  • Retained austenite in matrix of austempered ductile iron has been well-known as a parameter in controlling mechanical properties, but investigation to obtain quantitative relationship with mechanical properties lack. Therefore, this study executed austempering treatment at various temperatures on ductile iron alloyed with Mo, Ni, Cu. In consequence, microstructure of retained austenite transformed coarse, and quantity increased according as austempering temperature increased. After heat-treatment, microstructure of specimen alloyed with Ni was fine, and toughness improved. At austempering temperature up to $400^{\circ}C$, carbide precipitation started in retained austenite. In consequence, afforded cause of hardness increase, a lot of increase did not arise for coarse structure.

  • Gray cast iron with a high damping capacity has been used for controlling the vibration and noise in various mechanical structures. Nevertheless, its usage has been often restricted due to its poor tensile strength. Therefore, it is necessary to improve tensile strength at the expense of a loss in damping capacity. This study is aimed at finding the best combination of tensile strength and damping capacity by varying austempering time and temperature range from $320^{\circ}C$ to $380^{\circ}C$ after austenization at $900^{\circ}C$ for 1hr. The effect of austempering condition on hardness and the volume fraction of retained austenite is investigated as well. The results obtained are summarized as follows : (1) With an increase in austempering temperature, both tensile strength and hardness decrease while damping capacity improves. (2) Austempering at $350^{\circ}C$, resulting in a mixture of upper and lower bainite with partially retained austenite, exhibits the optimum combination of tensile strength and damping capacity.

  • This study was investigated to know the effect of Cu addition on austempered ductile cast iron at various temperatures and times. Test results showed that the volume fraction of retained austenite and the carbon contents of retained austenite showed the greatest value at $400^{\circ}C$. Also, in case of specimens having more Cu contents, the volume fraction of retained austenite and the carbon contents of retained austenite showed the lower value. After austempering treatment, tensile strength and Impact value increased, but elongation decreased. With increasing austempering treatment temperature, tensile strength, elongation, and impact value decreased. In case of specimen having more Cu contents, tensile strength showed the higher value, but elongation showed the lower value. Damping capacity was decreased by austempering treatment and was not affected on austempering temperature and time. In case of specimen having more Cu contents, damping capacity showed the higher value.

  • In this study, we investigate the effects of austempering heat treatment on the processing window and mechanical properties in cast and hot-rolled Fe-0.7 C-2.3 Si-0.3 Mn steel. Each specimens were austenitised at $900^{\circ}C$ for 7 min, and austempered at $260^{\circ}C,\;320^{\circ}C$, and $380^{\circ}C$ for the various periods of time from 2 min to 240 min. After heat treatment, the evaluation of stage I and stage II as performed by optical metallography, XRD, hardness test. Both cast and hot rolled specimens had similar processing window. So grain size effect is not important to the austempered high carbon high silicon cast steel. When the austempering temperature was $260^{\circ}C$, the microstructure consisted of the lower ausferrite while the upper ausferrite structure was formed at $380^{\circ}C$. As the austempering temperature increases from 260 to $380^{\circ}C$, the strength and hardness decreased, elongaton and volume fraction of austenite increased. In addition, there was no change of mechanical properties between cast and hot-rolled specimens.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of carbon on mechanical properties with different austempering conditions of high carbon(0.7~1.3wt.%C)-2.0wt.%Si steels. The specimens were austenitized at 850, 925 and $1020^{\circ}C$, and austempered at 260, 320 and $380^{\circ}C$ for the various period of time from 3 min to 300 min. After heat treatment, the evolution of stage I and stage II was identified with optical microscope, XRD and hardness test. When the austempering temperature was $260^{\circ}C$, the microstructure consisted of the lower ausferrite while the upper ausferrite micro-structure was formed at $380^{\circ}C$. As the austempering temperature increases from 260 to $380^{\circ}C$, the tensile strength decreases and elongation increases. In addition, when carbon content increases, tensile strength and elongation decrease.

  • The effects of Nickle (Ni) addition on bainitic transformation and property of ultrahigh strength bainitic steels are investigated by three austempering processes. The results indicate that Ni addition hinders the isothermal bainite transformation kinetics, and decreases the volume fraction of bainite due to the decrease of chemical driving force for nucleation and growth of bainite transformation. Moreover, the product of tensile strength and total elongation (PSE) of high carbon bainitic steels decreases with Ni addition at higher austempering temperatures (220 and $250^{\circ}C$), while it shows no significant difference at lower austempering temperature ($200^{\circ}C$). For the same steel (Ni-free or Ni-added steel), the amounts of bainite and RA firstly increase and then decrease with the increase of the austempering temperature, resulting in the highest PSE in the sample austempered at temperature of $220^{\circ}C$. In addition, the effects of austempering time on bainite amount and property of high carbon bainitic steels are also analyzed. It indicates that in a given transformation time range of 30 h, more volume of bainite and better mechanical property in high carbon bainitic steels can be obtained by increasing the isothermal transformation time.

  • In this study, we investigated effect of austempering factors and Mn addition on mechanical properties of ADI with ferrite-bainite matrix by pearlite-bainite transformation treatment. Ductile cast iron specimens containing various of Mn were austenitized at 875$^{\circ}C$ for 350 sec or 925$^{\circ}C$ for 160 sec and then austempered at 300$^{\circ}C$ or 400$^{\circ}C$ for the various periods(5 to 30 min). Manganese increased pearlite volume fraction in as cast ductile cast iron. The obtained results are as follows ; 1) In austenitizing, hardness of sepecimens austenitized at 875$^{\circ}C$ for 350 sec was higher than that of 925$^{\circ}C$ for 160 sec. 2) In effect of austempering temperature, tensile strength and handness of specimens austempered at 300$^{\circ}C$ was higher than that of 400$^{\circ}C$. However, elongation had reverse tendency. 3) Increasing austempering time decreased hardness due to the increment of bainite and retained austenite fractions. However, toughness are increased.

  • Various test specimens were prepared by austempering low alloyed Mo-Ni-Cu ductile iron blocks of high graphite nodule count at 270, 320 or $370^{\circ}C$ for 0.5, 1, 3 or 9hrs. Tensile test, CVN impact test and plane-strain fracture toughness test(compact tension specimen of 50mm W) were done for each heat treatment condition at room temperature. X-ray diffractometer and optical microscope were used to investigate the change of microstructure and relationships between microstructure and test results. The highest retained austenite volume percent at each austempering temperature was corresponded to the highest mechanical property. The highest elongation value of 17%, U.T.S. value of 1,600 MPa or $K_{IC}$ value of 90MPa${\surd}$m were reached at each optimum condition. The best heat treatment condition for fracture toughness were 3hrs' holding time combined with the austempering temperature of 270 and $320^{\circ}C$, and 1hr's of $370^{\circ}C$.

  • Grey cast iron containing a small amount of Cu and Mo to improve the effect of heat treatment and microstructure were cast and them austenitized. After austenitizing the specimens of castings were austempered at 250$^{\circ}C$, 300$^{\circ}C$ and 350$^{\circ}C$. The effects of matrix structures on mechanical properties and fracture characteristics at the different austempering temperature were investigated. Tensile strength, hardness and impact toughness of austempered grey cast iron showed maximum valve 359 MPa, 321 HB, 3.9 CVN respectively at the lowest austempering temperature, 250$^{\circ}C$. $K_{IC}$ of gref cast iron at a austempering temperature, 250$^{\circ}C$, showed maximum 44 MPa.$m^{1/2}$ even though the amount of retained austenite in it is only 16%. This mainly comes from the refinement of the retained austenite. Quasi-cleavage pattern with a little fit of fibrous pattern was shown on the fractured surface of austempered grey cast iron at all of the temperatures tested.

  • C/V graphite iron has superior tensile strength, toughness and ductility than grey iron, and better castability than ductile iron. The retained austenite content of C/V graphite iron by austempering treatment affects on the mechanical properties such as ductility, hardness, wear properties and machinability. C/V graphite iron alloyed with Cu and Mo were carried out on the austenitizing at $900^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour, and the austempering at $240{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. And then the mechanical and wear properties of austempered C/V graphite iron have been investigated by the retained austenite content. In consequence, the retained austenite content was found to be 18.2% in austempering temperature at $240^{\circ}C$, and was increased 39.2% at $400^{\circ}C$. Tensile strength and hardness of austempered C/V graphite iron were decreased as the retained austenite content increased, but elongation was increased. The rolling wear loss were increased as the retained austenite content increased. The wear surface of as-cast became to be rough. The microstructure of austempered C/V graphite iron was became to be acicular ausferrite in austempering at $240^{\circ}C$, and feathery ausferrite at $400^{\circ}C$.
