  • Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) castings having various chemical composition and heat treatment conditions were investigated. Especially, this study was investigated the influence of various parameters on austempering temperature and alloying elements. The addition of Mo, Cu, and Ni individually or combined in these alloys also investigated. The alloying elements influence the austempering reaction, the microstructures, mechanical properties and amount of retained austenite. In this study, the mechanical properties (ultimate tensile strength(UTS), hardness, elongation) are analysed to show the relationship between alloying elements, austempering temperatures and amount of retained austenite. The amount of retained austenite was the range of 15 - 40%. In case of the alloy to witch Mo, Cu, and Ni was added, the amount of retained austenite was the largest at a constant austempering temperature.

  • Volume fraction and morphology of retained austenite, tensile properties of TRIP type high strength steel sheet with Fe-C-Si-Mn-Cu chemical composition have been investigated. The retained austenite of granular, bar and film type existing in specimen was obtained after intercritical annealing and austempering. The granular type retained austenite increased with increase of intercritical annealing and austempering temperature. With increase of intercritical annealing temperature, retained austenite and carbon contents increased. Maximum contents of retained austenite was obtained by austempering at $400^{\circ}C$. The maximum tensile strength was obtained by austempering at $450^{\circ}C$ and maximum elongation was obtained at $400^{\circ}C$. T.S${\times}$E.L value increased with increase of retained austenite contents due to the elongation strongly controlled by contents of retained austenite, but tensile strength was affected with various factors such as bainitic structure etc.

  • The effects of alloying elements(Mo, Cu, Ni) and austempering temperature conditions on the microstructural morphologies and mechanical properties in austempered ductile cast iron has been investigated. The austempering at $350^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs after austenitizing at $900^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs in all specimens with various alloying elements was optimum because the good combination of tensile and yield strength, hardness and impact value was obtained. The microstructures of these ADIs treated by a forementioned austempering condition are nearly a mixture type of needle and feathery bainite. Among those alloys, Mo-Cu alloyed DCI had the best optimum mechanical properties of hardness and toughness for automobile parts by austempering treatment for 2hrs at $900^{\circ}C$ followed by $350^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs.

  • Rotary bending fatigue tests were carried out to investigate the improvement of fatigue limit in annealed and austempered spheroidal graphite cast iron. Main results obtained are as follows. (1) The tensile strength(hardness) of Series C is higher than that of Series B, and fatigue limits are 245MPa in Series C, 230MPa in Series B and 195MPa in Series A, respectively. (2) The fatigue limits of Series B and Series A are mainly governed by the resistance to fatigue crack initiation. Whereas, the fatigue limit of Series C is governed by the resistance to fatigue crack initiation and growth. The defect size and the resistance to crack initiation and growth should be considered to clarify the fatigue properties in spheroidal graphite cast iron. (3) Improvement of fatigue limit by half-austempering is more reasonable than that of full-austempering treatment in multi defective materials as spheroidal graphite cast iron.

  • This study was carried out in the austempering temperature and time after Ni, Mo addition in purpose of modification of impact toughness of austempered ductile irons. Addition of alloy element and austempering treatment of $900^{\circ}C$ 60 minutes followed by $300^{\circ}C$, $350^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes, in this case impact value was increased by ideal mixed structure. But impact value was decreased when holing time is 120minutes, this is attributed to segregation and carbide precipitation from high carbon austenite. Highest impact value was obtained by $350^{\circ}C$ (Mo-addition) and $400^{\circ}C$ (Ni-addition). This phenomena was caused by presence of remained austenite. At all austempering temperature,, Ni-added specimen showed higher impact values than that of Mo-added specimen. And hardness property was affected by austempering temperature and holding time rather than amounts of alloying element.

  • Fatigue tests were performed to examine the 4 parameter method for specimens prepared by various heat treatment which resulted in different mechanical properties. Obtained main results are as follows. (1) Samples treated by austempering did not show the expected improvement of fatigue limit although hardness and strength increased. This is attributed to the fact that defect sensitivities of materials increase as increasing of hardness and tensile strength, it is also shown that the graphites acting as stress concentration place become larger by austempering heat treatment than by normal annealing. (2) It is very reasonable to predict the fatigue limit of ductile irons with 4 parameter method based on ${\sigma}_{TS}$, $H_v$, ${\Delta}K_{th}$ and ${\sqrt{area}}_{max}$. (3) The half-austempering treatment appeared to be more useful than the full-austempering method to improve the fatigue limit in the spheroidal graphite cast iron with multi defective material.

  • The effects of Nickle (Ni) addition on bainitic transformation and property of ultrahigh strength bainitic steels are investigated by three austempering processes. The results indicate that Ni addition hinders the isothermal bainite transformation kinetics, and decreases the volume fraction of bainite due to the decrease of chemical driving force for nucleation and growth of bainite transformation. Moreover, the product of tensile strength and total elongation (PSE) of high carbon bainitic steels decreases with Ni addition at higher austempering temperatures (220 and $250^{\circ}C$), while it shows no significant difference at lower austempering temperature ($200^{\circ}C$). For the same steel (Ni-free or Ni-added steel), the amounts of bainite and RA firstly increase and then decrease with the increase of the austempering temperature, resulting in the highest PSE in the sample austempered at temperature of $220^{\circ}C$. In addition, the effects of austempering time on bainite amount and property of high carbon bainitic steels are also analyzed. It indicates that in a given transformation time range of 30 h, more volume of bainite and better mechanical property in high carbon bainitic steels can be obtained by increasing the isothermal transformation time.

  • Various test specimens were prepared by austempering low alloyed Mo-Ni-Cu ductile iron blocks of high graphite nodule count at 270, 320 or $370^{\circ}C$ for 0.5, 1, 3 or 9hrs. Tensile test, CVN impact test and plane-strain fracture toughness test(compact tension specimen of 50mm W) were done for each heat treatment condition at room temperature. X-ray diffractometer and optical microscope were used to investigate the change of microstructure and relationships between microstructure and test results. The highest retained austenite volume percent at each austempering temperature was corresponded to the highest mechanical property. The highest elongation value of 17%, U.T.S. value of 1,600 MPa or $K_{IC}$ value of 90MPa${\surd}$m were reached at each optimum condition. The best heat treatment condition for fracture toughness were 3hrs' holding time combined with the austempering temperature of 270 and $320^{\circ}C$, and 1hr's of $370^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, we investigated effect of austempering factors and Mn addition on mechanical properties of ADI with ferrite-bainite matrix by pearlite-bainite transformation treatment. Ductile cast iron specimens containing various of Mn were austenitized at 875$^{\circ}C$ for 350 sec or 925$^{\circ}C$ for 160 sec and then austempered at 300$^{\circ}C$ or 400$^{\circ}C$ for the various periods(5 to 30 min). Manganese increased pearlite volume fraction in as cast ductile cast iron. The obtained results are as follows ; 1) In austenitizing, hardness of sepecimens austenitized at 875$^{\circ}C$ for 350 sec was higher than that of 925$^{\circ}C$ for 160 sec. 2) In effect of austempering temperature, tensile strength and handness of specimens austempered at 300$^{\circ}C$ was higher than that of 400$^{\circ}C$. However, elongation had reverse tendency. 3) Increasing austempering time decreased hardness due to the increment of bainite and retained austenite fractions. However, toughness are increased.

  • The effect of Ni addition, on the mechanical properties and fracture characteristics of Mo-Cu and Mo-Ni-Cu alloyed ductile iron austenitized at $900^{\circ}C$ and austempering temperatures of $250^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$ and $350^{\circ}C$. The tensile strength, yield strength and hardness are decreased and elongation and impact value are increased in both Mo-Cu and Mo-Ni-Cu alloyed austempered ductile iron, with increased austempering temperature. According to the austempering temperature are increased, the amount of retained austenite are increased. Maximum value of fracture toughness is obtained at $350^{\circ}C$ austempering temperature at this condition, the amount of retained austenite came to 40% in Mo-Ni-Cu alloyed ADI and 34% in Mo-Cu alloyed ADI. The fracture surface of ADI which had represented high toughness are showed a quasi-cleavage pattern and a dimple pattern with micro void. Comparing the fracture characteristics of Mo-Cu alloyed ADI with that of Mo-Ni-Cu alloyed ADI, the latter was superior to the former.
