  • Described in this paper is a modelling methodology for mass production system simulation. The mass production system under consideration consists of various types of flow lines, special purpose production facilities, conveyor lines, palletized carts, and storage facilities. This type of production system is typical in home appliance industry, automobile industry, footwear industry, etc. where a variety of product mix are mass-produced. The modelling methodology is based on the "discrete-event formalism", and an "activity-oriented world view" is adopted to formalize the system description. A distinctive feature of the modelling methodology is that only the static structure (ie, system components) is included in the fixed model. The dynamic structure of the system is specified through a "data-driven" mechanism, which is an extension of the "experimental frame" concept. Each type of system components (ie, flow line, conveyors, carts, etc.) is formally modeled by using Activity Cycle Diagrams. The issue of "model structuring" is also addressed. The modeling methodology has been successfully applied in a real simulation study of a mass production system.

  • Industrial Complex in Ulsan is one of the most important areas in the nation. It includes ship building, automobile production, petroleum industry, non-metalic industry, and related industries. However, water for drinking and industry use has been and will be short seriously. Thus available drinking water sources were searched. By rebuilding the two existing dams 20m higher than the present levels, $500,000m^3/day$(for 200days) of water sources may be produced. Additional volume of $13,000m^3/day$(for 200days) can be obtained by a number of small dam construction in the vincity area. Underground water of about $50,000m^3/day$ may also be available. The total of $680,000m^3/day$ could be produced in Ulsan area, which is enough for the population of 1,200,000 in Ulsan area even after year 2011. This newly searched volume of water may be free from pollution. Raising the dam levels may also prevent Ulsan city from chronic flooding problems. Additional advantage is that as much as the newly developed water resources can be supplied to the industrial complexes.

  • Integrating computer-aided design with computer-aided fabrication and construction will fundamentally redefine the relationship between design and construction. Rapid prototyping(RP) is evaluated as one of the integration method available but it has been regarded as very expensive and complex design evaluation tool and is only suitable for large mechanical design shops in automobile and aerospace industry. However current status of rapid prototyping is changing since the new generation of RP equipment, less expensive and more user-friendlier, now can be installed and use in design firms. Simultaneously increasing use of 3D CAAD software is also helping to use rapid prototyping widely. It is crucial to acknowledge rapid prototyping technologies are not only for avant-garde architect such as Frank O. Gehry but ordinary 90% architects, who can have benefit from fast and cost-effective technology. With its fast development and adaptation in architectural industry, it is quite necessary to include rapid prototyping education in regular CAAD courses either undergraduate or graduate level.

  • According to the analysis of special medical examination and work environment monitoring data, the rate of C1 and D1 on noise hazard exceeded 90% among those of total hazardous factors. The rate of company exceeding noise exposure limit was also more than 90%. The analysis result shows that main ages diagnosed with C1 and D1 was age of 50s. The majority scale company having workers diagnosed with C1 and D1 was the companies employing 5~49 workers. Types of industries which have a large number of companies exceeding noise exposure limit were automobile and trailer manufacturing, metal processing industry and primary metal manufacturing. A large number of work processes exceeding noise exposure limit were forming and processing work, cutting and bending work and grinding. To reduce the number of company exceeding noise exposure limit, the reduction counterplan should be focused on the type of industry and the work process which exceeded noise exposure limit frequently. However, the reduction counterplan is preemptively necessary to the type of industry and the work process which exceeded noise exposure limit consecutively if the purpose of reduction counterplan is not to merely reduce the number of company exceeding noise exposure limit but to abate workers' suffering from noise.

  • Aluminum alloy is a material widely used in the aircraft industry. However, since it has relatively low hardness, strength and tribological properties, it is necessary to improve these properties. In this paper, a TiN thin film was coated on the surface of AL7075-T7351 using DC magnetron sputtering. The coating was performed by setting different deposition pressure, deposition time, and applied power. Then, the tribological properties of the thin film were investigated. As a result of the experiment, the hardness of the thin film was higher than that of the base material, and the specimen with the highest hardness had excellent friction coefficient, wear amount, and adhesive strength characteristics. Through this study, it was confirmed that the tribological characteristics of aluminum alloy can be improved by depositing thin films using DC magnetron sputtering.

  • Purpose: This study evaluates the challenges faced by foreign legacy automakers' joint ventures (FLAJVs) in China's new energy vehicle (NEV) market segment within the context of liability of foreignness (LOF). Research design, data and methodology: The research draws on various secondary sources, including reports from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, industry reports, external media sources, and the annual reports of VW Group (2019-2023), BYD, and Nio (2018-2023). Results: The remarkable speed of China's ascent to market leadership in the NEV segment is attributable to a dual-faceted NEV policy. This policy includes government grants and subsidies designed to bolster the technological capacity of domestic automakers and incentives to encourage consumers to purchase domestic NEVs. These measures have effectively shifted both supply and demand from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to NEVs. Consequently, the market positioning of FLAJVs has weakened due to intense competition from established domestic automakers and new entrants. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that FLAJVs are increasingly experiencing the effects of the liability of foreignness, leading to higher costs associated with purchasing regulatory credits and the implementation of costly strategic initiatives to comply with the Dual-Credit Policy (DCP).
