid and A.M (Active Material) can be improved by applying the Sand-Blasting method to provide roughness to the surface of the positive grid. When the Sand-Blasting method is applied with conditions of ball speed 1,000 rpm and conveyor speed 5 M/min, ideal bonding is achieved between grid and A.M. The positive plate of each condition is applied to the AGM LAB (Absorbent Glass Mat Lead Acid Battery); then, the performance and ISG life characteristics are tested by the vehicle battery test method. In CCA, which evaluates the starting performance at -18 ℃ and 30 ℃ with high current, the advanced AGM LAB improves about 25 %. At 0 ℃ CA (Charge Acceptance), the initial charging current of the advanced AGM LAB increases about 25 %. Improving the bonding between the grid and A.M. by roughening the grid surface improves the flow of current and lowers the resistance, which is considered to have a significant effect on the high current charging/discharging area. In a Standard of Battery Association of Japan (SBA) S0101 test, after 300 A discharge, the voltage of the advanced AGM LAB with the Sand-Blasting method grid was 0.059 V higher than that of untreated grid. As the cycle progresses, the gap widens to 0.13 V at the point of 10,800 cycles. As the bonding between grid and A.M. increases through the Sand Blasting method, the slope of the discharge voltage declines gradually as the cycle progresses, showing excellent battery life characteristics. It is believed that system will exhibit excellent characteristics in the vehicle environment of the ISG system, in which charge/discharge occurs over a short time.

  • We studied the effect of battery deep cycle according to the way of active materials formation and the creation condition of electrode material, 3BS ($3PbO{\cdot}PbSO_4{\cdot}H_2O$) and 4BS ($4PbO{\cdot}PbSO_4$), in order to develop the batteries for Idle Stop & Go system. During the curing with active materials of anode and cathode, we found that the final creased active material was deformed by temperature control and it effects the durability of batteries. AGM battery and Flooded battery with 3BS active materials have excellent initial performance. And AGM battery with 4BS active materials shows the lower performance relatively. To compare and analyze of the formation efficiency of active materials, we tested the formation chagging steps with 3 steps and 9 steps differently. The results are that AGM battery with 4BS active materials is better on initial performance than AGM battery with 3BS. After the comparison of durability by DOD 17.5% life test, AGM battery is more suitable than flooded battery for the ISG system which needs the frequent deep cycle. In conclusion, AGM battery is the most suitable for ISG system and the life performance shows 80% difference according to the way of formation and curing of AGM batteries.

  • Batteries are used for main power engine in the fields such as mobiles, electric vehicles and unmanned submarines, for starter and lamp driver in general automotive, for emergency electric source in ship. These days, lead-acid and the lithium ion batteries are increasingly used in the fields of the secondary battery, and the lead-acid battery has a low price and safety comparatively, The lithium ion battery has a high energy density, excellent output characteristics and long life, whereas it has the risk of explosion by reacting with moisture in the air. But Recently, due to the development of waterproof, fireproof, dustproof technology, lithium batteries are widely used, particularly, because their usages are getting wider enough to be used as a power source for hybrid ship and electric propulsion ship, it is necessary to manage more strictly. Hybrid ship has power supply units connected to the packets to produce more than 500kWh large power source, and therefore, A number of the communication modules and wires need to implement the wire inspection and monitor system(WIIMS) that allows monitoring server to transmit detecting voltage, current and temperature data, which is required for the management of the batteries. This paper implements a low price type wireless inspection and monitoring system(WILIMS) of the lithium ion battery for hybrid vessels using BLE wireless communication modules and power line modem( PLM), which have the advantages of low price, no electric lines compared to serial communication inspection systems(SCIS). There are state of charge(SOC), state of health(SOH) in inspection parts of batteries, and proposed system will be able to prevent safety accidents because it allows us to predict life time and make a preventive maintenance by checking them at regular intervals.
