  • Background/Aims: In March 2022, the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) released the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/AAMI ST91:2021, their latest update on comprehensive, flexible, and semirigid endoscope reprocessing. These updated standards recommend the sterilization of high-risk endoscopes when possible and provide new recommendations for the precleaning, leak testing, manual cleaning, visual inspection, automated reprocessing, drying, storage, and transport of endoscopes. Methods: ANSI/AAMI ST91:2021 was compared with ANSI/AAMI ST91:2015 for major reprocessing differences that result in either time and/or cost increases. Time estimates were captured by explicit recommendation inclusion or taken from the literature. All the costs were estimated using publicly available resources. Results: The updated standards represent a potential 24.3-minute and 52.35 to 67.57 United States dollars increase per procedure in terms of reprocessing time and spending, respectively, not including capital investments. Capital costs per procedure were highly dependent on the procedure volume of the facility. Conclusions: The new AAMI standards recommend several major changes, such as sterilization, for facilities to reprocess and manage endoscopes between uses. As more facilities increase their reprocessing methods to reflect the updated standards, they do so at a cost and introduce several delays. As the reprocessing landscape evolves, facilities should consider their true costs and alternative solutions, such as single-use endoscopes.

  • Defects in dissimilar metal welds are reported to be on the increase during the operating lifespan and aging of nuclear power plants. In Korea, reported cases of defects due to dissimilar metal welds include the drain nozzle of a steam generator and RCS hot tube sampling nozzles. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a reliable automated nondestructive inspection technique and a system for the inspection of dissimilar metal welds of small diameter nozzles in a high radiation area of a nuclear power plant. In this study, to ensure effective defect inspection of small diameter nozzles (RCS high-temperature tube sampling nozzle) of a nuclear power plant, three different methods were developed. These include: (1) optimum inspection probe design by beam simulation, (2) multi-directions UT optimum inspection technique for the inspection of small diameters of different welded parts, and (3) remote control automatic inspection system. The developed technique and systems have been verified to be suitable for use in the inspection of defects in smaller diameter nozzles in nuclear power plants.

  • Recently the CGF/SAF (Computer Generated Force / Semi-Automated Force) technology has been getting attention to deal with the increasing complexity in a DM&S(Defence Modeling and Simulation) environment. OneSAF is one of well-known CGF/SAF systems, however, it is not able to support the DEVS framework which is an advanced discrete event based modeling and simulation environment. Especially, most DM&S systems in Korea has been developed on the basis of the DEVS framework. In this paper, we have proposed the agent-based SAF design methodology and tool for supporting DEVS M&S environment. The proposed SAF modeling tool is divided into two parts; the agent modeling part and SAF modeling part. In the agent modeling environment, the modeler can simply create the agent model by writing down the necessary rules. It also provides the agent testing environment so that the modeler maybe conveniently verify the prescribed agent model. The SAF model is finally created by combing the individual agents based on the pre-defined structure. DM&S engineers will be able to employ our tools and modeling methodology to design the DEVS-based DM&S system to be developed.

  • Database schema integration is a significant issue in information systems. Because schema integration is a time-consuming and labor-intensive task, many studies have attempted to automate it. Researchers typically use XML as the source schema and leave much of the work to be done through DBA intervention, e.g., there are various naming conflicts related to relationship names in schema integration. In the past, the DBA had to intervene to resolve the naming-conflict name. In this paper, we introduce an algorithm that automatically generates relationship names to resolve relationship name conflicts that occur during schema integration. This algorithm is based on an Internet collocation and English sentence example dictionary. The relationship between the two entities is generated by analyzing examples extracted based on dictionary data through natural language processing. By building a semi-automated schema integration system and testing this algorithm, we found that it showed about 90% accuracy. Using this algorithm, we can resolve the problems related to naming conflicts that occur at schema integration automatically without DBA intervention.

  • The study of the compatibility of EPUB DRM, granted by the Korea Copyright Commission, as a CT R & D project (Project Title: The Development of the standard reference software technology for International Standard EPUB-based eBook DRM) developed standards such as profile standards for encryption digital signature and authentication certificates and standards for technical terms of rights information. In 2012, these four standards have been established as the Korean Industrial Standards under the names of 'Encryption specification for EPUB DRM,' 'the Digital signature specification for EPUB DRM,' 'the Certificate specification for EPUB DRM,' and 'Definitions of Right Terms for EPUB DRM' through the ODPF(Open Digital Standardization Forum) and the TTA(Telecommunications Technology Association). The research project also proposed standards of ebook DRM license protocols in order for the four standards to practically apply to ebook DRM compatibility. It is necessary for technology standards to require a compatibility standard test process for testing whether implementations which were developed on the basis of the standard specification, comply with standards. This study suggests an automated compatible standard test method and a test model under the ebook DRM standard technical specification.

  • Hearing impairment is one of the most common birth defects among infants. Significant bilateral hearing impairment have profound effects on speech and language development. But it can be prevented, if a hearing impairment is identified and treated in its early stage. ABR (auditory brainstem response) is useful screening tool for new born hearing test. However, the interpretation of conventional ABR should be done by a experienced audiologist and testing takes some time. Therefore, A-ABR(automated ABR) which detect ABR peak automatically have been developed recently. In contrast to A-ABR researches became active in overseas, there has been little study in Korea. In this study, we have developed a portable A-ABR system based on the results of our previous study. For the evaluation of the developed system, the clinical trials were performed on adults and infants. As a results, it showed good sensitivity (94.4%) and specificity (92.2%), and accuracy (93.0%) between clinical diagnosis and the developed A-ABR test.

  • As one of empirical research and developments on BIM applications to improve design quality and productivity of building, efforts have been devoted to automated compliance checking of building design for building permit. KBimLogic is a mechanism that translate Korean Buidling Act to the computational language called KBimCode. KBimCode aims to standardized and neutral language that can be applied to various design rules. This paper focuses on testing expandability of KBimCode by appling it on Chinese Building Act. We analyzed Chinese national regulation on fire protection and evacuation, based on 1) Object·property, 2) function for predicate processing, 3) relationship of sentences. As a result, Chinese Building Act were successfully translated to KBimCode with some important implications for further application. Based on the finding of the paper, KBimCode is expected to be applicable to kinds of design rules.

  • The undrained behavior of Asan marine soil was investigated by using an automated triaxial testing device. The stress-strain behavior at the preand postfailure state of marine soil under undrained compression and eatension conditions was compared with the behavior of pure silt, pure clay and the overall behavior of Asan marine soil was predicted with the modified Camflay model and the bounding surface model. The marine soil sampled in Asan bay area was clayey silts with 70oA silt-30% clay content and the testing samples were prepared in both undisturbed and remolded conditions. All samples are normally consolidated with 400 kPa of effective mean confining pressure and each sample is unloaded to 200, 100, 67 kPa, respectively. And then the shear test was performed with different confining pressure. According to experimental results, there exists an unique failure line whose slope is lower than silt's and higher than clay's. It is identified that the undrained shear strength of normally consolidated samples increases after crossing the phase transformation line because of volume dilation tendency which is not seen in clay. Overconsolidated samples show different soil behavior compared with pure silt due to its tendency of change in volume. It is also found that the overall behavior of Asan marine soil cannot be predicted precisely with the modified Cam-clay model and the bounding surface model.

  • This study aimed to compare the automated most-probable-number (MPN) TEMPO BC and the quantitative mannitol-egg yolk-polymyxin (MYP) plate methods for enumeration of Bacillus cereus in food samples known to be frequently contaminated. Food products that were naturally or artificially contaminated with B. cereus were analyzed by both methods. A difference of less than 1 log (CFU/g) between the two methods was noted in 95.3% samples. There were no significant differences in artificially contaminated products between the two methods in terms of $R^2$ values for sauce products, jorim products, fish products, etc. However, a significant difference was noted for sunsik, fermented soybean products, and products. The linear equation of naturally versus artificially contaminated food was $log_{(TEMPO\;BC)}=0.8453{\times}log_{(MYP\;plate\;agar)}+0.1642$. Statistical analysis of the results showed good agreement between the two methods. Due to growing interest in food safety, the use of the TEMPO BC method may increase. In response to this trend, the results from this study will offer valuable comparative data on the feasibility of existing methods and help develop new approaches for food safety testing.

  • As the increase of the operation year of nuclear power plants, the probabilities of the degradation of the major facilities and materials in the nuclear power plants are increased. The integrity of those facilities shall be monitored and verified by the non-destructive examination methods with the regulation codes, so called inservice inspection(ISI). The ISI of Yonggwang unit 6 was performed in four different parts, 1) non-destructive examinations for the components, piping weldments and structures, 2) automated ultrasonic examinations for pressure vessels, 3) visual examinations for the interior structures of the reactor, 4) eddy current examinations for the steam generator tubes. As the results, there was no severe indication and all detected indications were evaluated as non-relavent. Especially for the examinations of the piping weldments, PD(Performance Demonstration) was applied as a W examination method defined in the 1995 edition of ASME Code Sec. XI. The implementation of the PD for the piping weld results in an improvement of the reliability of the UT examinations.
