Anti-Corrosion Performance and Applications of PosMAC® Steel

  • PosMAC® is a brand of Zn-Mg-Al hot-dip coated steel sheet developed by POSCO. PosMAC® can form dense surface oxides in corrosive environments, providing advanced corrosion resistance compared to traditional Zn coatings such as GI and GA. PosMAC® 3.0 is available for construction and solar energy systems in severe outdoor environments. PosMAC®1.5 has better surface quality. It is suitable for automotive and home appliances. Compared to GI and GA, PosMAC® shows significantly less weight reduction due to corrosion, even with a lower coating thickness. Thin coating of PosMAC® provides advanced quality and productivity in arc welding applications due to its less generation of Zn fume and spatters. In repeated friction tests, PosMAC® showed lower surface friction coefficient than conventional coatings such as GA, GI, and lubricant film coated GA. Industrial demand for PosMAC® steel is expected to increase in the near future due to benefits of anti-corrosion and robust application performance of PosMAC® steel.

  • The aim of this study to investigate polarization characteristics of WC-based alloy coatings fabricated by high velocity oxygen fuel(HVOF) process. The coatings were fabricated by HVOF process with WC-CrC-Ni, WC-Co-Cr, WC-Co composite powders. Corrosion tests were carried out using potentiostat/galvanostat at solution with pH 2 and pH 6. Corrosion potential(Ecorr) and corrosion current density(Icorr) could be analyzed from polarization curve. WC-Co-Cr coating showed more incorrodible characteristics than other coatings at solution pH 2. WC-CrC-Ni coating was more favorable anti-corrosion characteristics than other coatings at solution with pH 6.

  • 최근 자동차용 도료의 가장 큰 관심 중에 한 가지는 도장공정을 줄여 생산성 및 환경친화성을 높이는 "compact coating process"이다. 그 중에서 pre-primed 도료는 기존의 전착도료와 primer 도료를 대체하는 도료로서 각광받고 있는 기술이다. 용접이 가능한 weldable pre-primed 도료에서 가장 중요한 물성은 유연성, 내식성, 용접성 등이다. 본 연구에서는 부착성과 유연성이 우수한 polyester resin, 이를 개량하여 유연성을 극대화한 elastomeric polyester resin을 합성하였고, 내구성과 물리적 성질이 우수한 polyvinyliedene fluoride resin을 합성한 후 경화거동 및 인장물성 등을 평가하였다. elastomeric polyester resin을 사용한 도료시스템이 유연성 및 부착성 측면을 고려했을 때, pre-primed 도료시스템에 적용하기에 가장 적합하였다.

  • 폴리에스터/멜라민 경화형 도료는 기계적 물성, 내화학성 및 내마모성 등이 우수하여 pre-primed 도료 및 pre-coated metal에 널리 사용되고 있다. 그러나, 폴리에스터 수지 도료의 경화 도막은 강인하지만 유연성과 성형성이 낮은 문제점을 갖고 있다. 본 연구에서는 polycarbonate diol의 long alkyl chain을 폴리에스터 분자 구조 내에 연결시켜 경화 도막의 성형성을 개선하고자 하였으며, 성형성이 개선된 폴리에스터 도료의 선도장 강판용 도료의 적용 가능성을 확인하였다. 또한, 폴리카보네이트디올 분자량이 경화 도막 물성에 미치는 영향을 평가하고자 인장강도와 점탄성을 측정하였으며, 성형성을 확인하고자 drawing test를 실시하였다.

  • While RSW(Resistance Spot Welding) have been the most successful sheet metal joining process in automotive industry, there are certain qualify issues due to the control system and its application process. Recent materials and coatings make the process more complicated resulting in new challenges for quality welds. In this research, an intelligent RSW system with adaptive control algorithm is introduced to overcome typical RSW issues and its applications to automotive body assembly are presented.

Corrosion potential(Ecorr) and corrosion current density(Icorr) could be studied from polarization curve, and corrosion behavior was analyzed by SEM and EDS. WC-Co-Cr coating and WC-CrC-Ni coating showed more favorable anti-corrosion characteristics than WC-Co coating and substrate at solution with pH 8 and pH 13.

  • Aluminum alloys are being employed in automobile parts as strive to reduce overall vehicle weight to meet demands for improved fuel economy and reduction in vehicle emissions. Al-based composites reinforced with ceramic ($Al_2O_3,\;SiC,\;TiC\;and\;B_4C$) applications in a variety of components in automotive engines, such as liners, where the tribological properties of the material are important. In this study, Al-base composites reinforced with TiC particle powders has been developed for producing plasma spray coatings. The composite plasma spray powders were prepared Al-13Si-3Mg(wt%) alloy with TiC(40, 60 and 80wt%) particles ($0.2~5{\mu}textrm{m}$) by drum type ball milling. The composite powders ($36~76{\mu}textrm{m}$) were sprayed with plasma torch. Plasma sprayed coatings were heat-treated at $500^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. The wear resistances of the plasma sprayed coatings were found to decrease with increasing TiC content and improved with heat treatment. AlSiMg-40% TiC heat-treated coatings were showed the best wear resistance in this study.

  • The ceramic coatings are excellent materials of cutting tools and sliding parts. To evaluate the wear characteristics of very thin ceramic coated layer, it is very important to investigate its wear process microscopically. An effective method for investigating the wear of a thin layer is the observation of wear process in microscopic detail using in-situ system. In this study, using the SEM Tribosystem as in-situ system, the microscopic wear mode of TiN coatings was investigated in repeated sliding. As results, four modes were observed for TiN coatings: Ploughing, powder formation, flake formation and coating delimitation. The observation of the microscopic wear by in-situ system can clarify the allowable stress of TiN coating.

  • 본 연구는 고형분 70%인 하이솔리드 아크릴 수지 (BMHA)를 합성하여, 환경친화성 도료인 하이솔리드 아크릴/폴리이소시아네이트 도료(BNHS)에 적용하고 그의 도막특성을 살펴본 것에 그 의의가 있다. BMHA는 새로운 형의 단량체로서 acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM)을 도입하고 여기에 n-butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate 및 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate를 4원공중합시켜 얻었다. BMHA 합성에 있어서 T$_{g}$ 값이 낮을수록, AAEM의 양이 많을수록 각각 높은 전환율을 나타내었고, T$_{g}$값 고정하의 OH 값 변화에 따른 전환율은 큰 차이가 없었다. BMHA와 폴리이소시아네이트를 상온경화시켜 하이솔리드 BNHS 도료를 제조하고서 자동차 상도용 도료로서의 적합성 여부를 알아보기 위하여 도막물성 시험을 한 결과, BNHS내에 AAEM 도입 전후의 도막물성 비교시험에서 AAEM 도입후에 내마모성과 내용제성이 향상됨으로써 자동차 상도용 도료로서의 응용가능성을 보여주었다.다.

대기 플라즈마 용사 공정에 의해 제조된 철계합금-몰리브덴 혼합 코팅층의 미세조직 및 내마모성 (Correlation of Microstructure and Tribological Properties of Mo Blended Fe-Base Coatings Fabricated by Atmospheric Plasma Spraying)

  • Atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) is world-widely used process in the automotive industry as a method to provide wear resistance coatings for engine cylinder bore, using various materials. The weight of engine blocks can be considerably decreased by removing cast iron liners, which can finally result in the improvement of fuel efficiency. In this study, five kinds of powder materials, 1.2C steel powder and 1.2C steel powder mixed with 5, 10, 15, 20 wt.%. molybdenum powder, were deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying in order to investigate the effect of molybdenum on the wear resistance of coatings. Microstructural analysis showed that molybdenum splats were well distributed in 1.2C steel matrix with intimate bonding. The molybdenum added coatings showed better tribological properties than 1.2C steel coating. However, above the 15 wt.%. blending fraction, wear resistance was somewhat degraded with poor roughness of worn surface due to the brittle fracture occurred in molybdenum splats. Consequently, compared to conventional liner material, gray cast iron, 10 wt. pct. molybdenum blended 1.2C steel coating showed much better tribological properties and therefore it looks very feasible to replace gray cast iron liner.
