This paper is concerned with defects detection and evaluation of heat affected zone (HAZ) in austenitic stainless steel type 304 by ultrasonic wave and neural network. In experiment, the reflected ultrasonic defect signals from artificial defects (side hole, vertical hole, notch) of HAZ appears as beam distance of prove-defect, distance of probe-surface, depth of defect-surface on CRT. For defect classification simulation, neural network system was organized using total results of ultrasonic experiment. The organized neural network system was learned with the accuracy of 99%. Also it could be classified with the accuracy of 80% in side hole, and 100% in vertical hole, 90% in notch about ultrasonic pattern recognition. Simulation results of neural network agree fairly well with results of ultrasonic experiment. Thus were think that the constructed system (ultrasonic wave - neural network) in this work is useful for defects dection and classification such as holes and notches in HAZ of austenitic stainless steel 304.

The importance of soundness and safety evaluation in weld zone using by the ultrasonic wave has been recently increased rapidly because of the collapses of huge structures and safety accidents. Especially, the ultrasonic method that has been often used for a major non-destructive testing(NDT) technique in many engineering fields plays an important role as a volume test method. Hence, the defecting any defects of weld Bone in austenitic stainless steel type 304 using by ultrasonic wave and neural network is explored in this paper. In order to detect defects, a distance amplitude curve on standard scan sensitivity and preliminary scan sensitivity represented of the relation between ultrasonic probe, instrument, and materials was drawn based on a quantitative standard. Also, a total of 93% of defect types by testing 30 defect patterns after organizing neural network system, which is learned with an accuracy of 99%, based on ultrasonic evaluation is distinguished in order to classify defects such as holes or notches in experimental results. Thus, the proposed ultrasonic wave and neural network is useful for defect detection and Ultrasonic Non-Destructive Evaluation(UNDE) of weld zone in austenitic stainless steel 304.
The 2-step low temperature plasma processes (the combined carburizing and post-nitriding) were carried out for improving both the surface hardness and corrosion resistance of AISI 316L stainless steel. The effects of processing time and temperature on the surface properties during nitriding step were investigated. The expanded austenite (${\gamma}_N$) was formed on all of the treated surface. The thickness of ${\gamma}_N$ was increased up to about $20{\mu}m$ and the thickness of entire hardened layer was determined to be about $40{\mu}m$. The surface hardness reached up to $1,200HV_{0.1}$ which is about 5 times higher than that of untreated sample ($250HV_{0.1}$). The thickness of ${\gamma}_N$ and concentration of N on the surface were increased with increasing processing time and temperature. The corrosion resistance in 2-step low temperature plasma processed austenitic stainless steels was enhanced more than that in the untreated austenitic stainless steels due to a high concentration of N on the surface.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of reverse transformation on the mechanical properties in high manganese austenitic stainless steel. Over 95% of the austenite was transformed to deformation-induced martensite by 70% cold rolling. Reverse transformation became rapid above an annealing temperature of $550^{\circ}C$, but there was no significant transformation above $700^{\circ}C$. In addition, with an increasing annealing time at $700^{\circ}C$, reverse transformation was induced rapidly, but the transformation was almost completed at 10 min. There was a rapid decrese in strength and hardness with annealing at temperature above $550^{\circ}C$, while elongation increased rapidly above $600^{\circ}C$. At $700^{\circ}C$, hardness and strength decreased rapidly, and elongation increased steeply with an increasing reverse treatment time up to 10 min, whereas there were no significant change with a treatment time after 10 min. The reverse-transformed austenite showed an ultra-fine grain size less than $0.2{\mu}m$, which made it possible to strengthen the high manganese austenitic stainless steel.

Using first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT), a semi-analytical solution is employed to analyze creep damage and remaining life assessment of 304L austenitic stainless steel thick (304L ASS) cylindrical pressure vessels with variable thickness subjected to the temperature gradient and internal non-uniform pressure. Damages are obtained in thick cylinder using Robinson's linear life fraction damage rule, and time to rupture and remaining life assessment is determined by Larson-Miller Parameter (LMP). The thermo-elastic creep response of the material is described by Norton's law. The novelty of the present work is that it seeks to investigate creep damage and life assessment of the vessels with variable thickness made of 304L ASS using LMP based on first-order shear deformation theory. A numerical solution using finite element method (FEM) is also presented and good agreement is found. It is shown that temperature gradient and non-uniform pressure have significant influences on the creep damages and remaining life of the vessel.
Cold-expanded austenitic high nitrogen steel (HNS) was subjected to investigate the effects of grain size on the stress-controlled high cycle fatigue (HCF) as well as the strain-controlled low cycle fatigue (LCF) properties. The austenitic HNSs with two different grain sizes (160 and $292{\mu}m$) were fabricated by the different hot forging strain. The fine-grained (FG) specimen exhibited longer LCF life and higher HCF limit than those of the coarse-grained (CG) specimen. Fatigue crack growth testing showed that crack propagation rate in the FG specimen was the same as that in the CG specimen, implying that crack propagation rate did not affect the discrepancy of LCF life and HCF limit between two cold-expanded HNSs. Therefore, it was estimated that superior LCF and HCF properties in the FG specimen resulted from the retardation of the fatigue crack initiation as compared with the CG specimen. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the effective grain size including twin boundaries are much finer in the FG specimen than that in the CG specimen, which can give favorable contributions to strengthening.

This paper proposes a residual stress mitigation of a nuclear safety-related austenitic stainless steel TP304 pipe bended by local induction heating process via performing elastic-plastic finite element analysis. Residual stress distributions of the pipe bend were calculated by performing finite element analysis. Validity of the finite element analysis procedure was verified via comparing with temperature histories measured by using thermocouples, ultrasonic thickness measurement results, and residual stress measurement results by a hole-drilling method. Parametric finite element stress analysis was performed to investigate effects of the process and geometric shape variables on the residual stresses on inner surfaces of the pipe by applying the verified procedure. As a result of the parametric analysis, it was found that it is difficult to considerably reduce the inner surface residual stresses by changing the existing process and geometric shape variables. So, in order to mitigate the residual stresses, effect of an additional process such as cooling after the bending on the residual stresses was investigated. Finally, it was identified that the additional heating after the bending can significantly reduce the residual stresses while other variables have insignificant effect.
Many studies on the application of stainless steels as structural materials in buildings and infra-structures have been performed thanks to superior characteristics of corrosion resistance, fire resistance and aesthetic appeal. Experimental investigation to estimate the ultimate strength and fracture mode of the fillet-welded connections of cold-formed austenitic stainless steel (STS304L) with better intergranular corrosion resistance than that of austenitic stainless steel, STS304 commonly used has carried out by authors. Specimens were fabricated to fail by base metal fracture not weld metal fracture with main variables of weld lengths according to loading direction. All specimens showed a block shear fracture mode. In this paper, finite element analysis model was developed to predict the ultimate behaviors of welded connection and its validity was verified through the comparison with test results. Since the block shear behavior of welded connection due to stress triaxiality and shear-lag effects is different from that of bolted connection, stress and strain distributions in the critical path of tensile and shear fracture section were investigated. Test and analysis strengths were compared with those by current design specifications such as AISC, EC3 and existing researcher's proposed equations. In addition, through parametric analysis with extended variables, the conditions of end distance and longitudinal weld length for block shear fracture and tensile fracture were suggested.
This work is concerned with a statistical analysis of factors affecting the irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC) of austenitic stainless steels for core internals of pressurized water reactors (PWR). The microstructural and environmental factors were reviewed and critically evaluated by the statistical analysis. The Cr depletion at grain boundary was determined to have no significant correlation with the IASCC susceptibility. The threshold irradiation fluence of IASCC in a PWR was statistically calculated to decrease from 5.799 to 1.914 DPA with increase of temperature from 320 to $340^{\circ}C$. From the analysis of the relationship between applied stress and time-to-failure of stainless steel components based on an accelerated life testing model, it was found that B2 life of a baffle former bolt exposed to neutron fluence of 20 and 75 DPA was at least 2.5 and 0.4 year, respectively, within 95% confidence interval.
