  • Co-citation means that two or more studies are cited together by a later study. This paper deals with the relationship between co-citation and author disambiguation. Author disambiguation is to cluster same-name author instances into real-world individuals. Co-citation may influence author disambiguation in terms that two or more related research works performed by the same person may be co-cited by some later studies. This article describes automated steps to gather co-citation information from Google scholar, and proposes a new clustering algorithm to effectively integrate co-citation information with other author disambiguation features. Experiments showed that co-citation helps to improve the performance of author disambiguation.

  • Author co-citation analysis(ACA) technique has been widely used for identifying research areas and trends in a discipline. But this technique has some limitations, mainly due to citation delay, on analyzing current trends and identifying active researchers. In this study, a new method, named as Bibliographic Author Coupling Analysis (BACA), is suggested for overcoming those limitations of author co-citation analysis. BACA is based on Kessler's bibliographic coupling approach and focuses not on documents but on authors. Simply stated, BACA technique assumes that those likewise citing authors have the same research interests. For the purpose of comparing with author co-citation analysis, two preceding studies with author co-citation analysis are reconsidered and re-examined using BACA. The comparing results can be regarded as promising the usefulness of BACA in analyzing current research trends and identifying active researchers.

  • This study intended to make new suggestions by clarifying usefulness of analysis methodology for the intellectual structure of disciplines, which combines author co-citation analysis and author bibliographic coupling analysis. It also aimed to identify the recent research trend and key researchers recently doing research activities actively as well as the intellectual structure in the field of social welfare. It was found to be more efficient to conduct both author co-citation analysis and author bibliographic coupling analysis in order to identify traditional sub-areas of disciplinary subject or the research trend of actual researchers in examining the intellectual structure of a specific discipline.

  • This research presents author co-citation analysis of the subject area in the humanities - Korean history. Three approaches to multivariate analyses were used to display the inter-author relationships in the similarity matrix. Data on co-citation of sixty seven authors for the period of 19801989 were extracted from the database constructed by author. The author's name, here refers to a body of writings by a person, is the unit of analysis. The data were subjected to non-metric multidimensional scaling program create two-dimensional map of authors. Authors with similarity are clustered using hierarchical agglomerative procedure and it is found that five clusters in Korean history represent primarily research specializations. Author map of Korean history reveals the first dimension corresponding to subject orientation of authors and the second dimension corresponds to research method or research style. In factor analysis, each factor reflects research specialty made up of authors, and factor locadings demonstrate the breadth or concentration of sixty seven authors' scholarly contributions on Korean history. It is demonstrated that the· specific methodology employed by this research, author co-citation analysis, is useful to represent the intellectual structure of Korean history.

  • This study compared Author Profiling Analysis(APA) to Author Co-Citation Analysis (ACA). The former is a new analytic technique on the intellectual structure of a science whereas the latter is a traditional analytic technique. The purpose of this study was to propose appropriate methods to analyze intellectual structure of a science in the Korean research environment. In order to achieve the goal, this study adopted APA using Text Mining for analysis on the intellectual structure of a science rather than relying on citation index in order to determine a potential utility of the new analytic technique that can identify the intellectual structure.

  • Purpose This study intended to introduce new approaches to identify the intellectual structure of supply chain management(SCM) researches, which combines author co-citation analysis(ACA) and social network analysis(SNA). Design/methodology/approach We searched RISS(www.riss.kr) and NDSL(www.ndsl.or.kr) database and collected 292 academic papers on supply chain management between 2001 and 2011. Among 9,637 references of these papers, we analyzed 1,848 references that were published by domestic authors. We produced a correlation matrix of 32 author co-citation matrix and conducted multi-variate statistical analysis such as factor analysis. We also performed social network analysis to identify the main researchers in SCM. Findings We found four main sub-areas of supply chain management research: SCM adoption factors, logistics, SCM performance, and SCM structure. We could present the authors who played important roles within the network by using SNA indicators. The finding of this research also suggests more collaborations among domestic researchers are required to overcome the low co-citation rates among domestic authors.

  • Exploring research similarity of researchers offers insight on research communities and potential interactions among scholars. While co-authorship is a popular measure for studying research similarity of researchers, it cannot provide insight on authors who have not collaborated yet. In this work, we present novel approach to capture research similarity of authors using citation information. Extensive study is conducted on DATA & KNOWLEDGE ENGINEERING (DKE) publications to demonstrate and compare suggested approach with co-authorship based approach. Analysis result shows that proposed approach distinguishes author relationships that is not shown in co-authorship network.

  • As the improvement of digital technologies increases the use of images from various fields, the domain of image retrieval has evolved and become a growing topic of research in the Library and Information Science field. The purpose of this study is to identify the knowledge structure of the image retrieval domain by using the author co-citation analysis and author bibliographic coupling as analytical tools in order to understand the domain's past and present. The data set for this study is 245 articles with 8,031 cited articles in the field of image retrieval from 1998 to 2013, from the Web of Science citation database. According to the results of author co-citation analysis for the past of the image retrieval domain, our findings demonstrate that the intellectual structure of image retrieval in the LIS field consists of predominantly user-oriented approaches, but also includes some areas influenced by the CBIR area. More specifically, the user-oriented approach contains six specific areas which include image needs, information seeking, image needs and search behavior, image indexing and access, indexing of image collection, and web image search. On the other hand, for CBIR approaches, it contains feature-based image indexing, shape-based indexing, and IR & CBIR. The recent trends of image retrieval based on the results from author bibliographic coupling analysis show that the domain is expanding to emerging areas of medical images, multimedia, ontology- and tag-based indexing which thus reflects a new paradigm of information environment.
